Catfish Punch Bait (Best Catfish Bait For Eater Catfish)

Punch bait is a type of catfish bait that gets its name from the process used to bait the hook. The term punch bait doesn’t come from the brand or manufacturer but rather the type of product. Punch bait is typically made from a cheese base with a fibrous material added to them that thickens them. The addition of this fibrous material allows the bait to stick to a plain treble hook and eliminates the need to use spring hooks, dip worms or tubes, or any other form of “catfishing lure” that is often needed to keep other products on the hooks. This is much of what has made punch baits so popular for catfishing.
Punch bait is hands down one of the best catfish baits for catching "eater" size catfish, especially channel catfish. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and flat-out catches fish.

I made my own for decades, and you are correct, it is a process. So i started buying it about 7 y years ago. Initially i really like cj's, but in my opinion it has become very inconsistent with quality. My last bucket was nothing more than blobs of fiber, very little cheese. I should have sent it back, but doctored it up and used it. Sureshot is a very good bait also, especially in current due to the chicken fat in it. However, keep a pair of sidecutters handy, you will need to clip off the chicken fat from your hook often. I'm looking to try another brand, if i can't find the quality I'm looking for, i just may have to start making it again. I make it 5 gallons at a time. From someone who has used cheesebait for over 40 years now, you are absolutely correct. There ain't no better bait for them tasty channels, my favorite!!

I use a lot of sure shot punch bait from Benny Roberts in Decatur, TX!!! Awesome bait and very affordable!! Chad said something about his bait some years back and I just drive there and pick it up out of the milking house!!

At Fork, there are times, only small channels are caught with punch bait. I switched to raw unflavored chicken and caught bigger channels where only small ones were caught.

Hands down for us is the Wicked Sticky punch baits. We buy 4 gallons at a time. The regular sticky bait and the sewer baits both work great.

You can add vegetable oil to it a little at a time until you get it to the consistency you want.

I use the same bait you use, but when I pull the hook out, most of it stays in the bucket.....no matter what the temp is, and no matter what the consistency. But, if I'm trying to get it OFF the hook, when I'm done, it won't come off....lol. It is absolutely deadly for channels though, and you'll never miss a bite with your secret catfish rig.
