I have a funny bear story. I’m Hispanic and from the Atlanta, Georgia area. My wife who is white is from a small town in the mountains of Pennsylvania. When I first visit her family in Pennsylvania a bear came up to her great grandfather apple tree. This is the first time I ever seen a black bear. Well her 85 year old great grandfather goes outside slaps the bear on the butt and tells it to get off its tree. I’m like what kind of hillbilly crap that I get myself into 😂.

We used to live in the same county as you before moving to Florida, bears were always breaking into our shed, 12 times one year, made a door out of 2 inch thick wood and it was busted into pieces, or they would just rip the whole wall off just to get at the garbage, they have incredible strength, those cans were only a slight delay on them getting their meals, I actually watched one unscrew the top and take the garbage like it was nothing. Don’t miss dealing with that all the time anymore. Stay safe and as I’m sure you know, don’t get between a momma bear and her cubs!

Yup! I saw a bear going to the backdoor which was closed but unlocked, he twisted the door knob with his front paws while standing and walked backwards (on two legs like a human) while opening the door. He went inside to the fridge opened that door, grabbed a pack of ham AND as he was walking back out turned around and closed the backdoor as if he was never there. 🤣

My inlaws were "tenting it" across Alaska about 20 yrs ago. They were in a gated campground. During the night a bear reached in through the wall of the tent and snagged mom's jeans. Another camper was video taping it for proof for the sheriff. You could see how happy the bear was to have a new pair of jeans. Lol!

When I was younger we were camping with friends in the Smokies. We had adjoining campsites and the older kids were in a tent in between us. One night we were awakened by a noise, shining a light out we saw a bear getting in the locked cooler grabbing a pack of sliced cheese and took it just in the woods behind our site. It sat there and pealed each slice and ate it. When finished it got up and walked away. Next morning we found the package and all the wrapping right where it left them. Funny story, but lessons learned!!😂

hey hey hey way to go Boo-boo! During our staycation last week I left of box of trash, NO FOOD, just empty wine bottles, beer cans, paper stuff by the fire ring. Next morning every single thing in that box was NEATLY piled up beside the now empty box. From past experience with raccoons on the ranch I know it was a raccoon that took out each peace and after examining it neatly piled the items up on the ground.

We have bear-proof containers that are pretty ingenious here, supplied by Waste Management. You have to squeeze two recessed levers together and simultaneously lift the lid. But our cans open automatically when the garbage truck turns them upside down and shakes. Have not yet seen a bear able to do that maneuver. In fact bears never touch the cans because they know it's futile. Except, last week a small cub came around and knocked one over to see if he could do it. Our cans are 96 gallons, so quite large. No dice. Not sure where mom was. Letting him learn the hard way, I guess.

Your right you can't underestimate the intelligence of a bear. When we go camping, we don't have issues with bear but racoons. I have a few Noorio camera systems mounted (magnetic mount) outside my RV and capture at night mostly Racoons roaming. In our last camping trip racoons got into the food of our neighbors and tore up their grocery bags they left out. They were tent camping.

You have no idea until you camp in Yosemite National Park in CA. The many bears that cruz the campground at night are MIT graduates, they can open any thing and any car. They'll peel a car open like an Orange. I used to spend 4 weeks a year in Yosemite and all I did was watch the bears at night, amazing what they can do and how fast they do it. I've seen them open bear boxes and clean them out, a trash can is child's play. Here in the TN mountains we just keep our trash to ourselves and not share it with our furry friends.

Trainers in circuses used to teach bears to ride bicycles. Humans constantly now underestimate animals cause circuses have been outlawed and this behavior is now not seen as often as it was.

Welcome to country life, while living in downeast Maine -Milbridge on ocean. Used to have bear visitors aiming for shed where garbage was stored. Saw the scat left behind and claw marks on door. Called my local game warden to live trap with donuts, etc. took around 3 days of checking for bear to be trapped. Kept bird feeders, garbage cans and barbecue in garage, and never had another problem.

Love your videos! Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but there are videos of people engineering different obstacle courses for squirrels to get food from a feeder and the courses are very elaborate. Some of them even have motorized sections! Very interesting (and funny) to watch the process of designing, implementation to trials!

I lived in WV on top of mountain and our bear containers at our house is metal. Spring - late fall trash stayed in our garage until trash day and was put out that morning. In the winter time we put trash in bear containers anytime.

As I have said before, I grew up in Smoke Rise where we had Soooo many deer. When I lived there we had a hunting club back in the south nine forty which I believe is gone now but the day deer hunting season opened the SR property became overrun with deer who were smart enough to beat it out of the hunting area and nosh on all of the bushes around our homes and then the day the hunting season closed they disappeared back into the woods. My parents retired to the mountains of North Carolina where they had plenty of bears. They had a large porch on the second story of their home with a locked gate at the top of the access stairs and the bears learned in short time how to go all the way up the stairs, unlock the gate and make themselves at home on the porch furniture. Animals are most definitely smart!

When we lived in CT we use to be visited regularly by a pretty large and beautiful bear. You wouldn't think a creature as large as a bear would have any interest in hummingbird feeders, but I guess being omnivorous, they will eat just about anything. We would hang the hummingbird feeders on these wrought iron poles that were put pretty firmly into the ground. The bear would bend them down like they were made of a flimsy material to get to the feeders! I tried to straighten the bent poles, but it was no use, they are very strong animals. Never underestimate the ingenuity of a wild animal, when hunger is what drives them, they will prevail!

I work for a tree farm in the PNW and the things that the bears can do is nothing short of amazing. Mom's teach the cubs and so on down the line. We feed them to keep them from griddling the trees. That would stop the tree from growing and make it not harvestable.

I lived in the Vail Colorado area for a few years and there are several communities in the valley. The bears learned the garbage pick up schedule and traveled from community to community. It finally got to a point where people had to put their garbage cans out on the morning of the pick up day to keep bears out of the garbage

Back in the 60s, 3060s I went with my family camping in Yellowstone Park and if that time they had their garbage containers were underground and they just had a foot pedal on top that you would step on and the lid would pop open and one night well we were had a fire going and somebody else bare bear and everybody went running everywhere. Anyway, my mom took me and the other two boys and we slept in the tent her car my dad and the other brothers slept in the camp dead, garbage can was right next to the car and the next morning it was empty. They knew how to get into it. It’s amazing.

I've never actually witnessed something like this but have seen the aftermath of it many times. However, while camping in Assateague state park a few years ago, we were awoken by a crashing sound outside the RV just before daybreak. The noise was a wild horse nudging our igloo cooler off the picknick table, it was a sight to see.

What about an electric fence, that is used to keep the cattle in the in certain spot. It do not injury the farm animal one wire around the shield it do not hurt them .like the cattle it keep them in spot you want them .

We have a "vault" for our dog food Well, the first one we had we kept it outside of our RV because we had no room really inside (it was getting in the way) Went outside the next day and a raccoon chewed through the lid to get the food That vault was back inside that same day no matter now much it got in the way lol Thankfully there was only a little bit of dog food in the vault The raccoons got the remainder of the food and we went into town to get a fresh new bag Eventually bought a new vault as well

Thanks for sharing. Black Bears can be dangerous. Always good to make yourself look large, make a lot of noise and carry some bear spray just in case. They will charge if threatened, but usually a bluff charge. Recommend people read up on bears in your area and be prepared if confronted.

Our bear proof containers in Jackson, WY (which were required) had a fairly complicated release mechanism that required inserting a finger or fingers into a cutout to release the lock. Worked well.

This bear has had some practice. Many zoologists and others who study wild animals hesitate to associate learning and intelligence with the behavior exhibited by most wild animals - exceptions being some primates, crows, and octopuses (octupi). Maybe it's time they reconsider because what this bear and others have been seen doing on video can not be simply brushed off as "instinct."

They were licking the plastic packages that hold the dog food patties, which are pure raw meat. lol They didn’t touch the lettuce 😂
