The title 'Qud' derives from the Arabic Quds, which means 'holy,' and is part of the Arabic name for Jerusalem, al Quds, meaning 'the Holy.' While it's not 100-percent spelled out, it is believed that either the Land of Qud through which you travel is a far-future post-apocalyptic Israel (many of the place names are derived from areas in or around Israel, such as Bethesda Susa, Garden of Geth, Lake Hinnom, and of course the notorious Golgotha; and much of the imagery is suggestive of the Middle East, such as camel merchants called Dromads, kaffiyehs as articles of clothing, the Six Day Stilt location is essentially a massive bazaar or outdoor market full of tents where you can haggle and barter for items, there are historical figures called Sultans who make up the background lore of Qud, and so, so, SO much more), or at the very least, is a colonized alien world, remade in the image of Israel (as the Eaters, the precursor race worshipped as gods by the inhabitants of Qud, and whom the non-mutated True Kin claim direct descent from, were known as a spacefaring race, their name supposedly derived from the practice of "Eating up all the worlds' resources and abandoning it once they'd used it all up, like locusts devouring all the crops in a field then moving on to the next"). The writing of the game is so good (if nonsensically glued together in some areas, as the lore is randomly generated, and thus many of the non-predetermined books and scrolls sound like a jumbled word-salad, rather than anything meaningful), being evocative of Frank Herbert's Dune books, or the first three Star Wars movies, or old pulp sci-fi rags (which the game references with its starting menu and title font, which is definitely reminiscent of either a moldering paperback book or First Edition Dungeons and Dragons module box art, like you'd find in some thrift store bin, your dank basement, the dusty recesses of the closet, etc.).

Also, as for why people hate Golgotha (aside from it's ominous and meaningful name, if you know the Bible like the back of your hand): it's one of the most frustratingly designed levels, because of 1.) there is no obvious entry point on the surface level, forcing you to jump into one of three or four very deep chutes... very deep chutes which are lined with traps that are designed for the sole purpose of making your life exceedingly DIFFICULT (ironically, the most safe chute is the one that shoots missiles at you, while the Chute Crab chute makes experienced players have Nam-style flashbacks to that scene from 'Aliens' where the soldiers are shrieking, 'They're coming outta the walls! THEGODDAMNED WALL---AAARRRGHHHH!' and has killed many before they even hit the slime-coated bottom). 2.) Golgotha, according to the lore, was a Biohazardous Waste Disposal Plant, meaning that trudging through it for any length of time has a very high 85-to-95% chance of afflicting you with a multitude of nasty diseases, including the infamous 'Glotrot,' where your tongue swells, bleeds, and eventually necrotizes and plops out of your mouth, leaving you completely mute unless you have an ubernostrum injector to regenerate your tongue, or if you're a psychic who uses Telepathy to speak mainly (in which case it's not all that bad...not good, but certainly manageable). 3.) Because of its industrialized nature, the area is full of high speed conveyer belt lines which, aside from being a speedy mode of transportation for you, also launches deadly objects (namely Laser Turrets and the aforementioned Chute Crabs) towards you at high speeds from all angles. and 4.) the area is crawling with some of the most dangerous and unpredictable enemies in the game, crammed into this claustrophobic slice of hell under Qud, such as Glow Wight Cultists of Agolgut (basically humans who've bathed in toxic sludge and eaten Girshlings out of reverence for their god and mutated into the unholy bastard spawn of Nurgle and the Glowing Ghouls from Fallout), Girsh (insectoid abominations so mutated and disease-laden, it's no longer clear WHAT they used to be, just a pile of cysts, tongues, and mandibles where there oughtn't be cysts, tongues, and mandibles), Defective Waydroids (robots tossed into the trash millennia ago for being both highly aggressive and blowing up whenever they were low on health, as they do to you in a kind of 'I'm Taking You Down With Me' maneuver), and a unique Giant Slug enemy in the deepest and most slimy section of the polluted facility called Slog of the Cloaca, who spits pressurized streams of acid at you for disturbing their nap. This place is the literal definitions of 'Everything Trying to Kill You' and 'RNG Hates Me!'

Weird. Sure I died a couple of times while trying to get to the Golgotha entry chutes to beastmen, and a couple of times to traps, but when I made it to the very bottom of the structure, I completed the quest, looted stuff, didn't get infected and managed to get back to the surface without much hassle. It was mainly the beastmen that screwed me over a lot.

@@nerdiboy5128 Don't remember, as it was so long ago. But I do remember having multitudes of gadgets and long-ranged weapons as per my tinkerer skill, perhaps that helped?

@@silver1340 Yeah; that definitely would. Equipping a vinewood sap mask, or even better, a gas mask would offer resistance (though not complete immunity) to the toxins in that hellhole. Plus, having modified armor and weapons CAN turn the tide. If you played True Kin and had the Bionic Liver augmentation, you'd be completely immune to all diseases and poisons (though other players argue that it's waste of body space that could be devoted to other augmentations; individual players have their own style though and what works for others might not for them, so I won't judge). If you were armed to the teeth with grenades, you theoretically could have done massive damage to the horde before they got anywhere near you, as explosives are good for dealing with large crowds of adversaries when accuracy isn't a concern. The main issue would've been the terrain constantly shifting around you because of the conveyer belts, the tight corridors, and small rooms making avoiding enemies difficult, even with a high DV score. Based on the horror stories that more seasoned players told me, and to paraphrase Sean Bean as Boromir: "One does not simply walk into Golgotha, and expect to come out of it completely unscathed." I mean you probably could, but the amount of times you'd die, and the frustration of having start over and over, regardless of how well you've prepared for it would've driven average players up-the-wall-batshit-insane. No plan survives first contact, after all. And Golgotha is the current poster child of RNG hell. So you were either exceedingly lucky or exceedingly patient. Because most visitors to Golgotha *AREN'T* lucky.

The game takes place in a post apocalyptic distant future. So yes, it's a partially stone age, partially transhumanist cyberpunk setting.

As for Qud itself, it's mostly aboveground; but in true old-school RPG fashion, you can find a hole in the ground and stairs, that let you descend strata by strata into deeper and darker caves, which require that you bring torches even during the day (because you're... in a CAVE), or have the Night-Vision Mutation/ Cybernetic Augment. A word of caution though: just as with vintage RPGs, the further down you venture, the tougher enemies become, leading to previously low-level threats like Snapjaw Scavengers and Brutes (this game's equivalent of the hyenamen Gnolls from Dungeons and Dragons) evolving into much more intimidating Snapjaw Howlers, Trappers, and Spearfiends. So it can be assumed that the area you start off in is aboveground, with a sky of blue, yellow sun, and pale moon and stars at night, but you CAN descend into Caves which are tougher versions of topside areas, essentially high-tier dungeons.

This is a sci-fi game set in the far future where an advanced human civilization had crumbled and now the world is controlled by primitive alien mutants and the remnants of post-apocalyptical humanity on an alien world. It's named Caved of Qud because you will spend the vast majority of your time in said caves.

So about the General Grevious analogy. You can be that and more. On one character. If you pick the 'Chimera' morphotype, you will rapidly start to grow extra limbs and other body parts even without spending mutation points on getting multiple arms. And they can appear anywhere. I once had a character who had a face grow out of his newly grown venomous tail and more arms than a Hindu deity. He was such a genetic disaster that he could no longer even wear armor, hats or even shoes at some point because I had given him hooks for feet at the beginning of the game. Upside is that because my character was skilled in axes and short blades so it all worked togheter to turn him into a whirlwind of butchery, limb-removing destruction that-assumg he didn't chop you to tiny pieces immediatly- could peck at you with his beak, gore you with his horns and sting at you with his tail. AND he could regenerate his own lost body parts. Even his extra heads. Never had to worry about being decapitated and instantly dying again. Long story short: I essentialy became Godrick the Grafted from Elden Ring combined with a Resident Evil final boss and then some. Just absolute body horror.

this game is a random generated version of the old "Gamma World" setting for AD&D. a great war ended civilization, mutants and pure strain humans roam the post apocalypse lands, contending with groups and secret societies, discovering ancient technologies, mutating for powers, fighting monsters and robots, etc.
