The best one was the African guy because you could see he was almost cracking up, holding it in. 5 more seconds and he would've been done. Cut, start again. Apparently though it was the Chinese lady who was the biggest problem, she couldn't stop laughing and they had to do multiple takes.

They'd all been in the studio canteen before filming and the African guy got the wrong order. He said to the waitress, "this is not my sandwich ". Catherine threw it in ad lib. See his face 😂

@seanscanlon90675 ай бұрын
I don't know if this is true or not but apparently in a break between filming, the actors were eating from a finger buffet and the African character did actually say the 'line' this is not my sandwich after he put it down and the picked up the wrong one again or something along those lines and so on this particular take of filming, Catherine Tate added in the line as an ad lib. Which would explain why he broke character and could not keep a straight face.
@chrishorsfield48935 ай бұрын
@@seanscanlon9067 Catherine Tate said in a DVD extra that the original line in the script was "This is not my suitcase" - But they wasn't allowed to use that line, so it was changed to sandwich.

How come I've never seen that before? That was funny AF. Being dumb without being mean spirited can and should still be funny.
@jedislap87262 жыл бұрын
To put it into context, the character she plays in this sketch is one that always says that she can do it, no matter what the problem is. It's not that she's dumb she just oversells her abilities to please or impress people.
@manuginobilisbaldspot4242 жыл бұрын
@@jedislap8726 I don't need context...you know what I mean. People treat comedy as always having to be overly smart and never daring to cross in to the boundaries of other groups of people. This was funny without being insulting or demeaning BECAUSE she's an idiot. Anyone who tries to talk to someone in another language like that is an idiot lmao...that's clearly part of the character, even as you described it. Anyway, it was freakin' hilarious.

Of course at the time this sketch aired around 2006/07 it was just the "Translator Sketch". The Offensive tag has only been added in the last few years as the woke brigade reared their head. This sketch is more to do with how dumb the Catherine Tate character is rather than anything else.

Apparently it took 16 takes,12 of which were due to the Chinese lady bursting into laughter, rest were the African guy. There were so many comedic elements to this. For example. The character said she’d done a TEFL (teach English as a foreign language) course in her gap year. A gap year is taking a year out of education between finishing school at 18, and going to university at 19. A TELF course is clever, but basic. It can be completed in a week, and in no way does it qualify anyone to be a translator.
