I mean if the witness wins, she loses. Its a common trope for mortal enemies to put aside their difference if something even worse is happening (examples from other games include Super Mario RPG, World of Warcraft, that one scene in halo where the flood teamed up with us for 2 minutes to stop the prophet of truth from firing all the halo arrays, and more). Savathun is an especially weird case though, because they very well could have decided to write her as a deliberately antagonistic ally that no one actually believes because of her past. I mean look at what she has done since ditching her worm: - Attempted to seal the traveller away from the witness to stop him enacting the final shape - Sealed away Rhulk, preventing the Witness from using his greatest weapon - Provided access to the traveller through the 15th wish - Got the shit beaten out of her by saint 14 over and over again - Sent lightbearing hive to infiltrate the pale heart by stowing away on the black fleet (Luzaku), who she is actually proud of (Look up the interaction between the 2) - Brought to our attention there were veins of light that could only be accessed through the ascendent plane (which Mara uncovers during the Excission fight) Basically everything has been with the sole purpose of stopping the witness, regardless of cost. Granted some of these would have been disastrous for humanity (especially point 1), but if Bungie decided to not make Savathun an antagonist anymore, I actually wouldn't be surprised at all.

The day before the finale, I was listening to his messages from the Ace of Spades mission because I had some feeling that Cayde would sacrifice himself. Hearing him directly say "You're my favorite" cut like a knife though. Even if I saw it coming I had to mentally process what happened before getting in my car and going for a drive to think. Only to cry a bit into it while listening to Deep Stone Lullaby. Bungie did a great job wrapping this saga up with one hell of a tearjerking ending.

Although it was foreshadowed. 1: He was brought back to life via a wish dragon. Him not staying alive for long likely could have been the twist. 2: The Ghost has said that Cayde's Light was similar to that of a Ghost. Meaning he likely could do some of the same things Ghosts can, like bringing back the worthy dead back to life* and the Ghost did sacrifice himself to kill the Witness. *This likely means that Cayde would have been able to do the same with any Ghost that sacrificed itself, like Targe or Sagira. At least, as long as there was something remaining of them.
