A couple of respectful hints from the cold Canadian north. Always think of keeping your clothing dry, in order to reduce your risk of hypothermia, When you start cutting down poles and branches, and find yourself growing warm, don't take off your wet outer coat and allow your dry inner jacket to become wet also. Take off the outer coat, remove your dry inner one, tuck it away in your pack, and put the wet one back on. That way you will have a dry coat to wear inside your shelter. When you are clearing the snow out of your shelter, don't kneel on the snow. Kneel on a few dry pine branches. That way, your pants will also be dry when you crawl into your shelter. Also don't use your mittens to clear the snow out of your shelter; instead, make a little broom out of pine twigs and use that to sweep out your shelter. That way, your mittens will also be warm and dry for the night. This may seem to be overkill until that night when it drops to forty below zero. In those circumstances, a dry coat, dry pants, and dry mittens may be what save you from hypothermia. Thanks for a beautiful video.

This video of surviving a snowstorm with a winter bushcraft shelter is absolutely mesmerizing! The resilience and resourcefulness demonstrated by the adventurer in such extreme conditions are truly remarkable. From constructing a shelter to starting a fire, every step of the survival process is a testament to human ingenuity and adaptability. It's inspiring to see how basic survival skills can make all the difference in challenging situations. This video serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of being prepared and resourceful, even in the face of nature's harshest elements. Watching this adventure unfold is not only captivating but also educational, offering valuable insights into survival techniques and the power of the human spirit.

Great video. I love the action without the needless "expert" guidance and advice. I am puzzled why nobody has invented a portable device to catch the heat from a fire and use it to warm a human in situations like this. (Other than a stove) Thank you for your great video. All I could hear was wet snow, sleet, or freezing rain hitting the ground. And I know that those are terrible conditions to be in, yet there is something so relaxing in seeing you enjoying yourself in a primitive environment. When we are miserable and cold and hungry, the fire feels great, the food is gourmet and most of life’s worries are forgotten. I’m envious, and hoping to get out soon myself.

@@exussr4275 how so? Tell us why. We know that millions of good folk suffered cruelly in the communist "paradise" of the Soviet Union, where the apparatchiks took what little there was for themselves, and everyone else was left to go "fake" themselves, but many people don't like what they see happening around Russia today, and so are prepping in their own small way for having to deal with some of the difficulties you experienced under the Soviets. I wonder if your life under that repressive regime has permanently blunted that part of your mind which once would have been filled with positivity, and encouragement to anyone who applies their love of the outdoors to practical survival situation skills and problem solving. Negativity and cynicism, and sneering contempt will bring no joy to your life. Lighten up, you are here in the west, where you have chosen to be. Enjoy what we have to offer, we are not perfect, but if find you us and our ways so unbearable, I am sure Mother Russia would rejoice greatly at the return of one of her sons from the shallow artificiality of life in the west. Good luck and happiness to you wherever your future leads you, stay safe and remember you are free to enjoy what wilderness we have in your own way, so long as you treat it with respect and do no harm. And you are free to insult us and our ways without any harm coming to you. God bless and be lucky

Everyone who went through Scouting in the Sixties received intensive and valuable bushcraft and survival training. We were taught to recognize animals by their scat and spoor and how to trap them for food. We went on night compass marches and built 3 rope bridges across mountain streams. We also learned how to safely handle firearms and hit what we were aiming at. My Scout training held me in good stead as an adult backpacking the mountains throughout British Columbia, Canada where I encountered Black and Grizzly bears, Cougars, Wolves, and Elk and Moose in the rut. I always wore wool clothing which outperformed the synthetic materials, learned to use a map and compass, and could build a fire in any condition. I also learned to not scrimp on boots or sleeping bags. Mt step-son went through scouting from 2001 to 2008 where he learned to make sidewalk chalk. Baden-Powell is rolling over in his grave, I'm sure.

Peace be upon you, your brother from Morocco🇲🇦❤️. I want to say we ask God for safety in this world and the hereafter. Indeed, it may be events such as drowning, fire, earthquake, snowfall, sleeping in forests, remote places, and other natural quarts. Therefore, we must educate children and young people on the way to escape from every predicament, such as sports, swimming, cooking, hunting, heating with wood, and building a house to enter in case of emergency, all of this for the sake of survival. Thank you.

@Joshua Gammon I saw one video from Japan where this guy was in his very small vehicle and had custom made blackout curtains held in place by magnets. He didn’t realize that he portrayed himself as being in the middle of the night trying to stay warm when in fact one of the black out curtains was letting in daylight. There’s a lot more but it’s sufficient to say eventually they screw up. Thanks for your effort it was a good video.

Finally, a bush crafter that doesn't waste energy over processing fire wood. Native people never cut up wood, they just stuck one end into the fire and kept feeding it in. Still don't get that sparker thing, (Ferro rod) they make a product called a MATCH or a BIC lighter that actually makes fire. LOL
@JoshuaGammon

I've had experiences with lighters and matching getting wet and not working. Ferro rod never fails. Easy once you practice a lot with it.

I lived outside , I didn't just camp for a week or so, in the real winter. I am going to share with you some tips,, and several go against the smokey the bear thing. Rule one: never let the fire go out! Rule two: never get cold because you will never get uncold. Rule 3: All mistakes lead to death so remember rules one and two, and especially rule 3. Rule 4: Do not ever, EVER take risks in the winter time...or refer to rule 3. Rule 5: Never overexert yourself in the winter because you still have more to do, or refer to rule 3. Never get wet or get overly sweaty: rule 3, because you are going to freeze to death before getting back to camp....and oh, By the Way, did you let that fire go out while you were away....what are you going to do about that?...since you are dead. Keep dry clothes for when you get back to camp so you don't die because you foolishly go wet or overexerted yourself. In case you fuckup and you forgot to cover the fire, always ALWAYS have some instant fire starter to get the fire going......because your hands will be frozen and you won't be able to do anything.....and refer to rule 3. What sort of stuff? Cardboard soaked in parrafin and gasoline is a good start. You can carry quite a lot of that in zip lock bags in every pocket to save your ass. Of course steel and flint, but always bring as many lighters as you can hide. They won't last forever, but you can save your life. The guy in the video put the tree upside down, you want them to shed the water down, not capture in and flood the leanto when it warms up. Now, if he could, he should start digging like hell in front of the leanto to make a pile of dirt behind it, to make sort of a wall and a reflector of heat back toward him. Remembering Rule 1: what should he have done first? It is winter and the sun will soon go down. Gather all resources first,.....and that mean wood as much as he can and screw everything else. Notice he got caught with far to little firewood here. Rule 6: don't be a weanie about collecting firewood, just hall as much shit as you can to your camp as fast as you can. Rule 7: don't bother sawing neat little piece of firewood, that is not the goal when you don't want to freeze to death. What you do is this: take long and large branches and swing them like a baseball bat againd a tree to smash them into like 4 or 5 foot logs. If there is a big rock, even better, use it as anvil and smash the biggest logs you can hall into like 4 to 6 foot logs. Don't waste time being a pretty fru fru camper, get bus and be efficient to save you life every day. Compare watching the survival videos to what I tell you now. When I actueally lived it, I could make a pile of wood 5 feet wide and 20 feet long quickly often with no saw at all. I also used huge pile like that as insulation around the camp and consumed it over time. Now, another really important thing to know ....otherwise refer to rule #3. Water management and heat. Always have more "dew rags" than you ever imagine that you would need and stuff them in every pocket. Everything from water filtration to wiping your ass matters. Back to Rule #2: If you really don't want to die you will need large quantities of hot water. What? you may say. Listen or die kiddo. Wgen I lived outside for a winter doing my Walden pond thing but really roughing it. I got three ten gallon lobster pot type pots, and a few 5 gallon pots. I had 2 30 by 20 foot tarps over my enclosure that protected my tent and all around poles in the ground that kept the wind out with a clear plastic surround: nice view. I dug a fire pit with a pipe that came through the ground to the base of the fire pit to create airflow that I could meter. I put a heavy cast iron reflector behind it to hold and reflect heat. The entire interior was surrounded by logs and 12 haybails. We are talking about insulation here, do not do this at home without listening carefully. Now, what about the water? I boiled all of that water in rotation and use every three days and filtered it with 7 layers of dew rags, like cheesecloth. All of that boiling water was in the tent and it was sheathed in blankets and clothing( to be kept hot for the next morning) If it got colder, I would crack it open and let some heat escape and opposite if it got too hot. I also had set up a tub that held 40 gallons of water, nice hot water, so I was taking hot baths in the middle of the cold. I never got below 60 degrees in the outside layer. I kept it at about 70 degrees in the tent. My tub was about 85 degrees............now are you ready, that winter it was minus 26 faranheit for 10 days striaight and all around piss you off cold that winter. I had a blast.
