Catfish Rigs That Don’t Make Sense!

The thing about a 3 way rig that is my pet peeve is using leader material for the weight. Use lighter line for the weight. Say 20lb main 50lb hook and 12lb weight. That way it breaks first

That's the way I learned to tie a 3-way rig. The weight should be on line twice as long as the hook's line and 1/2 the strength of the main line. Since I mostly use 40 pound braid on my reels, I use 15 or 20 pound mono for the sinker, 50 to 70 mono for the hook. And don't get hung up on the term "leader". I have mono labeled as 4 pound test leader (used for fly fishing tippets).

Got to remember that current bank fishing and current in a boat are different. The angle of the line going to the rig, angle of the line with reference to the current is all different. Dragging bait with a Santee Cooper from a boat is not the same as anchor or bank fishing with the same rig. It is all what the person wants to use and feels comfortable using. Having confidence in the rig and way of fishing the key.

Spot on about the Santee rig. I set the float a "float length" from the hook, just to be sure it doesn't interfere with the hook set. And I've seen people place the float right next to the sinker or sinker slide. We I can, I try to explain the purpose of the float is to get the bait up off the bottom.

The 3 way swivel that is basically 2 barrel swivels helps keep line wrap away better than the 1 you showed.

Great stuff buddy! We use a 3 way in the spring but we clip the disk directly to the bottom eye of the 3-way swivel and then put a peg float on the leader to hook. Helps keep your hook and weight from getting tangled when you cast. I’m not in current though 🍀🍀🍀

I like to use the 3-way crane swivels. Way less issues than with the 3-way you showed chunky!

Oh chunky...3 way rig is a rig for current buddy. The bait is up off the bottom waiving in current. Not sitting on the bottom

Santee cooper rig. 24" or 36" Cigar float should be between 3 to 8 inches from the hook, its meant to hold the bait right in the fishes face.. we used Wine Corks back in the day on our striper rigs to get the bait off the bottom. on a three way you have to tie the leader a certain way. you double the line to the size of leader. grab the middle of line. fold it and roll it. what this does is makes the line roll on itself and form a more solid type of line. when you get to end you then tie it on swivel and that doubled up line will be a lot stronger and not so limp. if done right it should be sticking straight out from the swivel. then slide it through eye of hook put hook point in the little open area at end and tighten. you dont really tie on the hook. you can also take off and change hooks this way without retie. you kind of do the same on ocean dropper loop style. though you dont have to you can leave it limp. its better to help it to stick straight out and away from the main line and weight line.

3 ways are spossed to be use for current an the hook line is spossed to be shorter I use 24 inch to the weight an 12 to 10 inch to the hook an works realy good for live bait with the bobber above on the main line right above the 3 way weight holds the live bait down an the bobber hold the live bait off the bottom use this alot on the banks for flat heads
