Human mouths seem to require a lot of maintenance. Constant brushing, flossing, and the like are supposedly necessary to keep our teeth from decaying. So what did people do before modern dentistry? Today, we explore the fascinating reasons why our ancient ancestors often had lower rates of tooth decay than us. We briefly trace the history behind the human mouth’s fall from grace, and the ways people tried to get by with rotten teeth. We’ll then touch on George Washington’s horrible dentures and explain the value of fluoride.
Thanks to all of our Patreon supporters for helping us to improve the quality of our content! A special thanks to Bobby and Sean!

I just need to say thank you for this video. I've been debating whether or not to go on a sugar free diet for a while but this video made me do it. I managed to go exactly 3 weeks without eating any sugar (chocolate, cookies, cakes, ice creams, candies, you get it.) And today was my first day off of it. I decided to get a small ice cream and that's it, just to be safe. And afterwards I felt very ill. It actually took about 3 hours for my stomach to settle It's absolutely insane how our stomachs have grown so used to our sugar intensive diets and just 3 weeks without exposure makes them very weak again. It goes to show how unhealthy we're being nowadays Thanks again for giving me the chance to find this out, I'll be sure to be much more healthier from now on!

@@zeno3114 That's natural sugar that comes from fruit. Like he said in the video, there are such things as good and bad carbohydrates. What you eat today is referred to as "Refined Sugar". Personally I like to call it "SS" or "Synthetic Sugar". The difference between natural sugar from fruit and man made sugar is that natural sugar is naturally sourced unlike man made sugar which comes from plants like sugar cane, which contains a different type of Carbohydrate that sticks to the teeth easier thus attracting more bacteria that feeds off of those carbohydrates which causes the bacteria to produce acid which breaks down your teeth and so on.

I know nothing about teeth but I see that some native populations have better teeth than us so that probably mean the food we eat is way more process and therefore have hundreds of added ingredients like sugar are in our food that wore our teeth down faster. So what's I'm saying is modern food like the one in grocery store is loaded with ton of stuff that is a huge threat to our teeth. It's sad how humans change their diet so much that it's destorying what we consider very strong in our bodies.

My maternal grandfather died at the age of 90, with all his teeth, and no fillings. I am now 53, and have fillings in all my bottom molars, and two of the top ones -- at least I still have all my teeth though (except for the wisdom teeth, and four others that were pulled when I got braces, because otherwise my teeth couldn't have been straightened -- mouth was too small). Grandad may have taken better care of his teeth, but I think the difference is mostly down to the difference in the amount of sugar in the diet of someone born in 1906, versus that of someone born in 1968. Grandad, who was a farm kid, probably only enjoyed sodas when they went into town and he had one from a soda fountain. I grew up with sodas in the fridge, and cabinets full of Oreos, fig newtons, chocolate chip cookies, and what not. Every filling I have was drilled before I was fifteen years old. I hardly eat any sweets anymore, and haven't had sodas in years. I don't even take sugar in my coffee anymore. No doubt that helps. I would like very much to avoid ever having to get dentures.

Very interesting video. It's not just just tooth decay that became more common, our jawlines changed. As late as 250 years ago people had bigger jaws, having enough room for all of their teeth, while today many have to pull teeth before having braces. This affects things like breathing, making sleep apnea a modern problem. One of the big changes that happened was how babies ate. Blenders weren't a thing back then, they were breastfed while slowly starting to eat normal food, starting solids later and skipping the mush fase. Babies were also breastfed much longer, for several years, effecting the development of the jaw as well as boosting the immune system.

Ancient Roman skeletons have very good teeth. It was the advent of refined sugar that sped up the decline of oral health. Plus the teeth of paleolithic people show signs of dietary stress. They often went through periods of famine which shows up in the teeth. That's why humans transitioned to agriculture. To have a more reliable food source. Another Story I've found out about enhanced enamel toughness was from my friend, his whole life experience included daily diet, Lifestyle, Habit, Most daily meal that he had eat are some hard food that's not too insanely tough as I had tried multiple time and he a smoker and quite an sugar beverage drinker and he never ever rinse his mouth after eating nor drinking Yet He still achieved a condition of only a few eroded spot sticking on his enamel and Did not progress to a level that he had to visit a dentist for solving a oral problem. As for those who grew up drinking Milk powder not a even single drop of Mother breast milk and eating soft Meal while chucking on lots of sugary dessert and beverages, Let's just said that their supposed healthy life had become a nightmare when their life keep on progressing and I'm too suffer unnecessary Losses due to stupidity, bad Lifestyle and Bad choices until I figured out what needs to done to stop it completely, Man losing something that is keeping you Sane and feeling faithful will Deal a great amount of Toll to yourself...

@ DeRy The D. Eating hard foods does NOT make enamel harder. It is not a living thing like bone. Actually it does the opposite. Stresses in enamel cause micro fractures over time which can lead to weakening of enamel.

I’m afraid a lot of the reason why you’re underrated is because of your branding. Particularly your channel name (History Dose) and your profile picture (a green cartoonish logo).. none of which do your profound, thought-provoking content (which borders in the dark, gritty, and heavy real world philosophies) any sort of justice. You deserve more. Change your logo.

I am 59 and have been trying to work to lose some weight for several years. I am 5'7" tall and was 204 pounds three months ago, I have been that heavy for a decade. I have been on cholesterol and hypertension medication for more than a decade and I have a fatty liver. I decided to drop all carbs and alcohol three months ago. I eat lots of vegetables, meat, nuts, peanut butter, bacon...love bacon, plain yogurt too with some artificial sweetener for a treat. So far I have lost 20 pounds and I feel great. I am not adding fat to my diet, but I am not avoiding it either. I think my liver is better, but I am waiting for tests on that in 2 months. My goal is to get down to 170, the weight I was when I was 25. My wife no longer complains about me having bad breath and I have tons of energy. I am always a little hungry but it's never serious. I eat as much as I like, but I have been religious about zero carbs and alcohol. For me, I haven't felt this good in 20 years.

I'm amazed by traditional meals from “undeveloped” cultures, though I don't believe they're undeveloped, their food is, & what I mean by that is that many traditional cultures still don't eat processed foods, instead opting for their traditonal diets, take for instance the inuit culture, they got somewhat lucky with their food as they managed to keep their traditional meals & have great teeth. Mexico's cultures used to have a great traditional set of meals, until the spanish arrived, & even though the two cuisines mixed to create what we know & loce today, it also brought mass poverty due to the lack of power Spain had because of the wars in Europe, & sum up that the independence left Mexico in ruin & then the ongoing conflicts & radely changing president took a hit on the economy, therefore having to rely on cheap processed food for survival.

Also back in the times thry had natural brush with medicinal properties,like the Arak stick taken from a particular tree. This stick is very common in countries like Saudi Arabia, and is to be chewed on top till it looks like bristles, and hence can be used to brush the teeth seceral times a day.

you misidentified the problem here, it is not carbs that are the cause of dental problems as can be witnessed outside of the Western world where people consume copious amounts of rice. carbs aren't the problem, it's mostly gluten that's causing the problem. If not that than it's exclusively bread. Sugar ofcourse if consumed a lot does destroy teeth, but that's kind of a no brainer at this point.

watching this video and seeing the reference of sugar and how addicted we have become to sugar, I instantly concluded that I could live without added sugar(not to boast but I don't like adding sugar to juices or shakes). All types of food has an intrinsic sweetness that one can adjust too, the natural sweetness. But I can't live without salt though. In fact I am addicted to salt, to be specific right amount of salt in the food. How the hell did you get hook to salty foods? Salt is not found in any of the grains or fruits or vegetables we eat. Does anyone know about this?
@тито-к9в
@тито-к9в 2 жыл бұрын
depends where you are in the world, but more than likely thousands of years ago humans saw other animals licking salt deposits wherever they existed and copied them hahaha now we're addicted. to be fair, salt does contain things your body needs.
@herbertwestiron
@herbertwestiron 2 жыл бұрын
You are most probably not 'addicted' to salt. Since salt does not have any addictive properties. You are 'craving' salt which mean you need good quality salt. Unlike sugar salt is actually healthy for your body and is required. Therefore your body craves it. P.s. Not crave salt but feel hungry for salt

@@herbertwestiron What about the cravings for eating savoury? Also how can you infer one craving as good and one craving as bad? Craving is craving. and craving is the necessary condition for something to be called addictive.
@herbertwestiron
@herbertwestiron 2 жыл бұрын
@@SanjeevTiwari92 I literally wrote that. Salt does not have addictive property but you still want salt because it's required for basic human body functions. Not the same with sugar. However you are right we don't crave for salt we feel hungry for it. Craving would mean that someone's addicted to eating salt. So my mistake with words.
