Luke 20:38, where Jesus says: "He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive." (NIV). Since we live in him eternally,....anyone who believes in the Lord does NOT die. So Mary is not dead, but alive in heaven. The bible scripture your are thinking about is referring to what witches would do what is called Necromancy - which is the practice of attempting to communicate with the dead, for the purpose of divination or fortune telling. They would end up opening portals to evil spirits instead. That is strictly forbidden in the Catholic Church. But to ask the living to pray for them, in the form of intercessory prayer, is no different, than if I were to ask you to pray for me.

Our Lady is very close to us, she has appeared to us many times over history and warned us to repent and pray for peace and conversion of sinners. Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes, and many more apparitions throughout the world. We honour her as the Mother of God and our mother. Our Lady is present at the Holy Eucharist. Wherever Jesus is, Our Lady is there.
