Hi. Unless I am going to an event, my coat and boot options are for function... No slip, warmth, ability to wear layers, keep me dry, etc. I have always struggled with fashion boots. I have wide calves, and due to orthopedic issues, need flats and no slip soles. I was never able to wear heels in any shoe. Shoes are always about comfort and support. Hope it's an easy winter! Keep warm.

Me, too. Function, function, function. If I don't look chic in my Canadian shearling snow boots, oh, well! My husband's family gave me grief about how unfeminine they look when I started wearing them 25 years ago, but let me tell you, the Canadians know how to dress for snow and ice! So what if they aren't high fashion? I'm not going to slip on the ice or freeze; that's what counts.

Another thing you can do with a belted coat - if it has loops - tie it in the back, just snug enough to give a slight fitted look at the waist. I have two different trench coats which look fantastic with the belt tied at the back, and super dumpy if tied around my middle and fastened in the front. They basically look like different coats based on how the belt is tied.

Great tip about the belt, thanks for sharing!

I hate puffy coats too. But, I have to tell you a funny story. One of my friends bought a new coat for our trip to New York City at Christmas. We were on a bus tour with dozens of other friends. My friend had a white spot on her new coat and I brushed it off. It floated through the air. It was a feather. Strange…where did a feather come from? But then another white feather popped out, and then another and another. The new coat was spitting out feathers. She was furious and swore to take it back as soon as she got home. I laughed at my friend even though she was so angry. I literally plucked her all the way to and from New York City. So….absolutely no puffy or feather coats.

I agree on coat length. I don't like the short coats that are out this year. No belts for me either. Mittens are warmer too. Pop of color by my face for sure. Rounded toe for better foot health. I can no longer wear pointed toe shoes.

I just bought a new wool coat and without knowing it, I followed your advice. It has a faux fur collar but it's detachable so that's fine. I wear my tall boots with that. I also like to dress in one colour with a pop of colour with the scarf. Thanks Cathy, have a great evening. Hugs to you and your husband. 🫂💕

I love your channel because you give options for the none standard petite plus range. I have looked at influencers who suggest that "true fashion" has to look a particular way (invariably in styles based on their own slimmer taller bodies), citing shapes which just don't work on me. A perfect example is that for evening you should wear high heels with pointed toes - these look ridiculous on my sturdy little legs, almond toes with medium block heels are far more flattering. Keep up the good work, you are looking great, and your channel is super helpful.

Hi Cathy! I totally agree with you on pointed footwear-although some are cute( I used to have some cute kitten sling backs ) for work but I find a lot of the pointed shoes/ boots can at times be uncomfortable as well as unflattering looking like an elf 🤣❤

Don’t hate me, but when I lived in Hong Kong I had a winter coat custom made out of a heavy cashmere cloth. The lining is silk satin that the tailor had embroidered, but with an abstract pattern in the same color. It is still perfection and since I only wear it a few months in the winter it looks new. HK was a sometimes difficult place to live but getting custom made clothing was a perk.

I like the North Face coat on you, it looks great! I have a Talbots wool blend coat that I got last year, and it's so warm and I love the way it looks and fits! It's similar to this year's Albury stadium coat .

Hi Cathy, I live in an area like you where our winters are very long and we can get bitter cold weather in the single digits. I have several coats, but on those bitter cold days, I prefer a long coat to the calf for extra warmth even when running errands to the grocery store or to the health club. I also have several boots, but tend to wear a no heel completely flat boot especially if there's any bit of snow or ice for fear of slipping. Not the most fashionable look, but more functional. I agree about wearing colorful hats, scarves, gloves. I have never used a bronzer, I like that idea....something different. I have fair skin too and like L'oreal products.

I have a lot of coats and jackets. I have one like the first one you shared. It’s a maroon color. It’s not for cold. But it’s okay as long as it’s in the 40’s. It doesn’t get that cold where I live. And we moved to get away from the cold. I don’t like to hear about wind chills. I bought some fleece lined leggings to wear when it’s colder here. And to me anything 50 or under is cold. I did buy a teal puffer jacket either last year or the year before. And I don’t care what I look like when I wear it. If it’s cold I just want to be warm. I need to buy more gloves. I did buy a new camel dress coat to wear. And I need gloves for it. I’m always cold. I like the blue coat with the belt. That was cute. But I need a hood. I don’t like to wear hats. But I will put my hood up. I think my granddaughter took my one warm scarf. But she lives in Ohio, that’s where we moved from. Thinking Georgia would be warmer. And last year it was super cold here around Christmas. Our backyard is like a wind tunnel. And it’s always got a breeze blowing. That’s where I’m always the coldest. I go out front to feed all the cats and kittens it is t that bad. I’m not sure why that is but I do know that it’s at least ten degrees colder back there. I was out earlier with my dogs. And I kept telling them to hurry up because I was cold. But one of the cats was back there so that wasn’t going to happen. I know rounded toes are better for your feet. A podiatrist told me that years ago. If you have more room in the toe box the shoes or boots will be more comfortable.

I just bought a magenta puffer jacket so that my husband can find me in the store when we go shopping! We were out a couple of weeks ago and he forgot his phone, so he couldn't call me to find out where I was. I was wearing a brown sweater and he just couldn't see me in the crowd.

Like you, I am on the hunt for a wool overcoat in a more midi length, or definitely below the knee. I live in Ohio where winter drags on, so I have a collection of coats. I'm looking for a straight, classic style and it's difficult to find. Way too many puffer coats out there. I have a down jacket for being outside with my dog and it's warm as toast, but I wonder why classic wool coats are in short supply. The search continues! These are good tips to avoid looking frowsy! And a big YES to the fabric shaver!

I had a couple of coats like that 30 years ago, and they were awesome. They looked great and the quality was amazing. I was wondering, myself, why classic coats like that aren't available in America anymore. The closest thing are oversize coats that look bad even on skinny 6' models.

Almond toe for me too! I actually found a nice pair of wide width long boots with a chunky sole at Penningtons. The leg of the boot is wide too and I find it easy to zip them up even with pants tucked in (keeps my pants legs dry when there’s a lot of snow). I love my black puffer coat from Reitmans because it’s knee length, not bulky and has the zipper that opens at both ends, handy for climbing in and out of my SUV. Recently my husband encouraged me to buy a long wool coat at Aritzia. It’s camel, very warm and I love it! A bit of a splurge but I’ll have it for years as it’s such a classic (a lot like the one in the picture of Kate Middleton in your video). Had to chuckle when you mentioned coats with bulky collars - I used to have one that looked nice in the store but when I sat in the car the collar would ride up and get in my face, and I’d get makeup on it. Very annoying and I couldn’t turn my head and see clearly when driving. I donated that coat so fast! 🤦♀️😂

@@stylewithcathyover50 Yeah, it’s my first camel coloured anything and I happened to be wearing a black turtle neck that day and saw that I liked the combination. So far I’ve worn a black, navy, red or winter white top under it. I think that’s what makes the difference, the colour closest to my face. I’m not typically an earth tone person otherwise.

Cathy you are absolutely spot on about belts and the almond toe shoe. I am 5'2" about 155 pounds and an apple shape. I am in Houston so our winters are mild. I miss the Wisconsin winters and cold weather. It is in the 60's now during the day. Friday 😮was 81. My latest shoe purchase was a lug sole Franco Sarto loafers with tassels that goes with everything...an ecru/ivory color. Love them. I also purchased black suede Vionic loafers in a super simple style. Arch support but not a heavy sole. I wear thin ankle socks with these. I tried the pointy toes and they looked ridiculous on me. Returned. Almond shape is best. I have a pair of black Bzees booties for colder days. You are the one influencer that gets it about belts. Thank you for this great video.

I have a pair of Blondo boots from 5 years ago and they have been very good. They are low-heeled, almond toed, waterproof construction .. but still dressy. Another winner has been UGG lace-up .. looks like a 1950's ski boot. For some reason they are expensive looking and the lace-up creates nice ankle shape. I wish they would bring them back because I need a new pair.
