This performance never gets old and neither does your reaction. Un-Funking-Believable! "Tarzan" as you call him is challenging his bandmates the whole way! He steps right up there and says "I'll make you feel real good, just watch and see." You even have a rare call & reply interaction between him and the drummer. He calls on them to bring the best they got and they do! The sum of the interactions is far greater than the individual parts. Even you feed off the musical energy these guys released here! A Historical performance that never gets old for me.

That Mark Farner guitar riff is in the top ten of all time. Mel Sacher's heavy bass is sublime. The drumming amazing. These guys in their prime were the essence of rock/psychedelic music. They are three guys who didn't have a style consultant, choreographer, and just loved to rock out. They still play, and they didn't fight over who made the band who was the leader. They just played together and worked every day. They were all born in working class factory town. They sold out stadium's because of their energy and enthusiasm to make damb sure you were going to remember their performance. The only other band like this nowadays that I have seen is Flatbush Zombies out of Brooklyn

OMG ~~ This is the best live performance I have ever seen! I can't imagine finding one that's more intense, physical, passionate, etc. etc. 💖 💖 💖 Mark Farner had to be one of the best front men in ANY rock band. And the drummer and the bass player were absolutely amazing as well. This was early on in their career. I think all of them were under 21 years old at the time this performance was recorded. You can TELL they were still a cohesive unit -- watching the way they make eye contact to ensure they're on the same page in the performance. It's lovely to see that .... so sad they began having problems with their manager and eventually even with each other.

You're awesome brother! As I just posted elsewhere, this tune, I think, defined GFR in the early days. Four stages of the song, exhibits their tightness, musicianship, and yes, total passion and funk! EDIT - It's kind of like an opera with all the different sections. The 100% best rendition (that I've heard recorded) was their breakout double-set "Grand Funk Live" release in front of a few different audiences, but I'm told up to 77,000 fans, with nary an error to be found.

GFR - my first concert - 1969. Raw power. Where’d they get the energy? Detroit. Lead and drums both 21 years old. Bass player was 18. At that time, no others in the group. That all came from those three. Seats were about 15 feet from the speakers. My ears are still ringing and I love it.

Grand Funk Railroad got their name from the Grand Trunk Railroad that runs through Michigan which is where they are from. As a matter of fact they are from Flint which is about 40-50 miles north of Detroit. If u haven't listened to it yet listen to their song American band. The video was filmed on one of the band members uncles farm somewhere in Michigan. Very cool video that is really just a home movie. Can't get anymore real than that.
