Spider-man (2002) is Dated in a Lot of Areas but I still had a Great time rewatchin it. Honestly even w/ Flaws I still personally enjoyed it. For me I give it a FULL PRICE still, Love Willem Dafoe, Love Jk Simmons, Love Tobey and Damn Mary Jane was foine. I remember back in the 5th grade me & several friends prepped SO MUCH for this film cuz we knew it be packed & wanted the best seats & we had to rush our parents like "WE CANT BE Late" GoodTimes & Im SO Grateful Majority of theaters guarantee u assigned seats w/ Prebuy tickets These Days lol

This was the best theater going experience I’ve had as an adult. Had been waiting on Spider-Man, ever since Cannon Films had the rights. After +10 years of development hell, it finally came out. Was in my mid 20’s when I saw this, opening night. There were so many moments where I forgot I was grown and reverted back to being 8. Didn’t matter how jam packed the theater was. Then the credits came on after that final swinging sequence. A straight up standing ovation from everyone there. That’s when I realized we’d all gone back to being kids again. That was one amazing, spectacular and sensational movie going experience.

While it is kind of an annoying thing to see young adults portraying teenagers, it's definitely not as bad when the extras/background characters/students are also portrayed by young adults. At least that helps maintain the illusion. It's when you have younger kids playing the background/surrounding students that make it glaringly obvious (ie. "The Boy Next Door" with J.Lo).... It was okay here. But the guy playing the teacher at the field trip barely looked older than the so-called "kids", so that was tough lol.

I was nine years old when the very first Spider-Man film was released. It was the first PG-13 film I ever saw, and it's one of my favorite movie-going experiences to see my childhood hero on the big screen. Can't believe that was 20 years ago.

Rewatched it leading up to No Way Home, still mostly holds up. Yeah the dated CGI and corny lines here and there, but I think the strengths of this movie and the 2nd one too is that while they’re fun superhero movies, they’re also great emotional drama between the characters that helps elevate the movie from being just a goofy comic book movie. Love Tobey as this character, memes aside. I actually like Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, I get it the damsel in distress thing can get annoying, but I think she’s a much more three dimensional character than people give her credit for, plus the iconic upside down kiss. Willem Dafoe is over the top, but in the best way possible. And J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson is the GOAT. I really like the Tom Holland movies and I’m not one of those Raimi fanboys who always puts them down, they’re different interpretations of the character while still keeping the essence of what we love about him, but I do hold the first 2 Raimi films near to my heart. They may be cheesy, but that’s part of the charm of them.

This film will always have a special place in my heart, as it was the first comic book film I saw in the theatre (saw it with my grandmother though she’s sadly no longer here died in 2008). I view this film the same way I do movies like "Jurassic Park" or "Back to the Future". There's some sort of universal, timeless quality to it. It's memorable, schmaltzy and charming, but as you mentioned in your review there's a lot of character work that elevates it above your typical superhero movie. This is one of the handful of superhero flicks where I can honestly say I feel it's a legitimate "classic" movie.

Well, they said in the review that there are many things that supposedly didn't age well. So I'm not sure if "timeless" is the right word. But it's a classic in the same way that Richard Donner's Superman & Tim Burton's Batman were.

@@jp3813 I think outside of the Macy Gray bit and some of the special effects the movie aged perfectly fine. And I still would say it’s timeless. I think people just feel insecure sometimes when these movies have campy or sillier bits. Marvel in the present has made a big habit of being self-deprecating and irony poisoned. But like, speaking to people who typically aren’t into these types of movies, by and large this has a very broad appeal. All the “it hasn’t aged well” stuff today will be the stuff it’s remembered fondly for tomorrow.

I would love to know what about the way Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane reminded you of the comics version? Her character had no real direction. I don't think they ever figured out who she is but she definitely wasn't what the comics gave us. Mary Jane in the books is a strong willed woman who is confident.

Yo I grew up on this being my first Superhero movie in theaters at the age of 4 and growing up with both the movie and the 90’s cartoon together, Sam Raimi alone made me fall in love with Spider-Man deeply and got me into drawing apart from my Pops getting me into drawing and coloring because the first thing I ever drew was Spider-Man as a 4 year old after watching Spider-Man 1, now as a professional artist I can definitely salute Sam and Tobey for getting me deep into the comic book art world.

Came out when I was 17, 😍 it. But as I got older, parts of it have aged poorly, Maguire and Dunst were a mixed 💼 for me (Maguire also being pretty much the Jared Leto of his day kinda soured me a bit, though I hear he’s mellowed out over time). But so many Iconic shots, memorable 🤪 lines, Willem FUCKING Dafoe sans the costume, and of course Bruce Campbell. Oh and it brought me two of my favorite Superhero games 🥹…back then anyway 😝

@@thoomolong if they were standalone, it wouldn't be a shared universe. And to be clear, that's their model, I'm not even mad at it. And even the Raimi movies aren't standalone overall. The events of Spider-Man 2 are set up by the events of 1. And so on and so forth. Just saying it was nice to revisit something, as the DT crew says here, quaint.

I’ll give Joe Manganiello this. He might look old for a high school senior, but he certainly looks like a great live-action Flash Thompson. He looks like the big, athletic quarterback that could kick anyone’s ass. Not like with Chris Zylka in Amazing Spider-Man, where you can easily imagine Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker giving him a grade A whooping XD

Let's not forget arguably the best professional wrestler cameo of all time by Macho Man. Only Hulk Hogan's "Thunderlips" in Rocky III comes close. Edit: I'm glad they mentioned it in passing.

You guys are 8 days late with this video! The movie officially turned 20 last Tuesday This movie is what got everything started for me: 2002 I was 12 years old Resident Evil was the 1st dvd purchase I ever got and I found that first trailer of this movie on it Living at my first house I used my moms computer and stumbled upon a website; epic music playing in the background along with some still shots in a montage of a young boy after getting bit by a radioactive spider on a class trip gained superpowers and became an iconic hero This was Spider-Man and the idea of seeing one of the most popular comic book characters on screen was exciting! I watched the 90s cartoon, had several action figures, collected some comics but this movie is what really got me into becoming a die hard movie buff for life Since then I started collecting merchandise from figures to shirts to magazines to soundtracks to video games to posters to newspaper articles etc. Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, Kristen Dunst, and James Franco changed everything setting the bar for all comic book filmmaking The weekend of May 3rd, 2002 turned everything around for me and Spider-Man is still my #1 superhero of all time This is still the best movie ever made and still holds up 20 years later My dad was so pleased watching it too from the cast to the acting to the action to the story to the music We saw it in theaters twice, too I was happy to learn it ruled the 2002 box office and I played the movie tie in video game non stop on my PS2 Yes it’s corny in spots and Green Goblin’s costume looks dumb by today’s standards but Raimi manages to successfully adapt a big blockbuster such as this like no other with a terrific cast, a fun tone, great energy, looking very colorful, and using Peter’s transformation as a suitable metaphor for going through puberty into manhood Spider-Man (2002) is the best version to me still to this day and I am thankful it catapulted so much for comic book films next to turning me into a die hard movie fanatic BEST MOVIE EVER made to this day

I saw it again last December. I saw them all again with my parents so they wouldn't be completely lost during No Way Home. My conclusion with this movie is I still like it a ton I remember seeing it the summer before I entered 2nd grade I remember drinking the biggest Sprite of my life and my mom not letting me go to pee until she couldn't take my whining. And then she covered my eyes when the goblin died I didn't see the full scene until DVD. That being said it was probably nostalgia fueling me but I still like this film a lot and Spider-Man 2 I still say it's a hands down masterpiece.

I was 8 when this movie came out and it was the second superhero movie I saw after X-Men but this one was definitely my favorite. I saw it with my dad, who’s a HUGE Spider-Man fan and knows everything about his lore. Also, as New Yorkers, we were able to recognize a lot of different landmarks and places. Post 9/11 that “You mess with him, you mess with NEW YAWK. You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!” was incredibly poignant. 20 years later, though well intentioned, it comes off as a little corny lol
