The RCMP's Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) was handed over to the Canadian military on April 1, 1993.
SERT was a paramilitary unit created by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1986 to respond to terrorist incidents, particularly involving hostage rescue or other high-risk operations. The transfer occurred due to a government decision to consolidate national counterterrorism responsibilities under the Canadian Forces. Following the transfer, the Canadian military's Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2) was established to take on these specialized roles. JTF2 continues to function as Canada's primary special operations force.
