Seeing these Sicilian words in print makes me very proud of my Sicilian heritage; I grew up thinking that I spoke Italian, only to be shamed by the snobbery I've encountered, into realizing otherwise. Today, I am teaching myself proper Italian, but have also come to appreciate that the Sicilian Dialect is not only valid, but the product of Sicily's tormented past and survival of conquest and occupation by other nations; as with most language, it has evolved into a "living ethnic history".

This is translation of words Turiddu sings in sicilian dialect. It is named "Siciliana". Oh Lola, you have milk coloured shirt so white and red like cherry, when you appear (at the window) put a smile on your mouth, lucky whom give you the first kiss! Amidst your door blood is sprinkled, and I don't care if I die killed and if I die and go to Heaven whether I don't find you there, I don't even enter in.
