Amazing, thanks for doing this. I’d seen the names but didn’t know exactly which some bits were. Wonderful to see it all from before they added the wild/wiggly arm move in London a few years ago.

@@stuartcampbell912 the time stamps are for this clip, it's not possible to hit the same seconds for ANY show on different evenings let alone another production. The filmed version of 1998 has many cuts on top of that. The choreo is always the same, to know what section they are dancing you just need to compare the steps. The order is always the same. The timing differs.

Watching through a second time tracking the two of them (not a hardship, they're two of my favorites and they're both always doing something interesting or adorable), and there are a lot of little moments where choreography leads to little things. During the step look part they seem to pair off, before Tugger comes over and in this case give him the little under chin scratch. That moment continues, and it looks like Tugger is going to go sit next to him but I think Jemima slips in the spot instead, so he stands over the girls and Mistoffelees. When Tugger moves away, suddenly it's gotta go show off time, and when bombalurina interrupts they do that sashay walk over to where Tugger is. Who then heads over to start his own show off segment (and coincidentally, not watch Bombalurina). Mistoffelees noting Tugger dancing with Bombalurina, and stands the second they start, and once the lifts start suddenly here he and (I think thats Bill Bailey?) come through right in front of them. He and Tugger always seem to be in opposite dance groups, even if that means Mistoffelees is dancing with the girls, which leads it to looking like he's dancing in front of Tugger in particular multiple times, including having his butt stuck out if not shaking it at Tugger's direction at least. He's also very notably alone during any time cats pair off, especially during the paux de dur. During cartwheels, Mistoffelees and Alonzo stop and present to Deuteronomy, happens to be Tugger's hanging out there too, and he seems to have a direct reaction when the two have their legs spread open when on their backs. That extra sequence means Mistoffelees isn't in the boys step, which Tugger doesn't join either, he seems to be making his way along the back in Mistoffelees direction before getting distracted and stopped to dance, Mistoffelees heading that way as well but seems to stop and hesitate right when Tugger and I can't tell who dance. Tugger goes back to the car, and Mistoffelees follows, and seems like he's going up to him till Deuteronomy stops him by grabbing his arm and telling him to go spin, which Tugger also watches. During hovers it looks like he's running straight for Tugger, before Tugger runs back to the car. Those are all just choreography coincidences more than anything, where skills are better used, getting to position for the next movement, ect, rather than active and intentional character choices (except the chin thing), but it's interesting how much can be read into with just those small moments.

If there’s no Tuggoffelees in Cats 2019, the movie is officially more wack than it already is! I hate that it looks like they’re making Victoria and Misto a couple, moreso because I’ve always seen them as twins or brother and sister ever since a little kid experiencing Cats for the first time. They have little interaction, and the interaction they have together isn’t intimate or romatic - looking at all, at least in my eyes. Munkustrap and Demeter, and Tugger and Misto are the two most couple - looking cats in the musical. Lol, even the actors of Tugger and Misto from the 2016 revival admitted that do look like they’re more than just friends (also they collect ship fanart of them so that’s that, as well)!

The Princess Louise is a pub near the New London theatre (where Cats started in 1981) rumour has it the step (7.37) was made up in the pub one night after rehearsals.
@chrissi28107 жыл бұрын
According to Gillian Lynne, she was sitting in a car with her assistant choreographer Lindsay Dolan. When that step came into her mind she immediately told the driver to stop so that she could teach them the step. That was near the pub called Princess Louise.

Ironically, the first line of T.S. Eliot's unpublished poem "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" (which the Prologue of Cats is based on) is "I was lunching one day at the Princess Louise".

_OH_ there were some interesting parings in the 'Sensual' and 'White Cat Lift'. I definitely at least Jemima and Munkustrap, and what looked like Pouncival and Jennyanydots (though I'm not _too_ sure)

It rather looks like Pouncival and Jellylorum but the picture is too blurry and I don't remember it from the time when I saw that production 6 years ago.
@whitmerule27534 жыл бұрын
Munk/Jemima definitely, and Tumble/Demeteter on the left (with him doing the handstands) - though Demeter starts out with Cassandra! To go around the circle: Pounce is at the very front with Mistoffelees, but does get some cuddles with Jellylorum while Mistoffelees is walking around on his hands. Jellylorum is next to Pouncival, and nuzzles Alonzo a bit, who also cuddles Electra on his other side. Then you've got Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer who are, of course, mostly wrapped up in each other; then Jemima, who is joined by Munkustrap once he deigns to come down from the tyre and participate. Then Bomba and Tugger; then Cassandra/Demeter and Tumble/Skimble, until Skimble moves in to help with the end of the lift, and Demeter and Tumblebrutus pair up instead. And finally, Tantomile and Coricopat, seeing only each other; and back to Mistoffelees.

Well, that’s in large because they aren’t cats. They are humans. You can’t choreograph two hours of theatre purely on the the reality of what cats do. Theatre is about taking the truth of something and elevating into art. You have the essence of what it is to be cat and you build on it. The stretching, the prowling, the acrobats, the ferocity, the sexuality. You take all those things and mould them onto the human body to express the essence of what is feline. That’s theatre, and more specifically that’s dance. No soldier in a ballet moves exactly as a real life soldier, no folk dance is truly what is done in the provinces, milkmaid don’t generally leap through the air, orphans dong normally take the streets with vendors back flipping through the crowds, the guests at Ascotte don’t pose in such angular positions. Dance is an exaggeration. No audience member wants to buy a hundred dollar ticket to see your new version of cats with realistic cat choreography
