If they have to resort to threatening him or a public broadcaster for producing and airing any segment that may reveal the irony of a privileged career politician talking down to others while claiming to represent "ordinary Canadians" (whatever that's supposed to mean), then not only the joke went over their heads but it gives the impression that they don't really believe in the very rights and freedoms they claim to cherrish and take for granted.

Situations where young people go straight into politics as their career OR where other people stall elections for financial benefit are both examples of why it shouldn't work that way. It's funny when people don't see what's actually at play. It's not the mere fact of anyone qualifying for a pension, it's the fact that Jagmeet Singh qualifying for his allegedly would drastically change his politics, and his support for the PM. The point is that he's only in it for the money. But I think you know that and just want to sound smart. At least I hope you do. Because then you'd really be missing the point. This video by Mercer was meant to deflate (Conservative) parliamentarians in general, when compared to the average working person, by pointing out that a particularly young one, at 31-y/o, already qualified while the rest of Canadians slave away until 65. But literally all MPs have this perk, so any point against PP is completely moot. Part of the humour in this video was that he's just a "nobody", a random MP you haven't even heard of.

The "we reached out to people he worked with in the past" wasn't a serious line. I understand the joke that Rick was attempting to make, though. My IQ isn't 50. Mercer mixes his political commentary with jokes. Kind of like how gullible Americans think that John Oliver is actually delivering essays and news articles instead of hyperbolic, partisan opinion pieces.

In that time he still has not accomplished anything, and does not do anything for his constituents. Trust me, I am one and I have yet to find in our riding that he has done anything to help. to be fair, I think his point is not that Jagmeet doesn't deserve a pension (which would be a double standard). His point is that Jagmeet is making policy decisions, like delaying his non-confidence vote against Trudeau, in order to qualify for his pension. It's a weird situation that the leader of a party has been an MP for less than 6 years. The skit is making fun of Pierre for getting his pension so early, but if the minimum time in parliament was longer, like 20 years instead, we would have the NDP problem more frequently. As long as party leaders have a secure pension, they are less likely to be influenced by that.

@@Eric79-f7i a surgeon was a doctor first, and then specialized. A mechanic starts with an apprenticeship. Why do they do this? The same reason a politician needs to work some other form of public service to be a better politician - a broader understanding is important to these important jobs. Nobody becomes a surgeon straight out of high school.

A doctor did an undergrad and then went to medical school, and then started at the bottom of the ladder, slowly becoming a specialized expert in their chosen field of medicine. Most effective politicians come from a background in business or academia, gaining life experience and education before entering politics. You've made a terrible analogy.

@@kirkoconnell --- no emations in any way. i'm indoctrinated to any political party. pierre is a graduate and has earned his degree - in todays climate - big deal. justin did work as a teacher - however he didn't do this for long and it was only ever part time. most of justins career is dotted with ski instructor and surfer. --- one other thing.... justin took 6 years to finsish his bachelor whiich is a 3 yr course load - and he graduated without honors. ----- but all these things aside we need to look at the questionable and bizarre decisions justin has made. his economic policies that i do not support - his climate action plan via taxing i do not support, i prefer tha conservatives pland on climate better. will pierre be a good PM? dunno.... but we do know justin is terrible.
