Have you seen Logan's Run from 1976? Part of it is set in a ruined, overgrown Washington D.C. (with cats!). It stars Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and the great Peter Ustinov. It holds up well today and is worth a watch. It also has a cool '70s sci-fi aesthetic.

@@nyxandchill It's brilliant Nix! - Do a reaction video! The premise is that there is a futuristic society run by an AI - set in a domed city (probably after a nuclear war many decades ago) All citizens must report for "regeneration" when they reach 30 years old ... it's basically an execution presented as eternal life "Logan" is a police officer who must shoot those that have got wise to this brainwashing, and don't want to die (they call them 'runners') ... until the implant on his own hand changes colour, because he's turned 30! ... and he doesn't want to die ... he runs ... Michael York plays the main character, and Jennifer Agutter and Peter Ustinov are also key roles It's very good

I'm about halfway through the filming now and I can say it continues to be very intriguing!! I really enjoyed researching dystopias for my dissertation, there's not much so far for video games so it was a very fun project 😁 if you have some time, I highly recommend searching for critical dystopias in video games on google scholar - there's a few solid papers so far!!

Speaking of cyberpunk dystopias and the Walled City: in Shadowrun Hong Kong a few missions take place in there because in the shadowrun setting they rebuild it (or it was never demolished, not sure).

KZbinrs (and viewers) try not make noises when cat does a cute in Stray (Challange: impossible) I wonder if the devs came up with the protagonist or the setting first. Because either way, seeing a post-apocalypse dystopia from a non-human perspective is actually kinda interesting.
@nyxandchill
@nyxandchill Ай бұрын
Real 😭 I think it mentions in the wiki that they were really intrigued by the walled city, and as cat owners, felt it'd be interesting as a cats playground!! And then the rest of the story formed from there
@JawadBhuiyan

@nyxandchill Very smart choice honestly. 1) We get a cat game 2) The neutral perspective of an animal just trying to survive amplifies the dystopian horror I feel

As I voted for Stray I'm happy to see this :) So without knowing anything about this game (except that you play as a cat in a dystopian future city) I kinda have a theory after this first episode: What if the humans transfered their minds/souls into these robots/machine bodies over time. Maybe to be able to survive some kind of plague/pandemic that would have killed them otherwise. Perhaps those glowy creatures are the source of that? What is also interesting, is that the cats seem to have a certain importance in this world. Why would a (human) scientist develop this backpack-thing for a 'quadruped' specificly? Maybe the cats were immune to whatever threatened this world.. ? 🤔 Needless to say, I am looking forward to see how this will continue.
@nyxandchill
@nyxandchill Ай бұрын
The scientist creating something specifically for a quadrupedal was really intriguing to me too!! It might have been put in there just as a "reason", but I hope they come back to it later in the came with a proper reason behind it 🤞🏻 I'm interested to see your theories as the playthrough continues!!

This was quite interesting! I read the Wikipedia entry for Kowloon Walled City and that was interesting. I looked at the photos and thought: well I can see where they got the inspiration for Cyberpunk 2077 Nightcity from! About cats, we've got an old ginger cat too. He's about 15 or 16 years old now. He looks very similar to the ginger cat in the game! (Since he's getting on a bit with age we now also have 3 young cats to extend the cat-family... Yes we're a cat household too!) I think you said "Critical Dystopias" at the beginning of the video? What is a "Critical Dystopia"? I'm also curious if you would consider the world of the Witcher 3, especially Velen, a dystopia? (Not a modern dystopia obviously, but a medieval!)
@nyxandchill
@nyxandchill Ай бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed!! Kowloon Walled City is so interesting, both the origins and the more modern history before it was destroyed. I need to do a deepdive at some point Please give all four of your cats head scritches for me 🥺 one of my big life goals is to adopt a cat or three, I love them so much Yess critical dystopias!! Honestly I should go in depth in one of the Stray videos, its a little complex and heavily debated, but in a nutshell its a dystopia that pushes the reader/viewer/player/etc to think critically about the narrative, and in turn their own situation! I'm not sure I'd class Witcher 3 as dystopian - a dystopia is usually a projection of our society into the future! I think Witcher is more historical influence in an alternate fantasy setting? I'll have to think about it!

Not just 2077, all these kind of megablocks in the cyberpunk genre are inspired by Kowloon.

When you brought up the Kowloon walled city my eyes went wide with a sudden realization... Ever heard of the manga / anime Black Blood Brothers? The following is from the Wikipedia page on the series- read no further if you wish to avoid any information and would rather go in blind... ; . . . . . "During a war called the Hong Kong Crusade, an Old Blood vampire, Jiro Mochizuki, a.k.a. the Silver Blade (Gintō), fought and defeated the Kowloon king and most of the Kowloon Children. Ten years later, Jiro heads to Hong Kong with his younger brother, Kotaro Mochizuki, in hopes of reaching The Special Zone, a thriving secret city where Vampires live-(which is separate from the human civilized parts of the city). They soon realize that a plan to infiltrate the Special Zone is being hatched by the Kowloon Children survivors. As they travel to The Special Zone, Jiro encounters enemies from the past and new threats that may endanger the safety of the Special Zone including the citizens. Kotaro's abduction, by one of the Kowloon Children, thrusts him even further into the battle. Along the way, he meets a human girl named Mimiko." According to both the English and Japanese versions of the anime Kowloon is pronounced ku-lon.

I think Stray is in the subgenre of dystopias which are meant to be comforting rather than meant to give a warning by being terrifying, as the older ones always were. Comforting tales of survivable apocalypses where niceness continues afterward seem to be popular with advertisers and conservatives (?) who don't want any radical action to stop the oncoming dangers in real life, especially not centrally-organised, state-led crisis efforts of the kind that would be necessary and which cannot be otherwise achieved. I've probably gone on about this before so I apologise for repetition. There's that saying about "people find it easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism," but there's also a tendency among those for whom our current social-economic dystopia is their utopia, to actively prefer the end of the world to the end of capitalism and any substantial redistribution of wealth from themselves, for any purpose no matter how urgent. Oligarchs who like to buy up major media operations, including film studios and games developers.

@nyxandchill 23 күн бұрын
On a surface level I'd agree with you, especially as I've seen it called "hopepunk", but I think there's some interesting stuff later in the game that arguably is a commentary on certain things. I'd like to do a whole deepdive on the game to disect it properly though!! Dystopias are a complicated one simply because there's so many ways to look at them, as well as a whole bunch of subgenres. Critical dystopias tend to include a utopian enclave for the character to strive towards, as instead of being specifically apocalyptic situations, they intend to show us that dystopia is now, and we need to work our way out of it. It's another video I'd love to do so I can go fully into detail. I might include it in Detroit: Become Human as I'm very curious about that one! Also - really appreciated you sending me that reel about Mark Fisher's book a while back. Hopefully I'll have time to read it one day 🤞🏻
