Thank you for this history lesson on the 5th regiment F Company Mounted Infantry. My great great grandfather was in this company and regiment. I found his name on a monument in Oak Wood Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois . It was dedicated to the Confederate soldiers who are buried concentricly around the "mound" as it is called. I am happy to now know more about his capture and burial. Now to find his wife who vanished before 1870, leaving young children (including my great grandmother) orphaned. My entire family, paternal and maternal, were from Letcher County.

Do you know about which area in Letcher County they lived in? If so, it would be a little more helpful to find her grave if it is still marked. Some of them from that time now have unmarked graves. It would be a place to start anyway. If you also know her maiden name I would suggest joining the Letcher County Genealogy Page on Facebook. A lot of people have found cousins and where they came from on that page.

@Kytnliving My great great grandmother's name was Mariah Brashears (with an S on the end as opposed to those without the S, and there is a reason for that but I won't go into that here). There is actually a hard back book in the Library of Congress on the Brashears family. I've seen it and read the pertinent parts concerning those from whom I am directly descended. Anyway, since Letcher County took up a lot of real estate, and other counties were carved out of it, it may prove to be a nightmare to find where the Joseph C. Newland family lived. I grew up in Hindman, Knott County. It was once called Macpherson.. The Amburgey Cemetery has several Newland headstones. Some stones there are unreadable. The problem is, I can't find a death certificate in Kentucky for Mariah B. Newland. Thanks for your suggestion, though.

@@BSW19 at one time, Knott County was part of Letcher County and Perry County and I think a piece of Floyd and/or Pike County. It is one of those I really haven't looked into very much yet. Letcher County was carved out of Pike, Perry, and Floyd County. Depending on how far back you go with the genealogy you might find the records according to the area as it was called in the time frame that the person lived in. For instance, we have records going all the way back that puts some of my people in Pike County even though today it is Letcher County. Marshall's Branch was a later addition to Letcher county because of John Wesley Wright.

My great, great , grandfather Lafayette Bentley was in company D, 13th Kentucky calvary. Enlisted on October fourth 1862 at whitesburg, Letcher county Kentucky. They surrendered to union forces at Louisa, Lawrence county Kentucky in April 1865. On his way home to visit his wife and three children was captured and hanged by Union forces at the age of 26.

Oh wow. Our condolences to your family. We had family that also fought for the South as well as the North, so ours was kinda torn with the conflict. But the death you described actually did happen quite a bit back then. That is why the Breaks Interstate Park has the Unknown Confederate Soldier beside of the road. He also was on his way home when he was killed. There are several soldiers that are buried over in South of the Mountain just after you pass over into Virginia from Jenkins. The dates on the markers indicate either they all died during one battle or they were captured and hung for which side of the conflict that they were on. We looked up their names and couldn't find any record of their unit. We do have a lot of information about what happened with Caudill's Army with the Clabe Jones account of the Civil War on here if you would like to view it. Its under the Clabe Jones Autobiography playlist.

Oh wow. We hope we did your ancestor right in this. The 5th Kentucky Infantry Regiment was an interesting one for me to do. I broke them up into two videos actually. The second one covers the two battles for Whitesburg, Kentucky. A lot of places want to place the people of Letcher County on the Union side of things...but in reality not many of them agreed with the North over Lincoln. While he is celebrated today, not very many people liked Lincoln while he was in office.

My Combs and Cornetts!
@Kytnliving11 ай бұрын
Yes, there are a lot of them in Letcher County. We run across them all of the time in the Mountain Eagle readings as well. The Combs family was heavily involved in the French-Eversole Feud. My children's great-great-grandmother was Nellie Combs from Vicco. I have a cousin)that lived in Vicco.

I know the Shepherd family from Sandlick very well. If you are on the other social media, Facebook, go to the Letcher County Genealogy page, they have several families that chime in there including the Shepherd family. While we do not do genealogy, we do try to help direct people to the correct places to find their families. They have helped me a great deal as I am from both Adams clans there. I highly recommend the page to anyone who is trying to reconnect to their Letcher County roots. We wish you a wonderful journey in finding your kinfolk.
