The fact that the title calls the enemy Red Army makes it sound like a very weird alternate history battle.
@estherkok Жыл бұрын
I had not considered that, oops haha. It was a red vs blue army situation, and since the video is from the POV of blue army's cavalry, and they defeat the reds, it made sense at the time... Ah well.
@DawidKov Жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, it's not that far off. In the 1960s, the famous Soviet film director Sergei Bondarchuk approached the Soviet Army with a request - to use some of the army's last remaining cavalry units to portray the French and Russian cavalry charges in "War and Peace." In response, the army created an entire unit - the 11th separate cavalry regiment. The men of this regiment would be trained in Napoleonic era tactics, and would perform in 19 films during its existence, most famously of course the aforementioned "War and Peace" (1967), but also "Waterloo" (1970), an international production with Soviet, Italian, French, American, Canadian, and British crews all contributing. Later on, they'd expand their repertoire - by the end of the regiment's existence they've pretty much done everything from the Crusades to the Napoleonic Wars to World War II.

We used rubber heads. And pine lances, not ash ones. But the number one factor for safety is riding ability and lance control. Training and good sense cannot sobstitute any rueset or safety precautions.

How would the men behind the first line avoid crashing into those ahead of them during a charge? would they just not charge until the first line retreated and pulled off to the sides? Or would they shoot for the gaps and charge individually as opportunities arose? Or perhaps form up in one line prior to charging so there weren't any men in the back to accidentally crash into them?

This video actually shows how important formation training is. From the images it is clear that every single one of those guys (and probably a few girls too) are excellent riders and their horses are well trained. But right from the start formation was lost and it got worse the further the ride. It is obvious that it is impossible to have all these riders and horses train together several times a year as they would have done way back. This is not meant as criticism, what you did there is formidable. One thing I'm wondering about is also how you would recognise your foe without any apparent visual signs? This is not my time period, so I have no answer to that question myself, earlier heraldry was of course the factor, later badges and colours (the later would still work here), but no idea how to do this with white armour.

How the hell do you get yourself this gear and participate in stuff like this? I've always wanted to get myself into such a thing but I don't even know where to start.
@airnt Жыл бұрын
the groups who join are always looking for new people. often it requires a lot of training and coaching getting the gear etc. A full 'knightly' representation is rather a big ask, but there are many less ambitious protrayals that you can start with. it depends a lot where you are based, but there are participants in here from Australia, USA, and all over Europe. do you want to ride or fight as infantry? the full get up involves: -historical clothing and armour underclothing, shoes, belts pouches -tentage, bedding and historical recepticals, pots , cutlery -weapons (swords bows, crossbows, lances, pikes, halbards, pollaxes) -armour -horse... bridle, saddle, horse armour, in this event i actually supplied the tents and stables for the horses present, as well as several tents for long distance visitors. often groups will pool tents witht he newer guys in the group. a basic kit can be about 1000€ or so realisitically. A full knightly representation is a many year process (part of the fun) and costs a great deal more. having said that, several of the riders here are riding horses we lent them out, on saddles we supplied with horsearmours we had for the animal and with armours even that i uppliued them with, using lances and swords i lent them. making things, training the tactics and the skills, the martial arts, the riding, the tentcraft, etc, is all part of it
