With Celebrity Cruises:
There are two types of excursions: cruise line-sponsored and independent. If you don't want to book through your cruise line, you can book an independent tour with a private provider in a port you're visiting. But be sure to do your research ahead of time to ensure you've chosen a reputable tour operator and that you're getting a fair price. Also, if your independent tour is late returning to the pier, the ship is not required to wait for you. However, it will wait for cruise line-sponsored tours that run late.

We were on a ship sponsored tour on HAL and they left our group behind because the ship had to leave on time because the tide was going out and the ship would be stranded in port during low tide. The ship bussed us to the next port, put us up at hotel and we caught up with ship the next day. So no, they cannot always wait for their own tours to get back.

At least they took you to the next port to catch up with the ship 🚢 and you didn’t pay for it. If it was your own tour that would be whole different story. You would be responsible to catch up with the ship and it would be at your own cost.

Before you get off the boat that morning at your destination your cruise director would always tell you your time of arrival your time of departure and what time you need to be back at the boat before it takes off! If you decide to go too deep into far into the tour knowing you only have a few hours they're the best suggestion is to state close to the boat as possible don't drink too much and always arrive 2 hours early that way you can get to your cabin freshen up and enjoy the festivities on the boat or else you will be a native of that country!

The only tour group they will wait for is one sponsored by the SHIP...otherwise you're out of luck...notice how quickly the tour bus took off and left them on the pier stranded...

They didn't want to have to face the possibility of having to find accommodations for these passengers and damages if they're found to be the ones at fault. Who caused their late return to the ship?

@@bradthompsonuk2011 -It would be very difficult to find the bus company at fault for getting them there late since they wouldn't be responsible for delays do to traffic, mechanical failure, physical impairment of the driver etc. etc.

I've been on about 20 cruises and have NEVER missed a sailing. Yes, I have booked my own local tours on some (not all) cruises. If I do that, I pick one that isn't going far and is in the first half of the day. That way I get back to the pier in plenty of time and have a few hours to go shopping in the little markets CLOSE to the ship. Then, stroll back on board, no waiting line at the gangplank for last minute crowds. Get a drink and a snack up at the Lido deck and stake out a good spot on the rail overlooking the pier, so you can cheer on the pier runners.

My daughters drama school had a good phrase regarding time keeping and punctuality "to be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, and to be late is totally unacceptable, needless to say she is never late for anything.

@@marshalllucky No, actually been on 13 cruises and the 14th planned for next year so my experience is pretty much in your face. CAPTAINS have to undergo many years of training to become a CAPTAIN as do the bridge officers that work under him. There are many positions on the bridge but NONE are called a "boat driver". You don't "DRIVE" a SHIP, you SAIL a SHIP! The CAPTAIN is in complete control and has complete responsibility of the vessel. Now, if you are referring to the NAVIGATOR as the boat driver, you have your terminology wrong.

The money saved by selecting an independent excursion will be minute compared to funds spent to rejoin the ship in a later port or final destination. Plus the stress and aggravation! For those that unwisely left their passports in their staterooms they must also visit the closest US Embassy seeking assistance. From what I have heard the process can be time-consuming, some embassies have sporadic hours - particularly during a pandemic.

unless you book your excursion with the cruise line, the ship will not wait for you. The tour bus operator is only responsible for getting you back to the pier. The cruise line would have personnel on the pier waiting for the group to return and to assist them with transportation (but not paying for it) to either get to the next port to catch the ship or to get to the airport to get back home.

No sympathy for the inconsiderate passengers who wanted to delay the departure of thousands of other passengers who had no problem getting back to the ship on schedule. They will know better next time. Buy a cheap watch and set it to ship time. Don't rely on your cell phone time. It very well may be an hour or two different than ship time. They warn you about that on the ship, but some idiots still refuse to listen. BTW, the cruise line does NOT pay for your hotel or airline ticket to catch up to the ship, YOU do. LOL

antigonish63 I believe that the tour was a private one not through the ship at all. You are warned that these tours maybe cheaper than the ships but they are not great at getting you back on time, that's why they were stranded. If the tour had of been made through the cruise liner, then they usually will wait for you because it's there tour otherwise you are on your own. Plus it's funny how everybody else who was touring around made it back on time. Why should other passengers wait on you and the ship lose a fortune waiting on your entitled backside is beyond me. Lol.😂

D Lynn Yes you have the right idea it is best to spend a couple of dollars or euros more for a tour that will make sure you are back on time. The cheaper tours really don't care once they have been paid if you miss your ship they couldn't careless about it. They will over charge you to get you to the local airport etc.

Yes, the bus have a number at the bus front windshield glass. Why they left without the passengers .. no body knows ... but the Costa could wait here for a few minutes. It was a privately organised tour. My wife is a tour/shorex manager on a ship and they will ALWAYS wait for ship-booked tours, even if they are 4 hours late. But if you book a separate tour (even with a group of 20 people) and you are 2 minutes late.... Bad luck.
