The unknown spring-loaded flat blade socket discussed at 13:50 is a Snap-on F-21-N Chevrolet Oil Pan Socket. It was produced from the 1940's (possibly earlier) through at least the late 1960's. They show up fairly often on eBay.

I got a set of impact universal drive sockets from HF years ago, and they've saved my ass quite a few times. They beat up the nuts and heads a little, but they'll fit already mangled nuts and bolts when nothing else will, and I've never had them fail to break things loose. Another excellent video.

At 13:51 that looks like what would be used for driving slotted screws with an airgun and the collar keeps it from slipping off. I've seen them used on an assembly line where the worker is having to install self-tapping screws into an aluminum casting and it really speeds up production.

12:26.. Husky has a large set of E-Torx .... Jeeps use alot of these.....22:50... Alot ( most) sockets are made broached higher or lower... Higher to hold a nut at the top to assist in getting the fastener on where you don't have room to get your hands in... and lower to provide more bite over taller fasteners. .... That socket isn't "wallered" out..... Perfectly normal.....

Lots of E torx on Mercedes vans. Can sometimes sub a 12pt but nice to have the right thing. Worked at a shop doing van conversions for two years.

Towards the end of your vid, you mention those SAE + metric sockets with the rounded flutes... Those are known as "metrinch" sockets and easily available. Usually made in Taiwan, "Metrinch" is a brand. First seen on those "Seen on TV" infomercials, they have gotten plenty expensive. They are heavier duty than most consumer-grade sockets, and I've used them in impact wrenches. I use mine a lot on rounded heads (metric or SAE) that nothing else will work...

18:35 is a clutch plate socket to remove the mechanism to separate the clutch plate incase of replacement. these are common in most cars not just trucks.

SK is an excellent brand and suneX is a good more budget brand. 3/8 is the most common size I probably get an SK 3/8 and then sunex quarter inch and 1/2 in

I use a milwaukee version of the 1/2" square-to-1/4" hex adapter with a speeder wrench to use modern bits - mainly I got it for 1/4" hex auger bits (irwin speedbor) which were slipping in the old brace I have but I use it with screws too. Not sure if the Pittsburgh is impact rated but most of the ones I have seen are, which means they can significantly lighten a tool box. Probably aimed at mechanics similar to the socket impact driver adapters for handymen/carpentry. PS: It's extremely useful when the work is delicate and you can't use heat or a penetrant. I had to use it just earlier to pull a galled-in screw holding a plastic handle onto an aluminum casting with electrics behind it, and I was not willing to risk degrading the plastic with WD-40.

The socket you're not sure about it's use on the second rail is used for one way security lag screws. Metal security doors.

Three sockets with round-wall/fluted design introduced approx 24 minutes: I bought the full set from Harbor Freight back in the late 80s early 90s; I think it ranges from 3/8*10mm to 1”*25mm. If I recall they were only available for a year or two. I thought perhaps it was due to patent infringement regarding Metwrench’s socket design - but I don’t know that as a fact. Someone helped themselves to my set but fortunately I acquired my father’s set he bought after seeing my sockets. They would consistently take off rounded off fasteners that Snap On’s Flank Drive would fail at.

Most augers work well but I recommend against Irwin because they are horribly made now

On the Weatherhead portion I might add theses sockets were very useful as brass fittings would easily distort (twist) from pressure due to wrench flat contact. Any distortion usually prevented the line nut from being properly received into the fitting. Always seemed to be odd angles and tight spaces.

I have a set of those metwrench sockets...I found them in someone's trash pile after the hurricane.. but I found the whole set..I haven't used them yet but they look new....I think that's what they are called... But they have both sizes on them.

That socket at 14:00 looks like it might be self centering for straight slot screws. We’ve all had it happen, straight slot screwdriver always wants to kick off to the side. This looks like it might counteract that by keeping the driver but centered. I don’t know for sure it’s just a thought.

I have a 5/8s impact 1/2 drive deep socket that's 6 or 7 inches long. I think it's a Mac. It's for nuts on the studs holding the Jake brake housings on a big cam Cummins

One of the newest speciality bits I've acquired I got from an Amazon return pallet I bought. There was an sds hammer drill with the bit stuck in it. I had to take the gun apart to release it, then both as were good as new. Sold the gun kept the bit, I just wish I knew where to find one. Its a sds quick connection by 1/2" keyed chuck. At first I was dismissive, thinking it was just a goofy impulse purchase. Then I started to think about the fact every box of tap cons comes with a smooth shank masonry bit sized accordingly, as do masonry wall anchors, ect. Those are always just wasted. They end up rolling around for ever, every great once in a while you won't have an sds gun amd you'll dig one up for a cordless hammer drill to.do something quick. But this put use to those with the benefit of a decent sized true rotary hammer drill. Its I my sds bit box now forever, I'd buy a couple more if I knew where to find them honestly

That half inch socket to quater inch hex drive i cold have used years ago i was. Pulling off doors on a MG B to Reskin and they were attached by very stubborn number 3 Phillips head machine screws i tried all kinds of strange contraptions including a manual impact hammer and heat and lots of penetrating fluids. Eventually i found a off brand screw driver that had a redicuosly over sized handle and a hex spot on the shank i was able to clamp vise grips to the hex and with the help of another guy we got it loose and i did the door skin on a work table and welded it off the car ive owned several other British cars and they all used the same mounting hardware the only thing I concluded. As to why the screws. Were sch a challenge is that. The paint they send to use remained pretty soft for years and. I think that had sort of a lock thread system to the fastener i owned that car for 15 years and the paint was so soft that on many spots i had hand buffed the original paint down to factory primer ? I did respray the entire car with a DuPont 2 stage system as well as using a block system of theirs as well that acted as a primer / bonding system for the base then clear coat btw the respray was a different paint but factory color and was way easier to maintain I see to get a lot of compliments

The spud nut sockets you have may have been replaced by flip sockets in the tire industry for semi-trucks. Everything I used for the past 18 years has been a flip socket.

@@RecklessEnterainment other sockets sometimes work, I remember doing it once rebuilding a bmw engine at tech school and one of the other guys was hogging the torx sockets. Terrible idea, I broke a lot of stuff there from memory: a windscreen, a glass coolant tester shattered in my hand, chrome sockets, i was told to hammer the bearing off a fwd drive shaft and I hit it so hard it sparked and eventually flew across the workshop, crossthreaded the brake caliper on a brand new Civic R. Haha we live and learn

Theyre better fastners, they last longer. Simple as that. Annoying, almost infuriating when you don't have the right tool, but after a while you buy what you need and you never go back. Allen's could be used in place of torx or triple squares but you would find yourself breaking rusty fasteners more often.
