My 4 year old niece's whiskers I drew on her with eyeliner for Halloween looked better than the Cats movie. Even after she accidentally smeared them with her mittens. I’m an old school cats fan. Saw it on broadways when it was 15 years into it’s run. It doesn’t have a story. It’s for people who enjoy singing and dancing. That’s it. The lyrics are based on poetry by T.S. Elliot, and it can be clever but not meant to be serious. The original performances were brilliant, even if you don’t like the material, and that’s what made the show a hit. People singing and dancing well, all while dressed as cats. The oddity of it made it a must see for tourists, hence the long run. That said, this movie should have never been made. Cats should not be a movie. It’s a monstrosity and a crime against humanity.

I'm really belated on this, but Sideways (a musical person on YT) had a really interesting take on this. He said, "CATS [the stage production] is successful because it's 90% spectacle and lycra. But if you pay attention, there's actually a story... it's just being told backwards from the point of view of the antagonists. This is what it would look like if you spent an entire Mario game inside Bowser's Castle. Things would be really repetitive and weird, right up until the last 15 minutes, when all the action happened." The story is this: Grizabella was kicked out of the Jellicle cats, long ago, for some unknown reason. She's really lonely, desperate to be accepted back into the Jellicle cats and just be touched again. The younger cats are curious about her and wanting to touch her and find out about her, but the older cats always stop them and hiss at her to go away. She sings Memory in a desperate attempt to get back into the group. Old Deuteronomy hears her and wants to accept her, but he can't without the acceptance of the rest of the group. Jemima hears this and sings to the tune of memory, signalling to the audience that Grizabella would be perfect for the Heavyside Lair. Then, in the second act, after a lot of stuff, Grizabella comes back, is rejected again, sings Memory again in a desperate attempt to get the others to accept her, and a RANDOM CAT (named Victoria) goes to touch her... and this time, nobody stops her! Therefore, the entire group accepts her again. She's happy now, and then Old Deuteronomy selects her to be reborn. That's the story amid all the spectacle. I haven't seen the movie (and don't particularly intend to), but I kind of get the impression that this all went over Hooper's head?

Sadly the “plot” of this movie version is more than the stage play ever had. The stage play was all introduce a new cat and sing and dance repeat . It was a huge hit due to the dancing and the fact some of the cats came out of the audience and the audience got some interaction like blue man group .

@ElaMongrella3 жыл бұрын
Not sure about each stage performance, but the 1998 DVD version did show a plot, if you pay attention to background details during the songs. Grizabella always being shunned, each time she shows up, before becoming the chosen one is the main plot, but there is also the side plot, of Mistoffelees, embarrassing himself at the beginning of Jennyanydots' song, and being teased about it by the kittens, and then having his performance during the moon dance cut off by Bombalurina later, until Rum Tum Tugger carries her away, so he can finish, and later finally getting the admiration and respect he deserves (after Rum Tum Tugger asks the others not to scoff, but give him a chance), after saving Deuteronomy.

Cats is 2+ hours of cats singing song after song after song after song about what sort of cats they are. They do so because they're trying to impress a mangy old cat called Old Deuteronomy, who gets to pick which one of them mercifully gets put down at the end. Unfortunately, virtually every song is totally forgettable, except "Memory," which can be pleasant enough if performed well and gag-inducing if the singer tearfully blubs their way through it.

About the sexuality of the play: T. S. Eliot actually turned down Disney, when they asked for the rights to the poems, because he didn't want child friendly, cutesy kitty cats. Disney then made Aristocats instead. When Webber asked Eliot's widow for the rights, she told him about that, and Webber said "oh, I was thinking more along the line of Hot Gossip" (a pretty raunchy stage show at the time), and Mrs. Eliot said "oh, yes, I think he would've liked that" and gave Webber the rights.

I believe most of the music would be new for the movie not taken from the play since there is a new story line.

Was the dancing in the old Cats risqué? I don't remember much from it, because I was a kid at the time. I just remember thinking it was boring.

@@MsSphinx91 I was a kid as well. I'm basing it off of what Martin and Corey are saying since they saw it and they did show a clip. Looking at the clip seemed a little sexual...but the dancing also looked very 80s style and the Cats on Broadway today doesn't look the same at all. I guess a more modern take. (I was slightly disappointed me and my mom saw it together and I wondered why it looked like a different show even from the commercials in the 90s. )

I'm a huuuge fan of the musical. I watched the video version about a million times in highschoo. This is... weird but I'm still going to see it.

"Is there a thread to any of this?" is pretty much what I asked my mom years ago when I watched Cats the play on PBS, not all of it, just kept flipping back and forth between channels. She told me no. I think once the novelty of seeing people in cat costumes wore off I got bored with it. I feel like this movie would do the same for me, but I'd still be willing to rent it.

They’re all Jellicle cats, and this is the Jellicle Ball where they compete to be chosen by Old Deuteronomy so they can go to the Heaviside Layer and be reincarnated into their best selves.

Corey is totally right about everything, but that's why i like it. I LOVED this movie. I have loved the musical all my life, but you GOTTA go into it knowing that it is some of the most absurd bullshit of all time. THAT'S when you get to have a good time.

Judi Dench isn't someone we think of as a singer today but 40 some years ago she was, if memory serves, the lead (Sally Bowles) the in London production of Caberet

I walked out of the cinema and passed a guy who just saw Cats! ‘Everything was bad, absolutely everything’, he said to a friend. I don’t mind the golden fangs, 2 cats wearing sneakers, songs being cut short, Rebel Wilson spreading her legs, all the bad characters or hooker being played by black people, the bad CGI that makes feet disappear in the floor…, all the sickled feet, the flexed feet or bent knees when they should be straight, not 1 grand jeté at 180 degrees… OK, I DO MIND!! I understand they wanted to create a ‘up to date’ version of this dance musical but pointing feet and straightening legs will NEVER go out of style. And why show the real dancing halfway through the musical? Up until then you will see a lot of close ups and isolations (leg, arm, arm, head) or slow motion jumps. Director Tom Hooper doesn’t know how to shoot dance. Now, this ‘star’ cast is in search for a star. Rebel Wilson can’t sing and act this part, James Cordon plays James Cordon, Jason Derulo was supposed to play a tough guy but he chose to run around like a riffing Christina Aguilera, Judi Dench can’t sing this part and has to change keys to make it work, Taylor Swift can’t act, Francesca Hayward has a very small and pitchy voice and sounds like she just started voice classes. Jennifer Hudson, who was supposed to play the lead, can’t really act and only has one voice: it’s loud. Now, thank God for Ian McKellen. He was wonderful in his version of Gus. In this supporting role he is the true star of the movie. Director Tom Hooper must be proud to fuck up one of the longest running Broadway shows.

CATS is probably the best movie that can be adapted from the 1981 sung-through musical, all things considered. Don't get me wrong; I like it a lot... as a live show, not as a play with songs. There are musicals that have turned out great despite prioritizing the song score over the book/script. In this case, technical aspects like costume design were also prioritized over it. There was a recurring gag in THE NANNY where people were shocked at how the title character's boss turned down the opportunity to be one of the producers. His reason was that the pitch didn't sound convincing. Well... He was kind of right. There's almost no progression, because almost every musical number is about introducing each member of the feline tribe Jellicle. Screenwriters Tom Hooper (who's also the director) and Lee Hall are clearly aware of this and they try to make everything feel more cinematic by emphasizing certain conflicts/arcs and by adding spoken dialogue. I wasn't as bored as I feared, but it's still not an entertaining experience. Since the score is the same, I couldn't shake that feeling of constantly being bounced around between characters and, by the end, I didn't feel like I had gotten to know any of them. In fact, what's the point in performing an "I Am" song when we've already seen the character around for a while? There's been a lot of criticism towards the CG costumes. I usually don't mind that kind of thing as long as the characterization is consistent enough to make me forget that I'm watching something that's not real. Well... No, it's not consistent. Some of them wear clothes and shoes. If they feel that need, shouldn't all of them do that? If they've evolved enough to feel that need and to have a clear separation between hands and feet, why they do still drink milk by licking it? Sometimes, the actors move and gesture like cats. Sometimes, they move and gesture like humans. Sometimes, they move and gesture like other animals. Sometimes, they display emotions, rational thoughts and distinct personality traits. Sometimes, they react by instinct. Sometimes--You get the idea. I'm nitpicking like this because them communicating through words is supposed to be only for the audience's benefit. They're supposed to be normal cats in-universe. Well, they meow, hiss and purr, which defeats the purpose of giving them the ability to speak and sing. The protagonist is Victoria and it's a thankless role. Not just because she's the only one without an extravagant name, but also because she's an audience surrogate who mainly exists to react with doe (or cat?) eyes at what everyone else does. That makes me admire Francesca Hayward's performance even more. I say "even more" because I was already touched by all the emotions she conveyed. Not just with her face and her voice but also her body language. As a matter of fact, my favorite scene is right after the beginning, when she dances without singing. I later read that she's a trained ballerina, and I wasn't surprised. Jennifer Hudson's performance is good too. I have no idea what Ian McKellen is doing. I felt moved during the last portion of the number MR. MISTOFFELEES, but the other portions feel devoid of energy compared to the stage show's rendition of the song. There's a scene where Jennyanydots (the laziest Jellicle) grabs an invisible zipper and reveals that what we thought was her body was a costume and that she was hiding a dress underneath. What is this?! While there are other moments of humor, the tone is relatively serious, so why do a LOONEY TUNES routine all of the sudden?! 4/10
