It so easy for us to pass our remarks.. you need to sit down with a person and really know them over a process of many many meetings and discussions, one thing is for sure he did not plan for those poor people who lost their lives to end up like that or for those who were injured and traumatised.. yes he made mistakes and yes maybe he did lose his nerves and got frightened and confused.. and yes he took vowels to be last of the ship, but when push comes to shove a number of other scenarios can play out just because he was named captain he was like all of us a human first with all the human faults that we possess.. it’s ok to point a finger at others when they get it wrong but just remember to point the other three at yourself when you also get things wrong, but we know when it’s us we like to also look for excuses and wiggle our way out of it, we humans have so much hypocritical and double standards within ourselves..

@@Silkroads733 I understand what you are telling. But i dont agree with you at all, that he was like all of us before accident. And from now i relate him to seamans. He was not like all of us before katastrophe simply, becouse non of us is drunk with a woman when ship is in the stage of departing....verry few of us will be willing to do this in that risky few hours, especially not on the big cruser ship........6-7 hours after departure, maybe yes??? Yes we all do stupid thing. But not on most dengerous stage of trip......So, this one is a true phenomenon. Guy who was the best in his class at school, but in reality a coward and gambler with lifes in his hart......one of the worst.... And court saw this. He is not some caind of escape goat. @@Silkroads733 No, I don't think that's uquite accurate. Of course, people depict Schettino as a sort of caricature, and while it seems like he had at least some amount of guilt (as it's reported that he cried in the arms of the chaplain after leaving the ship), this doesn't excuse his behavior in the slightest. Schettino didn't abandon ship after an accident made him panic. He abandoned ship after executing a risky maneuver, with his third in command not playing her part in the process, showing a disregard for safety. He ordered the crew to lie to the passengers about the situation, which led to more deaths. And he lied to the media after he came back on shore, about having been the last to leave. Of course, all of us can be cowards, all of us can be irresponsible. But this is exactly why everyone isn't a ship captain. A ship captain should never behave like this. He should be selected for his ability to constantly remain calm, even in the most dire situation, as well as a constitution that would avoid him taking unnecessary risks as Schettino did that one night.

The worst was when he was told to go back over the radio the coast guard told him there were dead people in the sea and his response to that was to ask how many dead people. Why would that matter? The reason why he asked that specifically was because he felt the rope getting tight around his neck. So he didn't care about his passangers and thought the situation would resolve itself, when he realized there would be tragedy he wanted to know the number of deaths that he was supposed to be knowing in the first place, had he been there. That shows how egocentric he was, even in that situation all he could think about was himself.

I did a cruise on the "Costa Concordia" a few years before its last cruise - same captain - same route. A beautiful ship, but safety was definitely not a high priority. Our first drill was well into the second day on board. Passengers were asked to report to different areas (concert halls, dining rooms, etc) to listen to announcements, which were repeated in six or seven languages. There was mass confusion. People were talking, especially when forced to listen to a language that they did not understand. Because of the noise, I understood nothing! Knowing what I know now, that there was a serious accident and loss of life, comes as no surprise. This guy lacked any organizational skills. Struck me as a party animal. He shouldn't have been allowed to paddle a canoe, much less be in charge of a cruise ship.

That is awful. Wow, and to think it sunk on the first day of that trip, right? Horrible, poor people. I have to say though, about the announcements in 6/7 languages, is it really his fault though? I mean what else could have been done in that aspect? It may be inconvenient, but as long as you also get to listen to them in a language you understand, if you (not _you_ per se, a general you) talk loudly over the announcements in other languages, it just means you're selfish or don't at all think about the potential gravity of the situation if a problem does indeed arise.

I know it's been a while, but after swiping the rocky outctopping, the ship quickly lost all helm control and veered out into deeper water for a little bit, righting itself as the flooded balast tanks evened out underneath. After a few minutes, the wind pushed the ship back into shallow water where it grounded and tipped into its final resting place. I call this out so there is no misunderstanding that coming to rest in shallow waters was in any way an intentional action by a competent captain/crew - it was not.

Under no circumstances the captain leaves the ship when there is an emergency!!! None!! This proves you had no training at all and you and your staff didn't performed any security drills in case of emergency. Now you're trying what exactly? To save your fame?

What the Coast Guard Captain was saying was , "Act like a Captain." Stop making excuses that you couldn't do anything because all these other people were telling you what could or couldn't be done. Get on the ship - order other people around, make the decision. Stop making excuses and blaming others for why you didn't go back on board. A coward and disgrace to men.

This captain came pre-greased, the perfect slimeball. The Coastguard Captain read him more like a child's comic than a book. He was concise and clear with his orders to his now subordinate, due to abandoning his post, considering what was happening and showed discipline at a time when lesser men, like the abandoning captain, fall at the first step. He got sixteen years in prison for his stupidity and lack of care for anyone other than himself. He deserved a far longer sentence, he got off lucky. For him that means really that he won, remember, he is the real victim as far as he is concerned. I hope his ability to return to the sea is sine die.

As Italian I would like to better explain to everybody here what is really occurred on that night, since I read several books about this story, I listened the whole black box, I exanimated all the ship details in order to understand what was going on and why...I will list some short confirmed information both about the Captain Schettino and the Costa Concordia: - The naval route planned from Civitavecchia by the Captain was not applied by the Captain-in second since the ship was out of his route already when the Captain reached the bridge at 9:34 pm and he did not expect this scenario (he took the ship control only at 9:39 pm). - When the ship was very close to the rocks the Captain was the only one that saw them in the sea, neither the Captain-in second and the others officers (that were looking on the radar screen) noted the rocks (it seems incredible but this is the reality...). - At this time the Captain commanded to the helmsman to do the following, to veer on the right to avoid the direct impact on the rocks (in order to save the prow) then to veer on the left in order to save the stern. Unfortunately the last action was not executed and the helmsman veered on the right again, causing the impact to the rocks. It was not recognized immediately by the Captain because the helmsman confirmed (by voice) to veer on the left but in reality (checking the black box) he veered on the right. - It has been demonstrated by the University of Pisa (using the same software used in the nautical systems) that if the helmsman did what the Captain Schettino required, the ship did not impact on the rocks. In the worst case only some very small damage could be caused at the end of the stern. - At this time there were several communications between the Captain and the other members working in the lower side of the ship (motor room etc.) and the situation about what was really occurred was not clear at the bridge, it caused a long delay before confirming the emergency to the passengers at first and also to the rescue teams. - Several safety equipment did not work at this time, about 10 persons died inside the elevators because the emergency generators did not work at all due to some malfunctions. - The Captain get off from the ship when the ship was almost completely tilted already and the level 3 (when he was at that moment) was close to the water, the Captain jumped in the last lifeboat available. - Nobody on the bridge had the right feeling about what was really happening. Listening all the conversations from the black box, only when it was confirmed at the 100% that all the 6 motors were died, all the emergency pumps did not work at all (it means the ship was unrecoverable), the Captain decided to wait to throw the anchors until the ship was as much as possible close to the coast. - Before speaking with Mr. De Falco (the guy become popular after the phone conversation with Captain Schettino) the Captain spoke with Mr. Leopoldo Manna, both in a very professional way without any misunderstanding. Mr Manna let Captain Schettino speaking and explaining the situation without blaming him, and he understood immediately how the situation was, not like Mr De Falco that did not understand which side of the ship was really submerged... - The bridge officers team was very young, some of them at the first experience, same as the helmsman that was working on that position since 20 days only - It has been confirmed that the watertight did not work at all and it caused a flooding of the near watertight compartments. If the watertight compartments worked fine the ship did not sink at all, it has been clearly demonstrated. Thanks for reading.

@@sanisacse6577 he was obliged to leave the ship on that moment since it was collapsing on its right side, he helped the latest lifeboats to get off from their hooks (the ship was pushing down the lifeboats hooks to the lifeboats itself because of its tilting). Maybe he could tried to walk back into the ship but I don't know if it was possible, the ship was tilted over 30° on that moment. Only about 100/150 people were still on the ship, leaving it already from the left side. He left the ship only at the moment when all the lifeboats left the ship, don't forget it!

Schettino did not abandon the ship, he was forced to jump onto the roof of the last lifeboat lowered to starboard, as one of the towing arms had caught it while the ship was about to overturn to starboard. His only alternative was to jump into the water, letting over fifty castaways suffer their fate by being crushed by the weight of the ship. Gregorio De Falco knew that at 00:17 local time, the ship was crashing on its side, but instead of sending help as it should have done, he continued to rage on Commander Schettino to tell him everything he already knew. On the phone call at 01:42 which ended at 01:46 local time, De Falco no longer had the authority to give orders and manage the rescue as at 01:12 local time, the Captain Leopoldo Manna took command, competent for the territory and superior of Gregorio De Falco. 23 deaths are the fault of Gregorio De Falco's negligence, while 9 are the fault of false tests carried out. The elevator doors opened without the cabin on the floor, as a result of which 9 people died falling into the elevator shaft where they were found a few days later. Without Schettino the dead would have been many more, without De Falco the dead would have been fewer. These are real facts with lots of documentation to prove them
