There’s very little head on head collisions in rugby. A lot of it is due to the forwards rubbing and pushing against each other in the scrum, which is why you’ll see some forwards wearing scrum caps. Not for the head, for the ears.

I think you’d be surprised at how not wearing protection changes a contact sport. I think the fake grass they use in nfl probably leads to more injuries tbh. I know they’ve been changing the rules in nfl to make it safer I still think the way people can line each other up and blindside them is worse than what you’d usually see in rugby but still I don’t think it’d be as bad as you’d expect
