We make a wood box and load it. We continue to outfit the cabin, hanging a lantern, hooks, a cabinet, pipe box etc. At long last we prepare our first meal using vegetables from the garden and venison harvested last fall.

The part where you guys toasted to the cabin and made small talk while eating was my favorite part. It was so simple but very moving. It was the exact scenario that took place thousands of times on the frontier. The feeling of we built this with our bare hands and know we have a life here. And then you talked about the need to get some meat. It was the most heartfelt historically accurate conversation Ive ever heard. Congratulations!!

Those are kind words, Caleb. I do enjoy staying in a first person role… somehow talking about the Superbowl or current politics wrecks the ambience.

Congratulations Peter on completing the cabin and having your first meal with your wife. I have watched from the beginning when you started the construction. I'm a history buff and enjoyed every week you shared your journey of this exciting educational lesson of how a real log cabin was built in the early 1700's with the the tools and skills it took to build a master piece with authenticity. Peter, you are a true craftsman, which is rare these days. Excited to see what you do next, God willing, on your educational journey of sharing what simple life was like back then. God bless you and your family.

Outstanding! My gr-gr-gr grandfather made clay pipes in volume as well as Whiskey. After coming here from Ireland, his first land purchase was made with clay pipes, taxed Whiskey, four fitted hogs and one hundred dollars. I can imagine him telling the story to his grandchildren with them asking "Where did you get a hundred dollars?" with him replying in his Irish brogue "Untaxed Whiskey." You two remind me so much of my uncle Bill and aunt Mary. Bill literally found a spot in the woods of middle Michigan, squared on it and build a one room cabin out of scrap wood he scrounge for town. They had a great garden a pump well he dug and an outhouse. Very seldom did he go into town, just to buy Flour, sugar, salt, rolling papers and tobacco. He used to say " if I can't hunt for it, fish for it or grow it, I don't need it. I wished he would have lived long enough for me to get some years on and learn stuff from him. I find it odd how people refer to living without all the so-called "modern conveniences" as living a "simple life" when in actuality it is labor intensive. However; the rewards, satisfaction, and appreciation for what one has is innumerable. I just have one question. How were you so blessed to find such a beautiful woman, as Cathy, that gladly walks that path with you. All the best for the both of you.

Simple but, hard. That does pretty much sums up early pioneer life. As for finding my soulmate, just damn lucky I guess.

Hi there great segment, I could just smell the vittles from here. Fyi, peas were eaten from the knife. The flat of the was used to mash some of the peas and then used to scoop the mashed peas onto the flat of the knife. The knife with the peas were carefully raised up to the mouth where they were carefully taken off the knife by the lips... Knives, spoons, and fingers where used for eating until forks became fashionable. I believe it was King Charles 2nds Portuguese wife who introduced forks to the English Court, though I'm sure they had been seen before by Englishmen who had traveled. She made them fashionable...

Thanks for sharing that L.D. I’m happiest on my historical treks to take only my knife … all about the weight and manners don’t matter.

Hubby has an antique carriage lantern that takes a candle. Might come in useful , yet. Love the wood box. Loved 'meeting' your wife. I guess she is the one normally behind the camera?

I'm not so sure in the log cabin of the 1700s. I'd be happy to dine with him with or without a hat. An old friend of mine, who's 96, stated a couple years ago when we went out to lunch, that he would never sit at the dinner table with a man with his hat on. I take mine off or leave it on depending on the circumstances.
