The make-up designer only taught the first actors, from there all the actors do it themselves and teach it to the next person in line. For an experienced actor it takes around 12 minutes to complete (depending on the cat off course) ;)

When you think about it, leaning into the superficial creepiness of this scene is a brilliant choice. I mean, it's a poem about how when a cat is staring intensely into nothing (something a lot of people find creepy), it's actually just contemplating its own "secret name", a ritual that's of deep personal significance to the cat, but ultimately harmless and innocent. Cats in this universe are simply very spiritual creatures - Jellicle (angelical) Cats.

I would've been terrified if I saw that as a kid. I was never a fan of audience and performer interaction in shows as a kid. I actually got to see a production of Cats when I was 6 back in 2008. I remember being really nervous and scared before the show because my older sister mentioned something about the cats tapping your shoulder during the performance which I was terrified over!

In my opinion this whole scene is weird on purpose because they present the jellicles to the audience as a whole new world, and as the show progresses we see the jellicles in a much more "human" light, as something more familiar, at first these all look like creepy weirdos but then so many if them get depth or character personalities that make them unique

They were only given 4 months from the movie's release. It's not helped with the fact that Tom Hooper had them manually rotoscope the actors rather than using motion-capture, and he asked for dailies which slowed the overall process down because Hooper apparently doesn't understand that rendering low-res graphics still takes a lot of time.

When my family first got a cat, I was 5 and my parents said I could name it. Being your average 5 year old, I named the cat a gibberish name that didn't even sound English. When I saw this musical, I realized that the name I came up with sounds distinctly "Jellicle-like." I'm guessing these names like "Jellylorum" "Munkustrap" etc. are supposed to sound like gibberish a child would name their cat, since Webber supposedly took a lot of inspiration from children (rumor has it, his niece is the one who invented the term "Jellicle")
