The cat who thought the food was shit was my favorite one, she just instantly is trying to bury it. And then the cats who literally get offended by the smell like it's some personal attack. That last one definitely was resentful of the person who smelled so bad, the expression killed me 😂

Fun fact to keep in mind: cats don't tolerate the sweet strong scents we humans enjoy, which is why they'll gag at cakes, mints, icecreams, and many other sweet smelling stuff, they were brought up tracking and eating smelly animals, not eating sweet berries and fruits

It's called 'Flehmen response' when they have their mouths open after smelling something. They use an organ in the roof of the mouth called the 'Jacobson's organ' to better smell whatever scent they're presented with. A lot of mammals have been observed doing this.

it's a wrong information because the flehmen response it only happens when felines smell pheromones, this is a reflection of puke, it is very different.

@@personalhealinginfinitaabb7617 I don't know if you've watched the video. There are examples of both the gag reflex and the Flehmen response in it. You'll see the Flehmen response at about 0:35, 1:23, 1:39 and 2:26 (these are obvious but there may be more).

I think by the gagging is a different reflex from the "stink face" response, but cats and many other animals can pick up more information about what they're smelling through opening their mouth. A lot of time it is used for pheromones as that is the main reason the response was integrated into their evolution, but as a modern housecat there's a lot more scents they can explore and learn about. My cats often make that funny faces when they smell something awful like dirty mat/mop, other/strays cat's butt/spray stains...funnily they do keep smelling the source repeatedly, so yeah maybe deep inside they kinda like it. But I very rarely see them gag, happened when they smell something very tangy/sharp like my peppermint oil, durian, cigar, lime, or hot chili paste/wasabi...and they most probably turn away or run so the don't have to smell it again.

When a cat has its mouth open like that, in what looks like a shocked expression, it's because cats can cycle air through their nose and out of their mouths at the same time. Smelling their owners feet and having their mouth open like that means they're trying to smell it more / smell it for a longer period of time, because they love you.
