Other than Catherine’s treatment of the serfs, I think she had an amazing reign in Russia. She was highly intelligent, curious about and supportive of to the Sciences, a more than competent author, and well understood the excellent way to run her military…put the best and most qualified in charge. As for her love life, people just need to get over it. That probably helped her reduce stress and remain sane. Catherine was also aware of the danger of marrying again and wisely steered clear of that.

Even prior to watching this excellent mini documentary about Catherine “the Great,” I have always admired this exceptionally bright and powerful queen. Undoubtedly, she was one of the most remarkable and clever monarchs of the world, at par with her contemporary Frederick “the Great” of Prussia, as well as her predecessors Louis XIV of France and Elizabeth I of England. The fact that such an amazing lady was particularly promiscuous, in my opinion, places Catherine, decisively, among the most fascinating historical personas in European history!

What did she do? Told a architect, carpenter, mason to build, send a soldier to battle to die, perhaps she labor in a field, she climb a mountain, spend her time in academic studies, is she great because she did it or had someone else do it. Tell me what great about this woman. I use to think the same thing about many French Kings until I personally read accounts of these individuals many French Kings cannot compare to Napoleon the things he did a artillery officer who rose to rank. So, after researching it on several different Sources It is Definitely A Spinel Not a Ruby. Infact it is a 400 Carat Spinel that is Rimmed in Diamond encrusted Oak leaves. The Spinel had actually been In the royal Collection for quite a while before being used in the Imperial Crown.

I was very pleased that the commentator attributed Tsar Paul Petrovich's birth to Catherine's infantile husband and not to her first recorded lover. It makes absolute sense: there was the very strong physical resemblance to the murdered Tsar, and it was well within Catherine's spitefulness towards her heir to have ascribed his birth to a lover. Her second, illegitimate, son - Alexei Bobrinsky - was smuggled away at birth and Catherine never made any effort to see him. That devolved upon her heir: when Paul came to the throne he sought out Alexei, calling him brother, and they had a very natural and kind relationship.

The fact that she deposed her husband doesn't make her a power hungry tyrant. On the contrary, by doing that she elevated the Russian Empire due to her reforms and successful military campaings against her neighbours. On the other hand, I can't judge her for her private life. As Terry Thomas said (see down below), how can you judge her for doing that when different Kings or Emperors had mistresses? One thing is for certain, if you got her on her good side, then you're set for life especially if you were a poor bloke that knew how to please her both inside and outside her chamber. Yes, she kept the men in check, but she could not keep herself in check, great leader indeed. The best leaders are those that lead by example. Having power doesn't make you a leader, and being calculating doesn't equal greatness. I think Prince Albert and Queen Victoria are better examples of leaders.

Promiscous means having more than one man at the same time, which wasn't the case with her. She had relashionships one after another which became shorter and shorter, when she had figured out that her great loves didn't work. Poor Catherine! She was the philosophe on the throne, and people judge her and over her from their point of view, which often consists of envie and sexisme ... f.e. what was allowed to male rulers wasn't allowed to a brillant woman ....

I’m sure someone already said this, but the part about the Orlov’s is backwards … Grigori was Catherine’s lover, and Alexei was the one who is rumoured to have murdered Peter III; I’m pretty sure someone already pointed out that the Center red stone on the Imperial Crown is a spinel, not a ruby. Of all of the biographies I watch or read, Catherine the Great’s seem to have the most errors across the board. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m guessing it’s due to all of the rumours about her during her life, but some of these things are easy to fact check now. Not to be overly critical, as I do love the channel!

Have you read Robert K. Massie's "Catherine The Great: Portrait of a Woman" (pub. in 2012 ) ? I thought it very good. Massie has authored quite a few biographies of Russian Monarchs- Peter The Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, & The Romanovs.

It seems likely that she may have had some of them tested, but, again, it has not been proven as fact. There are a lot of errors, and rumours present as fact, in this one. I know how she came into power she married into the ruling family of Russia later marrying her relative. She was very successful in foreign politics, she never lost a war in her 34 years old reign, crushed or had crushed pretty much all her enemies, liked PR and cared about her image a lot, was very popular among intellectual elites of the time because she supported them financially. Was also well-read and very charismatic, even people who disliked her used to admit how she knew how to please everyone. So she had a very long successful reign, then her son came and started trashing everything. He was killed in 4 years, and her reputation started to shine even better in comparison. For the aristocrats(=elites) of the end of 18th century she was also almost the only living legend of the Ancient Regime world left that was crushing and burning before their eyes.

She was really GREAT! Sophie was only supposed to be a docile little wife and a broodmare. But she had ambitions and acted out on them. Nobody batted an eyelid when a man took what he wanted. But when SHE dared to do so, she was slandered. Double measure some? Well, history gave her the correct name and vindicated her - rightly so. Sure she was despotic, but that was due to the time and circumstances. One cannot rule such a wide dominion with charm and good manners. When Alexander the Great was presented with the Gordian knot he just took out his sword and cut it into pieces. Catherine did the same with the Gordian knots that she faced: Away with the incompetent husband. Anything that isn't up-to-date any more or displeases her: Be gone. And if you are not willing I will use force. ;-)

Several male rulers throughout history were assassinated or deposed when they took what they wanted and gained too much power (e.g. Caesar, Nero, Caligula) ..
