I despise musicals in general, but there is something about Cats that is especially heinous. It's insufferable theater kids at their most uninhibited extreme. I'd rather sit through 3 off broadway showings of Hamilton back to back to back than watch what I've seen of Cats ever again.

@@quinnj.9617 Exactly. I would much rather see a bunch of triple threat theatre kids doing ballet moves and reciting T.S. Elliot that listen to black Americans rap about “””””””history”””””””.
@wormwoodcocktail11 ай бұрын
@@dobtoronto Well, I like musicals, so my opinions may not apply to you. As for why I like Cats better than Hamilton… because I like *musicals* that are *musicals.* Hamilton is just a bunch of subpar rapping. The few genuine “musical” songs in the show (ex. Burn) are perfectly fine, even good, but before you get there you have to listen to Lin Manuel Miranda LARP as a rapping slave owner. I’m not opposed to depicting bad people on screen or stage, but it feels a bit silly because this is being presented in conjunction with Manuel Miranda’s view of history. Like, he wants to make Hamilton a sort of populist hero, and he wasn’t. He considered the unwashed masses to be the “great beast”. Tonally, it feels all over the place. You get these attempts at “jokes” (ex. “WHAT IF THEY TAXED WHISKEY INSTEAD OF TEA LOL”), underdeveloped romantic relationships, historical revisionism while also claiming to be historical…. Honestly, it’s been years since I tried giving Hamilton a shot. I haven’t watched the show IRL or online. I attempted to listen to the entire soundtrack because a girl I liked loved the show and I wanted her to like me. I got, like, halfway into the first act before I tapped out. Pussy couldn’t motivate me to move past “HOW DOES A BASTARD, ORPHAN, SON OF A WHORE AND A SCOTSMAN”. The only songs I’ve ever wanted to repeat from that show were, like, King George’s songs about John Adams being gay. Because they were funny. With Cats, I fully get why Nick and others feel that sort of “cringe” feeling. It’s one of those shows where you either go hard or it doesn’t work. You can’t half-ass it, or it turns into an absolute farce. It’s definitely cheesy, silly, and weird. I also think the fact that the original poems were written in England, that Weber is British, etc…. All of this makes it “weird” for Americans. Like, the Gumbie Cat has a “Rule Britannia” instrumental motif. A lot of this stuff is beyond most Americans and their cultural framework. *But,* to give Cats credit where credit is due, it *can* be beautiful. It’s script isn’t by Lin Manuel, but *T.S. Elliot.* That’s actually why I watched it - because I like Elliot a lot. The songs “Old Deuteronomy” or “Gus the Theatre Cat” are emotionally affecting, especially if you’ve ever loved a cat or someone with dementia. I said that the only good Hamilton song was “Burn”, and that was partially because it’s a breakup song about being cheated on and humiliated by your partner. So, like, something that has some sort of emotional resonance. Even when Cats isn’t trying to be serious, it’s funny. Check out it the 90s movie version Nick alludes to. The makeup is absolutely insane. The dance moves these people pull off are bonkers. The chicks who play Victoria and Cassandra cats do insane ballet moves and gymnastics. Mungojerry and Rumpleteazer is a cute song about mischievous cats and the performers have to *do double cartwheels with one another while keeping their voices steady.* That requires genuine talent. High school kids could perform a serviceable adaptation of Hamilton so long as they get the funny powdered wigs. There is basically no way you could stage Cats with teenagers because *the choreography is just too difficult.* If you look at the behind the scenes documentary, you see that, like, all the actors are cut. Like, ottermode. Basically, Hamilton is written by the guy who did the music for a Disney movie. Cats is by one of the most famous (albeit “normie”) Broadway composers and one of history’s greatest poets. Hamilton has a bunch of black people in powdered wigs pretending to be slaveowners, Cats has people doing gymnastics and dancing in ways that ordinary people just *can’t.* It’s like Cirque du Soleil, in a way. There are better musicals. I’m a huge fan of Sondheim. Into the Woods, Assassins, Company, etc. are all masterpieces. Assassins is probably the one fans of Cumtown would like the most - it’s a surrealist story about John Wilkes Booth and other presidential assassins baiting Lee Harvey Oswald into offing Kennedy. It’s hilarious - Booth just screams the N word full volume in the first five minutes of the show. It’s also emotionally affecting. I’d be lying if I said that Wilkes Booth’s “you want somebody to love you” speech didn’t provoke me when I first heard it. The only other musicals I could see Cumfans liking would be Book of Mormon (by the creators of South Park) and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. *TLDR:* I’m gay and I like to get fucked in the ass kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoDGipd-rMhkkNEsi=3AlpzQNUHTJp7rs3

Like it or not, there is such a thing as “gay culture“. And every culture has cool stuff…and also annoying or off-putting things. My people, the Mexicans, make some pretty cool art and Indy movies…but they also park their cars on their lawns and blare really horrible music through their radios on job sites…. Musical theatre-particularly Cats- is simply one of the off-putting things about gay culture. It’s grating and overly flamboyant.
