Why does some idiot have to see a song as a political statement? For your information it was written by the great Scottish songwriter. Ewan McColl.

A lovely song but the best version ever is by The Johnstons recorded in the 60's. Our house at home was an open house for the travelling people which were known at the time as "the Tinkers"...because most of them were tinsmiths.

Beautiful song made famous by some of the greatest Irish singers, but it's not an Irish song nor was it even written about Irish travellers specifically. It was written by an Englishman who was half Scots for the Radio Ballad documentary about English travellers.

OK, I will give you that Ewan MacColl was born in England but his parents were Scottish so we are going to claim him as Scottish. For sure he was not Irish and I do get a bit pissed off at the Irish claiming Scottish or English folk music as their own.
@andrewwigglesworth30303 жыл бұрын
@@eckyhen Ewan MacColl was born and bred in Salford, Lancashire and lived the whole of his life living and working in England (well, when not touring of course). He had Scottish parents and learnt a love of folk songs especially from his mother, but he went on to learn and love English folk songs too and was instrumental in the 2nd folk revival in the whole of Britain. What can you say about MacColl. He was not a nationalist, but an internationalist, a communist with an interest and love of folk music, dance and song. He was a product of his environment and politics, and those were rooted in his early life in Broughton, Salford. Like many of us, he had a mixed background culturally, though it has to be said that English and Scottish folk and working class cultures are very close to each other. Anyway, yes, he was not Irish, nor were the songs he wrote. It's often not Irish people (though its' common enough) who claim English and Scottish songs as Irish. It's all kinds of people internationally too who have no idea what they are talking about and have an almost insulting disregard. The other day I found some American berk who claimed that Scarborough Fair was an ancient "Irish celtic" song ... ffs!
@MrMassivefavour2 жыл бұрын
MacColls legacy of the beautiful songs of the British folk revival (which he lead) are often covered by great artists. Not too many do them proud. Liam Clancy and Luke Kelly being the exceptions probably. Yes, he was Salford born and bread but he travelled alot to learn and create songs. Think of "30 ft trailer" which he sang in broad Scottish. It's said his greatest love song was "The first time I ever saw your face" Covered by Roberta Flack, which he couldn't travel to America for to receive his Grammy as he was blacklisted by the McArthyite Right..... But for me, he greatest love song was to his home town. Which Luke Kelly made a thing of beauty in my opinion. "Dirty Old Town" kzbin.info/www/bejne/raCxoKWNa8d8q9E

Hi Ann Maguire ....actually re reading my comment it comes across blunt...sorry about that......this performance is really top.....it's a song about the brittish nomads......written by Ewan McColl the brittish folk singer. it got popular when the dubliners and clancy recorded.....but it's English folk .....same as dirty old town or the wild rover.....so it's an adopted irish hit ☺
@patrickmcdonagh84138 жыл бұрын
maxvolmue99 Hi, just spotted your comment and must say I beg to differ, those British nomads and Irish Travellers or Pavees, are one and the same for the most part. This song is almost an anthem for Irish Travellers my friend. And notice the lyrics Thinker and Gyspy rover, quite clearly referring to Irish Travellers. Lovely rendition of the song must add.
