This is an acting masterclass from the late Geoffrey Baylden - if he'd played this character in a serious period movie he'd have been nominated for an Oscar.

this is beyond fantastic. We did not have this in the US (that I know of - certainly not in South Texas). It seems British television programming has always been extraordinary. Thank you so much for posting.

This brings back memories, use to watch this as a kid. You know all these shows Catweazle, Folly foot, The Champions, Mission Impossible (Series) unwittingly had a profound effect on all of us growing up at this time. Everything about these shows including a good music score did so much. For me just like watching these and shows like Robinson Crusoe in holidays was developing that individualistic thing that I feel isn't around so much with the youth these days. I guess its just the way the worlds gone with so much to occupy the mind in immediacy through internet IPhone etc. Great that that is sometimes it completely stifles a good imagination

As this was a London Weekend Television programme I was never sure how much of the UK ever saw this series,but as a child I found it magical
@flyinspirals8 жыл бұрын
+S Norten I would have loved it -- imagining being that boy, and finding such a treasure... and the adults not getting it... My sister and I would have made up a Catweazle game, and confounded the adults almost as much as the 'real' one did : ) The only UK children's show we ever got to see was The Double Deckers, which was on public television one season. We were enchanted -- still reference the theme song as adults, haha. And this show is better. Oh, we also got to see the Black Beauty series, which was breathtakingly beautiful compared to anything on US children's television. But that was later.

This sort of thing can look really bad at the wrong end of 40 years but it has lasted brilliantly...can't go wrong with a good cast and script! Long overdue for a remake, I can't imagine why some exec didn't pick this up during the Potter/Rings fever...

Considering how season 2 starts, he seems to have gotten back to his own time in the end of season 1, so I recon he gets back in the end of season 2 as well, but I really don't know.
@Darren799 жыл бұрын
RubberyCat - not spoiling the series 2 ending for anyone who hasn't watched it but had they made a third series it was intended that Catweazle would crash back at this farm except it has new owners and he would have been supported by a young girl.
@RubberyCat8 жыл бұрын
***** The problem with that mentality, is that a lot of things are good enough to watch, but not good enough to buy. This series ends up in that area.
@flyinspirals8 жыл бұрын
+RubberyCat exactly. But the money grubbers only care how many they can sell, not how many people will never see it again because they're not gonna shell out for it. Capitalism is only really fun if you care more about making money than about any other pleasure.

SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS I always believed it to mean: 'The Farmer Arepo Has Worked Wheels' . It is certainly ancient, and can be found at sites such as Pompeii. It is thought to have been used as a good luck charm. I suppose that if you thought of 'Farmer Arepo' as a deity, then it might mean something along the lines of 'The Gods Turn The Wheels Of The Universe'. But nobody's sure. I think that it's simply very cool.

@Jeansieguy10 жыл бұрын
SdeCiduus So that's where telling bone comes from. The Sator latin thingy is from a "Sator square" which was inside or outside of houses of early Christians, the letters make the anagram pater noster or Our father. Odd thing for a wizard to be saying.
@RubberyCat9 жыл бұрын
***** Not really that odd, religiosity and magical beliefs used to be far more entwined once, from what I have read, I think it is more odd that he called his magic "the dark arts", as I see it.
