"As the cathode rays carry a charge of negative electricity, are deflected by an electrostatic force as if they were negatively electrified, and are acted on by a magnetic force in just the way in which this force would act on a negatively electrified body moving along the path of these rays, I can see no escape from the conclusion that they are charges of negative electricity carried by particles of matter."

70 years old, been in electronics for 50 years. Very enlightening presentation. Even better yet, I am proud to see anybody that knows electricity is electrons flowing, and they go from negative to positive. The major publishers and educators pushing for the last 75 years to make a positive to negative current flow, including arrow direction on transistors, at least to me, is a crime against common sense. I will recommend this to anybody new coming along. YOU ARE A GENTLEMAN AND A SCHOLLAR!

Yes, if it was a true vacuum, it wouldn't work because there would be nothing to carry the current. No atoms means no plasma. In a true vacuum, you can apply all the voltage you want, but nothing will happen.

it would work. we actually dont want any atoms in the tube the voltage is applied from outside and also electrons from a outer source. We just want to see the electron movement in the tube.

Nice demo but the explanation about the relation between the magnet polarity and the deflection of the ray is wrong. One would need to reason more carefully about the direction of the B field due to the magnetic dipole and then use the right-hand rule to determine the direction of force on the charges (qv x B).

I believe there is an extremely small amount of gas under low pressure in the tube, not "no gas". The reason why there is a beam, is because there is a small amount of gas with electrons that are fluorescing, right?

@jrv01007 I agree with you, there must be some gas under low pressure in the tube. Otherwise you wouldn't see the beam of electrons until they'd hit the wall of the tube, because they can't interact with particles when there is a vacuum in the tube. Electrons are mostly made visible with hydrogen under low pressure. The color of the beam seems to point to hydrogen as well, for it has a major spectral line at 486 nanometers, which is the wavelength of some blue- greenish color.

Nice demo, but there is no negative pole of a magnet: the poles are not attracting or repelling the electrons. The force on the electrons is at right angles to the field and their velocity. The magnet is behind the plane of the tube, so there is a horizontal component of the field, which deflects the electron beam vertically.
