Railway Memories - Lancaster Green Ayre

Lancaster Green Ayre station and the line between Wennington and Morecambe via Green Ayre closed in 1966, as part of the Beeching cuts.
"Railway Memories" features interviews with a number of men who worked on the line - sharing their stories of what it was like to work on the railways during the period from the 1940s-1960s.
Rev. Bob Jackson is also interviewed - he had a unique friendship with a number of people who worked on the railway and filmed the line between Morecambe and Lancaster on its last day of operation on 1st January 1966.
Featuring cine footage filmed by Rev. Bob Jackson and Peter Jones.
This film was made with Morecambe Bay Movie Makers, as part of the event 'Green Ayre Rises' (01-02 May 2016).

Good to hear a local accent again. I was born next t the line up to Castle Station in 1943. Next to the footbridge at 3 Vicarage Lane. I moved away in 1968 for a change of career. I'm now retired and living in S/Wales so handy for Canton etc and Newport Docks. ( where I've videoed all the 66/67 arrival from 1998 - 2016

Excellent recall of a missed station. Great to hear from these retired railwaymen who certainly did not have it easy. However, they clearly enjoyed their careers and the comradeship.

Grand to see this at the Green Ayre exhibition in Lancaster this afternoon. I worked with a couple of these fantastic lads in the 80s so brilliant to see them around and documenting the area. More please.

I worked with a good number of these fine men during the 1980's at Carnforth, & to see this superb documentary brings back many priceless memories - thank you so much for making this fantastic film, & I would dearly love to see more. There are at least 3 of us still flying the 10A flag - one each at Skipton, Manchester Piccadilly, & Manchester Victoria. Gentlemen, I salute you one & all, & I will always remember 10A as the happiest days of my life.

What a wonderful introduction. Much of what’s wrong with people “out of work” today who don’t push themselves forward and more importantly, arguably, the reluctance of employers to take the people on who want to work, instead of those who can “pass exams” but have no interest in the work itself nor the common sense to accept what they’re told to do!

Excellent video, and quite emotional for me in seeing Jack Monks again what a true gent! I worked with Jack when he transferred to Newton Heath 9D, I was his fireman in No: 6 Freight Link. His voice has hardly changed I've compared him to a photo he gave me and he's hardly altered. The photo I have treasured to this day. Would love to shake his hand again.
