This guitar solo, with the reverb and full treble screeching, goes right to your spine!

A classic blues track, elevated to the max by Led Zepp. Plant and Page singing and playing together is the highlight but Jones and Bonham were doing their thing as well.

A high school friend who had moved here from England brought this album with him before it was released in the US. He called this song "humping music". Indeed!

That’s kind of hard to believe, it was released in the US on January 12,1969, & in March everywhere else including England.

This song was originally written by Willie Dixon and performed by Muddy Waters with Earl Hooker on instrumental backing. Plant uses those lyrics with a bit of Robert Johnson's lyrics thrown in (the "I have a bird that whistles and I have birds that sing"). Since this was on their debut, I got the impression that everyone was given a chance to shine with mini organ, harmonica, guitar, and drum solos. The call and response between Plant and Page is masterfully done, assisted with a bit of backward echo on it, added by Jimmy. Everything on this introductory album told you that Led Zeppelin was going to be a force to be reckoned with.

Yeah, that first album was something else. Hard rock, folk rock, blues rock, English folk, proto-punk. Recorded just a month after the band formed, and in just 36 hours, we had never heard anything like it before. Ah-mazing, and album 2, which was recorded in between concert tours and remains their second highest selling album to this day, was dropped just 9 months later. Imagine all that from such young artists. When album 1 was recorded, Page was the oldest at age 24, Jones was 22, Bonham and Plant just 20 years old. Such gifted musicians who were clearly on the same wave-length.

Thought they formed in early August of 1968 and recorded in October. So, three months? What blows me away even more is that they actually did a mini tour in between to honor contract obligations that Jimmy had from The Yardbirds. Remarkable that they jelled so quickly into a great performing and recording band. Kismet

@@helenespaulding7562 Hey there! I recall reading that the four met up together to see how they'd get on playing together sometime around early- to mid-August, shortly before Plant's 20th birthday (August 20). They decided to form as a band, went on that mini-tour September 7th, then started recording album 1 immediately after returning to England later that month, finishing in October.

@@jmar7631 hmmm. Plausible. I know that when Robert came down to Panghorn to visit with Jimmy to see if they had chemistry it was in July of ‘68. So it makes sense that it would have taken a bit of time to convince a reluctant Bonham to join them So yeah, mid-August sounds right. Since they recorded in 36 hours of studio time I’m still thinking October. Can we split the difference and say two months? Hell, that’s still some kind of record I would think. 😁

@@helenespaulding7562 I just researched the question to refresh my memory. From studio “vault” records, their first rehearsal "in studio" was on August 17 (although they got together the previous week on a more informal basis), went on tour September 7-17, returned and started recording album 1 on September 25. Edit: Added clarification.

A Willie Dixon song from an album that I wasn't into retro as a teenager, which I really love today in appropriate moments, letting yourself go in the blues and its variations, especially Plant's harmoinca is the icing on the cake. Live versions are also a pleasure!!!. LZ II and IV are for every mood, including driving. Thanks, keep up going

This song is pretty high up on my list of favorites, I actually think it’s the best song for first time listeners. With the solos & vocal range, & of course Bonham on drums.

They definitely put the soulfulness & passion into the blues, they have the perfect combination of geniuses for soulful blues. It can be claimed other rock bands were blues too, but there’s really NO comparison.
