That is taught by many, another thing that's taught is a normal constraint across the mirror line. I actually disagree with both methods, and don't understand why people let the mirror function rule their modeling techniques. I believe there's a far better method, build a symmetric curve across the mirror line/plane, that produces a much better condition across the mirror plane.
