This is part four of a re-scripted version of the first part of a four part series that I made for BBC Leeds in 1987- 1989.It was based on Martyn Farrs book "The Darkness Beckons" and tells the history of cave diving in Britain.

Good stuff. I am a Diver. I am now Retired with Injuries. most of my Dives were SPEARFISHING out of DAUPHIN ISLAND AL. But my Son & I did our Certification Dives in Cyprus Springs & Vortex Springs. & We did a little Cave Diving there. But not too this Extreme. I started Freediveing as we would get hot wile Commercial Fishing for Red Snapper & King Mackerel in 1990 & then was Certified but most of my Dives were at Night. I love Flounder & would Dive with nothing but a Pole spear & 2 Dive Lights 1 on my head & 1 hand light. & Would spear them & stack them up on the Pole like Pancakes. These Dives were 14 to 22 miles offshore. In middle of the Night around Shipwrecks.

Amazing series ! I watched one after the other. Fascinated and in awe. What a shame that these brave men have never been recognised for their achievements in exploring the waterways and caves under our feet. Not only for their amazing discoveries but for helping to refine the equipment and making it safer to use. I couldn't help marvel when I looked back and thought of the breathing tube made from bicycle parts and hosepipe that started off this series.... Brave men indeed !!! Many thanks to all who took part and to SID PEROU for sharing this with us. Carole. Kent. UK

My wife and I have watched all 4 parts. 1 each night. We started on Monday Night with part 1. Then part 2 so on and so forth. I do wish that I had commented on them on, the nights that we watched them. Instead of me going now, and posting comments on several of them tonight…..

That’s cool but have you dived in a cave on a makeshift bike part breathing apparatus? Haha just kidding. I’d like to get into it some day but just don’t have the money at the moment. That’s awesome that you’ve done that. Seems breathtaking (pun intended 😜)

I am in a bit of a conflict...What these guys do is exploring dangerous places which do not have any value for nobody but themselves. So when such a cave diver has a problem and needs to be resqued other people are riscing their lives to recover their bodies or to bring them back alive. So..you understand what I mean? Of course people can not sit on their hands when a family needs closure or somebody can be saved..

Rule still is to save urself. A buddy is to tell rescuers ur in trouble. By the time help gets there, ur gone when cave diving
