"Pearl" was (and still is) a complete masterpiece, but "Half Moon" and "Move Over" will always be my favorite two tracks from the album. Bought my first copy (on 8-track tape) when it was first released, and if I had 10 bucks for every time I've listened to it since then, I'd probably be a millionaire today.

@Don X The guitarist seems more rhythm, playing the solo out of the rhythm. They are, also, probably, playing in the morning or early afternoon, which musicians who are used to playing at night, sometimes, find awkward. ~They played a concert the night before. They are playing for a tv audience, so toned down. Hendrix's band on Cavett was similar. One should, also, consider that they are more of a backing/studio band, there to emphasis Janis, that it is in a style that was not that old at the time, is a band that had not been together that long, but yes, they seem a bit constrained, more of a "demo" feel. Yet, if listened to closely, there is quite a bit of subtlety, there. Steve Gaines' solo album recorded five years later has the same reminiscence of feel & sound, & this is almost certainly an influence on that. If she hadn't died two months later, I am sure that there would be punchier versions around. As a not perfect, & live, version, it stands up to a lot of modern music pretty well. It would be nice to hear something like this coming out, to~day. It has a lot of soul.

JJ had it all: talent, moves, an ungodly voice, and more than anyone other than the early Elvis-passion! So far, throughout music history, there has been only one person to get close to her, and that's Beth Hart. But she comes in a distant second on the moves and passion.
@jbooks8884 жыл бұрын
I have to agree, but rather than ungoldy voice I would say she had a heavenly voice.
@lillybloom15904 жыл бұрын
@@jbooks888 That probably fits better, Jbook, because JJ made her bones singing and playing in her church choir growing up. She learned polytonals there, and every now and then pops one in her lyrics for us. Otherwise, about the only place you can hear those treasures are in European Choirs. However, at the end of this amazing piece, you will hear not only polyrhythms - but polytonals. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIbZqYWgjtade7M

This in the lexicon of the Dick Cavett show is one of the premier performances. She nails it knowing she has 3-4 minutes. I agree with Winston below a lot of viewers won't know Guitar is John Hall of Hall and Oates in his early days in fact Hall and his wife Joanna wrote this song.
@tovarisch2788 Жыл бұрын
NOT of Hall and Oates. Of Orleans. Hall and Oates is Daryl Hall (no relation) and John Oates. And he (Hall) is NOT playing here. This guitarist is John Till.

I find it weird that Janis performed "Half Moon", a song from Pearl in which the album wasn't released yet. I think people in the audience didn't know this was a new song from her. Nowadays, when an artist performs a new song from an upcoming album, people go crazy and a lot of expectation arises. I guess at that time, any artist could perform whatever song they want regardless whether it was new. Love Janis
