How about… if you have pet cats spay them and keep them indoors. @@AxisChurchDevotee birds will “disappear” during the breeding season when they become more secretive. Usually they come back during the winter when they are less alert and looking for food. Birds also learn to avoid areas that they know cats visit regularly. Personally birds where I live seem to doing better with cats about. The cats are controlling all the non-native squirrels and rats which would be destroying all the birds nest. Just last year I saw an invasive eastern gray squirrel devouring a nest of Eurasian blackbirds whilst the adults looked helpless. The biggest threats I’ve seen are diseases like trichomonosis which has killed all the green finches and avian influenza as well as people killing all the insects that many native birds feed on
@slitheringswamp53522 жыл бұрын
Feral/Outdoor Cats have an edge on both native predators and even other invasive predators because they are pets. People feed them, so the cats can establish greater population densities than they otherwise would. And because they are cute, people hate to limit or even manage their populations. This is even more frustrating because cats were bred to kill small animals, even when not hungry. Many birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other small mammals are threatened (along with the other living things that depend on them in the web of life) because they are losing a popularity contest. If you have an outdoor cat please keep it inside. Beyond the problems it causes for wildlife, It's safer from parasites, illnesses, catnappers, and cars. AND it doesn't breed with a stray and contribute to the overabundance of feral cats without homes.

So your best thing to do is easy; keep your pets indoors, spay and neuter the pet, and DON'T let them roam outside. It stills sickens me that there are still people who cluelessly let their pets outside unsupervised, it's like a toddler going outside with no parents watching it. Not all feral cat situations are the same. In places lacking a native cat species or something like it, major damage can occur. Cats domesticated themselves in the first place by protecting our grain from pests. Putting lots of seeds into an area will essentially lure cats in via prey items in. Cats can't distinguish corn in a barn meant for human consumption from bird seed from a feeder. They assume its ours & its their job to kill anything stealing it. The Egyptians bred them that way. The bird feeders create the prey density that justifies sustained predation. So, keep cats inside & no bird feeders that allow seed to fall to the ground. The cats are far more interested in bugs & mice then birds. I work in a conservation zone with feral cats & watch them. They nearly always, 95% of the time, eat bugs, then mice or the occasional frog during rain storms & breeding seasons. Bird feeders attract vermin too.

I feed the birds every day and give them water and then when my cats go outside the birds fly into the trees and then fly back down when the cats go inside. Cats kill 2 billion birds a year and are responsible for the extinction for 63 species of mammals, bird, and lizard
@theotheseaeagle Жыл бұрын
Exactly. The thing I’ve noticed is the people who whinge and complain about outdoor cats are usually Americans from the cities. They wonder why there’s no birds around them and instead of blame it on cats instead of the towers of concrete around them. Birds are doing fine, and removing cats would probably be *more* catastrophic as it would lead to massive increases in nest raising species. The biggest threat to birds now is climate change and diseases

@@Why79-dx4rf I’m assuming you come from the city, again not your fault you haven’t had the opportunity to actually work with animals (as I have been doing my entire life). Tell me this? How many bird boxes have you created? How many native trees have you planted to actually help these animals you seem so concerned about? How many endangered species have you saved from dying gruelling deaths? Let me guess, you haven’t done anything. Instead of complaining, at least actually *DO* something to help these species. If cats were such a threat, I’d be advocating for them to be kept indoors, yet they aren’t that big of a threat. Maybe if you happen to live in Australia or New Zealand with endemic species which have no natural defences against mammalian predators, then yes keep them indoors, but stop forcing your city beliefs onto people who actually work with birds as well as cats
@theotheseaeagle Жыл бұрын
@@Why79-dx4rf cats *do* control rodents. Look what happened in Australia, they eradicated all the cats without removing all the invasive rats and mice first, what happened? They had a mouse plague which cost farmers hundreds of billions of pounds worth in agricultural damages and ironically caused more upset to the local ecosystem then the cats were actually causing. Less than a few years ago I saw an invasive North American grey squirrel tearing into a nest of young blackbirds, now I haven’t seen any squirrels around for awhile? Why? Because the cats were controlling them. Same for the highly invasive brown rat. I had them eating chicken feed and raiding the nests of native birds. Now guess what? Ever since getting cats I haven’t seen a big one around for ages (apart from the ones my cats have killed). I’ve seen native rodents have a resurgence too as they are no longer being eaten alive by rats and grey squirrels

America ALREADY has native cat species, namely the bobcat, cougar & lynx, & they're bigger & stronger then domestic cats. While cats might have some impact, they're not alien to north America & aren't on top of the food chain. Native cats & canines can even eat domestic cats, a great reason to keep your cats indoors!!

Most cats do not hunt birds--a thing with superior eyesight and wings. Sad to see an expert simply repeating rumour based on mere statistics, without stopping to think this through. Many, many small species of wild cats have existed since the dawn of mammals, and so have populations of birds. Perhaps the presence of small predators is what prompted the evolution of wings. Domestic cats belong wherever there are humans, and are helpful. The most invasive species must be humans, followed by cows because of the way humans view them. If cats ate billions of birds every year...we wouldn't have any birds. Birds are massive carriers of many diseases; cats harm no one who treats them with respect. Island bird populations eventually adapt: think of Britain, Japan, Cyprus.
@theotheseaeagle Жыл бұрын
Yep, the birds here in Britain have coexisted with felines for almost their entire existence. Removing cats would just cause booms in the populations of nest raiders like rats and grey squirrels which do much worse to local bird populations. Just last year I heard a black bird screaming and saw an invasive grey squirrel devouring a nest full of nestlings whilst the parents chattered and squealed around it. The people which hate cats (mostly Americans from the cities which don’t understand what they are actually talking about) would be the first to complain about rat and mouse infestations trust me

On the islands and in Australia cats are an invasive species and should be removed, but on the mainland, the situation is complicated and I think they can be part of the urban ecosystem, keep calm and don't be biased by the media There are many cats in Eurasia and North America, and there are also many animals with similar hunting patterns and ecological niches to stray cats. For hunted animals, there is little difference between stray cats and other animals with similar ecological niches. Therefore, in Eurasia and North America, stray cats are more competitive with animals with similar ecological niches, rather than affecting the hunted animal population. The whole ecosystem is still stable, as long as humans don't overcare and discard cats in large numbers, nature will balance everything out, what do you think
