This is a slideshow (with some video) of the vertical tour at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. The photos were taken before the Paul Winter Concert, in some photos you can see "Phoenix" hanging from the nave ceiling.
The tour starts on the nave floor (North or South depending on your group) and then proceeds up VERY narrow spiral staircases that are hidden from view (Wooden doors in the nave aisles).
The different stops of the tour:
1st - Triforium
2nd - Buttress of the cathedral, exterior
3rd - Clerestory Walkway over the nave aisle
4th - Top most accessible part of the cathedral (at the level of the vaulted ceiling)
5th - Overcroft and above the nave vaulting (Attic)
6th - Roof and view of Manhattan
Vertical tours are offered at the cathedral on Wednesdays and Saturdays and are $15-20/person.
The audio is of Bruce Neswick playing "Fanfare to the Tongues of Fire" on the Great Organ of St. John the Divine. (Pro Organo CD 7251). Copyright 2011 Pro Organo
