I recently found your channel and am enjoying the enthusiasm you show in your videos. I'm wondering if you can share a bit about your wine preference. Would you say you tend to prefer younger, fresher wines with lots of primary fruit to older wines that are more savory? I think a lot of the disagreement surrounding wines like Caymus stems from a difference in preference for terroir vs. a flavor profile. I feel that Caymus prioritizes achieving a certain flavor profile (big ripe fruits, lots of oak, low tannins) with each release, and the brand has been successful at hitting that target each year. People who like those flavors are drawn to it. The downside is that by striving for a consistent flavor profile, there is not as strong a sense of place or terrior to the wine, and people who look for that sense of place strongly dislike Caymus. I have enjoyed Caymus when I have tried it before. As I have gotten more into wine, though, I have found I prefer wines with more savory flavors vs. lots of oak and big fruity flavors. Because of this, to me Caymus is too expensive for what it is, and I have never bought it for myself (I certainly won't say no, though, if it's available at a party, business dinner, etc.).

Very true. More experienced wine drinkers tend to be less impressed with Caymus that taste the same every year.

in Jan 2023, i had a 2014 and it was wonderful. THe aging process seemed to tame the fruit forward of the more recent ones. at least for my palette. no smoke/fire taint worries for the 2020?

No, Caymus sources from 14 vineyards in Napa and relied more in 2020 on the Southern vineyards where there was no fire.

I love your show as always. Caymus is also my “go to” favorite. I have had many bottles of the 2020, and I totally agree with you. I hope you eventually test Nickel & Nickel which I think will impress you. Thanks for your regular weekly shows. It’s a wonderful thing you are doing.

Thanks so much Greg! I love Nickel and Nickel. Reviewed it in one of my early shows 3 years ago. Also, you will find live scenes from the winery in my Napa visit video.

out of all caymus..the best is the 2012 40th annversary...and 2013 also.... for the SS I had tried 2007 2009 2010 and 2012 2013 2015...The 09 10 12 was the best in my opinion....
