I've watched about a dozen of these "cop pulls over velomobile" videos and almost every cop pulls the "I'm just concerned for your safety" line. It is their job to enforce the law, but to do that they must KNOW the law. Every one of the cops in these videos are completely unfamiliar with the traffic code for bicycles in their own states. Once the velo rider defends what they are doing, the cops back up with the "I'm just concerned for your safety" bit. It's not their job to second guess the law, if someone is within the law, leave them alone.

Ya, it can get boring. I know a few cops that sit on their phone, watch netflix on their patrol PC, and even others that just fall asleep. I actually encountered a cop that was pretty cool. Anoter truck and i were speeding 10-15mph over. Think the sheriff didnt want to bother with us, so he flashed his emergency light to slow us down. then went back to blackout mode. Must have hit an interesting point in the movie or we woke him up from a nap. Hell, he might have been waiting for the oilfield truckers that love to book it. Think it was the same cop that clocked me at 130 in a 70. He pulled me over, had a small talk then let me go with a warning. Nice guy.

The problem was that the other cars weren't going to risk passing you on a double yellow with a cop behind them so you were holding up traffic. They couldn't tell it was a bicycle either. I would have scooted over a bit and made it easier for them. Maybe even waved them around. It's too wide with that body on it to treat it like it's a regular bicycle. I rode for many years but never with the I have a right to be here attitude. I know who's going to lose in the car vs. bike battle. I really can't see how those things could possibly be better to ride. They have to be heavier, I would think more susceptible to being blown by side winds or passing big rigs. Way less maneuverable and you can't just hop off it if you need to. What's the point?
@Craxler6 жыл бұрын
However, a bicycle is far more unstable and you need to respect it as a driver too, which essentially makes a bike wider than it is, with this bike its far more stable and you dont wobble side to side at all

icantsignin - I think it depends on the jurisdiction. In some states, bikes count as cars in terms of obeying and following the rules of the road, and drivers treat them as such. Obviously you don't need a license to ride a bike, but you are expected to stop at stop signs, indicate turns etc. craxler- As for bikes being unstable, I disagree with that notion.
@12tuber12346 жыл бұрын
There actually wasn't a problem. It's ok for cars to travel behind slower traffic until it's safe to pass. We do it everyday. Push on the brake for a moment, scan, signal, pass. these are elementary skills every driver is required to have. You think there is a problem because your narrative is derived from your view through your windshield. It's obvious that the governing code is not derived from your view because the flaming eyeball was not cited. The velomobile operator was not in violation of the code that regulates the use of the road. As it stands here we have two ideals, 1. The way IcantSignIn wants things to be and 2. The way the governing code makes it. This isn't the preschool sandbox. You would do well to learn about how it works. And while we are handing out suggestions you should learn a second language and travel to a foreign country. It's well known that this helps to develop empathy, the most valuable human trait.

As a dutch guy who lived in Texas for a year, I know how unfriendly the US countryside and more specific the roads are to bikes. After a few tries to keep doing what I do in the Netherlands, which is using the bike for short trips up to 6 miles to save gas, the environment and my own happiness and life expectancy, I reluctantly gave up. In Texas it was obvious my life expectancy plummeted using a bike on public roads. Respect for what you're doing. The bike your using is very common in The Netherlands and highly effective. Jaw dropping that people assume it's a car, but how else could they in the land of the car? They don't know any better.. One tip; basically everybody riding this bike here, uses a bike flag for inreased visibility (the most apparent drawback of this low centre of gravity bike). Keep up the good, bike pioneering work!

Good interaction with the Officer. Yeah I have seen videos of Velomobiles being pulled over because the cops think it is a motor vehicle without license plates. When he figured out you were on a human powered trike... he seemed to know the law - that's good. The whole "concerned for your safety" thing was more "backpedaling" because he really had no cause to pull you over. That was good how you handled the license request too. It is understandable how police in the US don't know about velomobiles because of how uncommon they are here but... really they should.

Great video! That was actually kinda cute. The deputy really just wanted to know what the heck that was, but officers feel like they need to come up with some legalese excuse for their personal curiosity. I used to ride a fast touring bicycle, and I had a couple stops basically because they just couldn't believe I was running highway speed on the (local) highway. They wanted to tell me what the radar gun said, just in case I didn't know. I took it as a compliment. Later in college I drove pizzas in my personal car, so I met every night cop in town because they kept seeing me on the street at 3am and wondered if I was some kind of drug dealer. (Two of them were actually my jujutsu students but didn't recognize the car lol!) Anyway, I would wave and hold my pizza hat out the window before they even walked up, which made them more relaxed because I was legitimizing their need to know. Then, when I eventually changed cars, I met them all again, and a couple even asked, "Didn't you used to have an Escort?" They just want to know who's who in the zoo. Then, once going home from work, I had one pull me over and I had no idea what he was thinking... after dawn on a Sunday morning, straight road, clear conditions, under the speed limit. We chit-chatted for a few seconds and then he admitted, "I was just kinda bored and checked your plate, and I just had to know why you've been pulled over 8 times in the last 2 months without ever getting a ticket. Well, I guess that makes me number 9. I'll put a note on the system for you." I love my cops. They're doing their job the best they can, so I don't have to. It's all in good fun :)

Most "Bicycle licenses' are just ciies/police depts keeping a record that you own a particular bike for purposes of ID if it is ever stolen, Not like a license for a car where you have to take a test to show you know how to drive it safely. I doubt there will ever be a "Drivers License" for human powered vehicles, although there are plenty of cyclists who should learn how to ride legally and safely, Can you imagine having a DHPV? +T E -- It's ok to disagree. The fact is you can get a ticket for both speeding and impeding traffic. The laws do not rank them in terms of "more dangerous." Impeding traffic often causes other drivers to lose their minds, especially if they can't see what's causing the slow-down. This, in turn, leads to some of them doing careless and unsafe things to get past the obstruction.

My response was, "Then why are we having this conversation?" I get that you'd have no idea what it was and that is a huge part of why police stop them. It isn't that they feel it's a danger, it's that they are seeing an alien spaceship or something and fell the need to figure it out. Then once they realize it is a variant of a bicycle their law and order side feels a need to justify standing there with someone that isn't a perp so they flip into the false safety concern bit. It's how they are programmed.

Ok..... You say you have a right to a whole lane,and it appears that your conveyance takes up most of the lane. Sooo... why do you want to ride where the limit is 60 on a machine that only goes maybe 20? Is it right to hold up a line of cars and trucks , that, unable,to legally pass you , are drastically slowed. Seems kind of selfish to me, not to mention a hazard.
@TheFlamingEyeball6 жыл бұрын
First, the road I was on at the time is marked as a cycle way in Virginia. I'm not being selfish, I'm just out riding. Second, there is no other way to travel to this destination....the US has precious few dedicated cycle paths (I wish I lived in Holland sometimes). Third, I'm not 'holding up' anyone. Yes, I'm traveling slower than motorized vehicles, and the posted speed limit is 55, but I'm still a legal vehicle to travel on these roads. As you noticed, I moved over to allow safe passing as soon as I was able, but I shouldn't be expected to pull over at EVERY opportunity to allow cars to pass. Forth, VA law allows them to pass me even on a double yellow: § 46.2-804, 5. "Wherever a highway is marked with double traffic lines consisting of a solid line immediately adjacent to a broken line, no vehicle shall be driven to the left of such line if the solid line is on the right of the broken line, except (i) when turning left for the purpose of entering or leaving a public, private, or commercial road or entrance or (ii) in order to pass a pedestrian or a device moved by human power, including a bicycle, skateboard, or foot-scooter, provided such movement can be made safely." So what happens is that people don't know the laws under which they are operating cars. As long as they can pass safely, including giving the cyclists at least 3 feet of clearance (which went into affect July 1, 2014), they can pass. I've seen MANY times where a vehicle can pass safely, and doesn't because they think they can't pass on the double yellow....but if it were a tractor, they have no problem passing them on the double yellow. Know the laws. See my "Protocol for passing" video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZ7aiqt9bLtkpa8Thanks for watching and subscribing!

Cycle path was probably intended for bicycles , rather than pedal power machines three times as wide as a bike. Just because you have a "right" to do something, doesn't necessarily mean you should. Was not aware of the statute concerning solid lines in you state. Here in Florida we cannot cross one . Even so, the size of your vehicle would force a driver far into the oncoming lane. Seems like there must be better places to ride, considering you are joyriding. No destination and all that.

If he was concerned about your safety, he could pull over someone who passed too close. It’s not about getting cyclists off the road, but getting drivers to be more mindful of other people on the road. Nice “bike” by the way.

I agree. I believe if more people actually cycled, they would be better drivers when in their cars.

Regarding school buses, as a former school bus driver I can tell you that you *may* pass if it is the yellow alternating lights that are blinking, just not the red. Also, since children are often injured by cars clipping the bus as they attempt to pass, drivers must keep the red lights blinking as long as anyone inside the bus is standing - this includes very slow moving and special needs students. Generally, things folks don’t understand about why school buses do certain things boils down to a safety issue (based on past accidents through the decades across the nation). unless unaware the flashing lights are on (which can happen), a driver isn’t going to hold up cars on the road (and chance anyone calling in) unless it is a hard and fast procedural necessity. So on a road that rutal where it is unsafe to allow cars to pass when the bus is stopped, they may have been cleaning up a “biological mess”or waiting for a child to be seated or disembark. There is also a cardinal rule that you are not allowed to talk to parents nor let them step up onto the bus to speak with you, but hand them prepared cards instructing them how to contact your dispatch office if there’s a problem and deal with someone who’s not on a schedule or endangering children by holding up impatient traffic, just FYI.

I'm perfectly fine with them pulling you over. Mainly because of the no visibility because you are so low to the ground. A regular bicycle rides high enough to be seen over a car door. It would be so easy to turn right into you when making a right turn. Most drivers have problems noticing regular bikes and motorbikes. You're just to small.
@samwalker75676 жыл бұрын
In the UK seated and recumbent bicycles are recommended to carry a bright flag on a tall pole to help with exactly this. I don't think it's mandatory but most people do opt to use one as it hugely improves the visibility of such bikes.

How much do these things go for? How do they handle? Can they fit someone who is 6ft 5? Can these machines handle cities with potholes all over the concrete jungle? How does it handle on hills? Sorry for all the questions I'm actually amazed at how this thing looks.
@scottmcelhiney3236 жыл бұрын
Might want to check out bentrideronline.com and read some of the velomobile section. Some of these are wicked fast with the right "engine" powering them. A fit rider can cruise around 30mph in a Quest on the flat and the 24 hour record is over 30mph average speed set by an Austrian who I believe was 53years old at the time riding a stock Milan velomobile. Most come with suspension, many can handle very tall riders. Hills are slower for most due to weight, BUT they are generally geared well for climbing and you don't fall over if you go too slow. Their interia helps flatten out rolling terrain, since you can go so fast down hills and on flats, they tend to carry that speed quite a ways up hills. Cost is the issue as good ones are $5K and up... way way up. Oh, and you can put an electric assist on one if you really need help up longer hills or aren't in the greatest shape and want help staying up with traffic off of stop lights. That is more of an American thing than European though, but it is starting to catch on. Amazing what even a 250watt assist will do when wind resistance isn't much of an issue.

justsome guy I have a problem with cops trying to shoe-horn into behavior they expect you to exhibit in order to "keep you safe." If it's legal, it's not business of theirs whether or not it's safe enough for them to be comfortable with it. They are not hired and authorized to make sure that "everyone is safe" and they can't use their badge to enforce their own personal level of comfort with other people's behavior. They are supposed to enforce the law, but they don't know the law, often enough, such as with this case. The cop argued about whether this guy riding a velomobile in the middle of the road was acceptable, when he should have known whether it was legal or not. It is, and therefore the cop should have looked, decided that it was a legal activity, and moved on. Forcing a stop (aka, "an arrest" because arrest means stop) because he was concerned is going outside his authority. He even said, "I can't have you riding down the middle of the road in that thing." He can't? When it's perfectly legal? What arrogance. Bad cop - no donut.

T E Uh, public welfare and safety is also part of police officer's MO. He can ask you to stop doing things he thinks is unsafe, but he can't enforce it if you're not breaking the law. He established that no laws were broken, at that time the cyclist was free to go. That doesn't mean he can't stay and chit chat with the cyclist if the cyclist doesn't object. That said, the stop was entirely legal, there was no means for him to know how the vehicle was powered, he has never seen them before and they're not common in the US. And no, it's not an arrest, technically it's a detainment, or Terry stop. Please research Terry v Ohio.

No, it's no legal for you to pass. You're technically considered a road vehicle, you want the same rights, you want people to respect you on the road, you follow the road rules.
@TheFlamingEyeball6 жыл бұрын
Actually (Virginia, US): § 46.2-804. Special regulations applicable on highways laned for traffic. "6. Wherever a highway is marked with double traffic lines consisting of two immediately adjacent solid yellow lines, no vehicle shall be driven to the left of such lines, except (i) when turning left or (ii) in order to pass a pedestrian or a device moved by human power, including a bicycle, skateboard, or foot-scooter, provided such movement can be made safely." It helps to know the LAW, not just your opinion.This is not a "road vehicle" as you claim, it is a human powered vehicle (HPV), although not as well known in the States, it is still a human powered vehicle as is legal to operate in Virginia (and most other states) without a license, and without hassle. Most states and countries have 'extra' laws concerning HPVs and you have to read more than just the motor part of vehicle laws to know what you are talking about.

Still, I am not okay with the police pulling you over because they he was curious, essentially. The problem is that they don't educate themselves once one cop is given the explanation. I have been stopped time and time again by the same department. To prevent it happening again, I went to the main departments of each city in which I ride to educate them about my exotic machine, (a Catrike 700), and answer any questions they might have. I also talked with patrol supervisors to e-mail the patrol officers en masse, that everyone might be informed at the same time. Our time is important, too.

I feel this thing is way wider than a regular bicycle, you are basically a public nuisance and even possibly a danger by forcing other cars to take so wide when they overtake you... you need to understand that... i know you think you are right by law and you like that, but you drive an exception vehicle that falls into a category. And even if you say you are as wide as a regular bicycle, i am not sure this is right, is seems a lot wider... being allowed to be there doesn't mean it's a good idea for you to be there.. or, even if it's the same width, it doesn't allow you to go as close to the right... thats my opinion. If i were making the laws those would be kept out of the streets for safety issue. Anyways, i hope nothing bad happens. I just think bicycle and car sharing of the road being already problematic, your vehicle, as nice as it is, is not making it easier... this cop pulled you over for a common sense and logical reason when seeing how the cars around you behaved, he just could'nt do anything because you are within the law.
@TheMetalButcher6 жыл бұрын

@LaKoeps6 жыл бұрын
Lindsey Star like mentioned before this thing is barely as wide as the handle bars on a mountainbike. And if the people in cars had paid attention when learning the rules and regulations they would already know to expect slower moving vehicles on this road. Ignorance is not an excuse.

Of course you feel it's wider, because on normal bike videos you'll only see a front wheel and a steer. Here you see the nose of the Quest and with the wide angled camera this thing seems huge! You might be pleased with the speeds these puppies can develop. Here's a video abroad from a guy who rides 30 mph on the flat and 54 mph on a downhill slope. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJazg4SljN6AsJY
