Had the privilege of fishing the lake the very first day it was officially opened back in 1974. The trees were fully leafed out and it was a wild looking place for sure. We used to fish the Licking River and Beaver Creek before they were impounded and both had fantastic fishing, especially Beaver with its A+ smallmouth and red eye fishing. Lots of huge musky hung out there too and a few guys around fished exclusively for them. Cave Runs fishing flew under the radar for many years but not anymore…it gets pretty crowded and tons of fishing pressure now and you can certainly tell that by the size of the fish caught now. There’s still a fair amount of good fish but nothing like it use to be. If you come to just relax and enjoy the water you need to stay down on the main lake where it’s clear of submerged timber. The upper reaches are all full of $prop and $$lower unit gotchas and believe me, they will get you if you venture into those areas.

What an incredible feeling that must have been to get to fish the lake in its infancy. I really appreciate you sharing this history. I would have loved to have fished it back then and see all you are talking about 🙏

Thank you for the influence of Kayak fishing. Not a big fan kayaks but wife bought 3 used kayaks. They were not bad. Went to Lake Vesvusius in Wayne National forest in Southern Ohio. Found a 5 acre batch of lilly pads. 10 casts later , nailed a 2 ft 5 lbs bass!! Moreless a need a bigger sit on top kayak!!

This comment made me smile. Kayak fishing has become my life blood almost! I'm glad you all have some to yak in now! I've heard of that lake. Sounds like you had a blast. Now to get a sit on top yak and slay them!

@@thesaltygoogan That Lifetime Cruze 10ft wasn't too bad. I have 37 bolt on mods in my head to get. The paddle didn't have drip rings and I got soaked. Still loved it cause I'm hardcore.

You should fish eagle lake on MSU campus.... I bet it's amazing in a kayak! I used to put an old jon boat in it. Buttload of work but it was worth it. Caught a walleye out of the back pocket as well

Growing up there I always thought about doing a vid there but wasn't sure if anyone would appreciate it. Consider it done soon as my foot heals. And a walleye?! Craziness 😳😳

@@thesaltygoogan if there's white bass , there's musky. The big musky I saw was trailing my big white soft joined bass lure to a dock. I panic and didn't do a figure 8. It swam away. ( Salt Fork Lake , Ohio)
