📜 History of Catherine the Great, Part 4
Catherine had great ambitions to reform Russia according to her own highest ideals, but she soon found that the reality of governance made those ideals difficult to achieve. She also found herself tangled in war, rebellion, and (scandalously) smallpox.

As a Russian it is very sad for me that you glance over all of that Serf business. The situation was much more complicated than you could think. Majority of the victorious military were officers of high classes, as were those who put her in power. She resented her decision of further enslaving serfs all her life, but as a diplomat she just could not do that. She just couldn't take away the serfs from the people that supported her reign, and made anything she did possible. She made a choice, and chose to support high classes by all means. It resolved into the bloom of literature (AND literacy!), music, law, education, development of Russian language as we know it, and countless other things, but in turn it meant slavery for commoners. It is a great tragedy of her character and a great tragedy in Russia. This politics, took over by her successors would, in centuries to come, flame into the bloodiest revolution of all, red as the hot rage of yesterday's slaves.

I know it sounds surprising that Catherine included a Buddhist delegation in her assembly to decide on new laws, but it actually isn't, because Buddhists formed a decent-size chunk of Russia's population at the time, thanks to the Oirat people living between the Caspian Sea and Mongolia being almost entirely Buddhist.

@YaroslavNechaev 7 жыл бұрын
First of all, there is no such thing as "Ukrainian half". Second of all, there was no guns to anyones heads, how stupid can one be to imagine such a ridiculous scene. The whole thing was not about "oppression", but about the fact that the legitimate government of Ukraine was overthrown by some random jerks, which almost threw the entire country into anarchy. People of Crimea just didn't want any of that. Honestly, these random youtube people with their deep understanding on how post-soviet countries people think.

Yaroslav Nechaev I do apologise. Of course the people who simply wanted to be able to decide which direction their country would go in, rather than being puppets of Putin, were "random jerks", whereas the Russian military who invaded foreign territory, staged an illegal referendum and then posted their men with loaded assault rifles outside every single polling station were what? I always enjoy watching videos about history on the extra credits channel, they always sound so poetic and sum up history pretty well, and I also think that when this is done they should do Alexander III the great of Macedon it's going to be short but there's enough to cover. This was great nonetheless.

I'm a middle school student, and to be honest I dislike history (it's one of my least favorite subjects) but I love watching these videos, there informative and really grab the attention of kids like me. This channel makes having to learn history not feel like a chore, I even watch these videos on my own free will whenever I have some time to kill. Thank you for making these videos, this isn't just coming from me, it's coming from ALL other students just like me😁

Catherine: What I would like is some PERSPECTIVE, and a nice wine with that. Russians: Uhhhh..... Catherine: Since you have no perspective, how about you supply the food, and I supply the perspective. A 1724 wine would go with that.

craby man Yes, they did. Barely above 50%, but still. Poles were the biggest ethnicity in the Commonwealth and made virtually all of rulling class of the country. Before the 18th century nobility in Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine adopted Polish culture and considered themselves true Poles. Even more propper Poles than peasants and burghers from core Polish regions. The true nation of the country. Ethnic Lithuanians at that time were peasants, and thus weren't considered as part of the nation, along with other people of lower class. That situation changed with adoption of the Constitution of 1791 which declared all people living in the country subjects of the king and part of the Polish nation. The same constitution named the country Commonwealth of Poland (Rzeczpospolita Polska), so I think calling this state colloquially known as Poland-Lithuania just Poland in the context of the second half of 18th century is correct.
