It was interesting to see a "bird's eye" view of the stage since this allows you to see all of the "Jellicle Ball" choreography (even if you can't see the dancers very well) whereas the video version centers on one individual dancer or group of dancers at a time.

Yea, Something the movie really missed and this version is better at is that dancing is most interesting to the brain when it seels many individuals acting like a single unit. It activates a variety of parts of the brain that try to understand why these things that are not the same thing are behaving like they are. That is why we enjoy watching dancing. So when you focus in small groups or individuals the brain goes 'so what' .

Admetus would also be played by Richard Armitage if he played Macavity, because whoever plays Macavity is Admetus throughout act 1 and most of act 2 apart from the Macavity scene, where Admetus isn't seen onstage!

Did this version not have the rotating stage? I distinctly remember the version I saw had a rotating stage...
@ladyjennyanytime51954 жыл бұрын
yep this is the same stage, the new London. it only moved during the overture though.
@zippydebrain4 жыл бұрын
@@ladyjennyanytime5195 It is the same set on a different stage. They did it while the show was still on in London so I am not exactly sure how that worked out. It may have been an illusion but for some reason I thought when they were running in circles the thing also spun to speed up their movements but that would be dangerous. I did see it once at the new london theater with one of the tubes under the stage for the cats to come out of at my feet. Spectacular place to watch it from.

@@zippydebrain Sorry but this particular set with the moving stage has only appeared at The New London/Gillia Lynne theatre. The only other place i'm aware of where the set,stage and revolve was replicated was the Japanese production that is still playing over there,or was until recently. It definitely didn't move though after the Overture and only the 1st 3/4 rows moved about halfway through the overture when the main "Ecstasy" theme kicks in and the cast would come out with the flashing eyes. The only other West end theatre its played at is the revival in 2014 at The Palladium. Other than that i don't know where else you might have seen it , but this production on the video is definitely at The New London theatre.

@@ladyjennyanytime5195 I did see it in London several times between 1996 and 2002, and I know the seats rotated but my memory, which could have been confused, has the circular part of the stage rotating when they were dancing in circles however that might have been an illusion because they seemed to be moving faster than their feet appeared to be moving. The New London theater as a thrust theater is a perfect venue for the show so it is hard to beat.

@@zippydebrain I think what your thinking of was a lighting effect that was moving in the opposite direction that the cast was moving. I think they used it in the opening number and also the ball, it comes from the little "U.F.O" lighting rig that lifts up during the overture, the lights on it move around in a circle to create the swirling rotating pattern on the stage, which made the stage look like it was moving especially when other lights are flashing and the cast moving the opposite way, its a similiar effect to using strobe lighting I guess. Its all theatrical illusion. :-)

@wickedboyike2 if the rumors are true there will be a London Revival in 2013 I wish the show would come back to New York. The inflateable set the U.S. tour uses in North America doesn't look as good as the set they started out with (which is now only used in S. America & Hawaii)
