…when the rent for a typical two bedroom apartment in the major cities are averaging $2500-$3000 per month…no wonder why folks are seeking that helping hands.

Excessive rents have hit the small towns too. Food costs are a distraction. A typical household spends roughly 15% of its income on food. Shelter is routinely costing 40% now. When I was starting out in the 1990s housing was roughly 30% of my budget. In the 1950s and 1960s shelter was just 20%. Housing cost has been a problem since the early 2000s, increasing 5-10 times faster than inflation. This has been a two-decade failure of government and capitalism that should result in wholesale change. My solution: levy a 5% tax on ALL property. All the revenue thus derived be used to build high-density, mixed-use housing/retail/office to replace single-family detached housing. All new building to conform with Passive House standards. Keep the 5% tax and keep building until all the speculators have buggered off. Housing is an absolute necessity and must never have been allowed to become a speculators game.

Why doesn't mainstream media like CBC etc, do journalism, and get into the root causes. Multi nationals retailers, fast food multinationals ,and similar who are recording, MASSIVE PROFITS... BUT REFUSE TO PAY LIVING WAGES, resulting In food banks. And the Canadian tax payers, that includes those who go to food banks. Canadian/ Ontario tax payers are making up for these Corporations who won't pay living wages, by donating their spare dollars and profiting corporations getting hand outs from tax payers. Time to get corporations to pay living wages, and close the gap from the extreme wealthy corporations who pay nothing. .

I've been at points where I've had to use food banks (neighbor2neighbor literally saved my life) and points where I've had extra to donate. As guilty as you may feel using a food bank, you can feel just as good helping a food bank when they need it.
@CarFreeSegnitz
@CarFreeSegnitz Жыл бұрын
You should not feel guilty for needing to use a food bank. You should feel outrage at the system which creates the necessity of food banks. Food banks are actually a terrible way to feed people. The only thing they can give you is near-dated product or produce that should have been composted long ago. We already have an optimized food distribution system: grocery stores. We should be giving those in need either straight-up cash or coupons to get what they need from grocery stores. Food banks spend fuel and labour collecting discards to a central location forcing the needy to travel to get help. Two hurdles are created where a single trip would have sufficed. Food banks do create a screen behind which capitalism can carry on terrible practices. Greedy landlords can say “go to the food bank” while jacking up the rent. Employers can pay sub-living wages with “go to the food bank”. Politicians can claim compassion because “they support the food bank”. Greedy corporations get license by donating product or money to the food bank.

Grocery stores could do more BUT they are not the cause of the affordability crisis. It is ballooning housing cost. Food is typically 15% of a household budget. Housing is often 40% of a household budget. There was a time when housing was 20% of a minimum wage worker’s income.

Its happening everwhere in Canada and still the Trudeau government just during pandemic increased immigration to over 400000 a year without the infrastructure in place to deal with increase and most are not finding work. I understand taking in refugees. But these people dont have jobs lined up and in the last few years is an increase of over 1.3 milliom people to canada. Also the food banks have been taking monitary donations to buy food but to be considered non profit in canada you only have to give 25 cents of every dollar given to your cause. So how much money are they being given compared to food bought. Please give food not money!

So you want big corporations like Amazon and Apple that people rely on to pay extra. You know what will happen next don’t you??? The vast majority of those jobs will flee to another country with lower taxes and lower wages since they will get more revenue which therefore means more jobs. In other words: You cannot have a plan to tackle the affordability crisis if you don’t have a plan that creates jobs. However I will give you the fact that corporations like the cbc should not receive massive revenues from the Trudeau Liberal government since they don’t use our hard-earned money for any necessity other than be his multi-national propaganda arm. That is unacceptable and they should be defunded if that’s the case.

@@ebrahimfawad940 your idiotic logic of true conservativism is outstanding but not surprising. The American Corporations you mention and support. Let me explain, but already knowing your comprehension issue. Your beloved Apple Corporation produces all their products overseas. Your Apple store is your outlet that sells to you and your type, and pays a none living wages to their teenage workers. Then these teenage workers, who can't afford to leave home,and when they do share accommodation with five others. Then they can look forward to food banks. So fools like you can quote conservative pesuedo economic theories 🤣. As for the American corporation Amazon. This will be difficult for you to comprehend. They don't pay taxes in Canada or the USA, in Canada they wouldn't be in business if they didn't have the retail outlet in this country. Just simple economics. All of Amazon products are from overseas, resulting in jobs elsewhere, do get that. American corporations take money out of Canada in exchange for non-livable wages being the biggest profiteers IN THE WORLD. This is known throughout history as IMPERIALISM. Only neoconservatives. like you would be missing an apple retail store or Amazon. I buy from neither. I agree CBC has become an outlet for right wing conservative propaganda. Perhaps an Albertan like yourself would rather Fox, another American propaganda outlet. You got that Ebrahim, keep your Americana in america.

@@wavelength7503 😂😂😂 Nice Liberal/NDP bootlicking. First of all. I’m pretty sure you never bothered reading my comment so don’t jump 100 steps ahead and judge my comprehension. Second of all, While Apple produces their products overseas, keep in mind that a proprietary proportion of their tax revenue come from Canada and the Liberals. Not only that but it can’t be possible that corporations don’t pay taxes. Else they cannot provide their shareholders with the same amount of reductions. Even your best friend Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi agree with this theory. So don’t try to slam my economic theories, it’s unfortunate that the majority of Canadians don’t make up you morally corrupt Torontonians and Montrealers that think it’s wise to grow an economy by making corporations pay more so that they scare jobs away. You don’t have to get mad at me just for getting the facts straight. You scandal plagued Radical-left Neoliberals and Paleoliberals that they have literally made the largest debt than all previous Prime Ministers combined. And no I’m not from America or Alberta. The bottom line is that Liberalism and Socialism just doesn’t work in anything you might think of. Rather than judging the book by its cover I want you to take a look at other socialist countries like Venezuela. Just look at how much money they’ve spent and the size of their debt. And you wanna talk about teenage workers?? How about checking out Vancouver where they have the highest gas prices in North America. The highest housing bubble than NYC and Chicago with a tripled population. Well guess what. Certainly not like you would care but the people of Vancouver spoke up in the recent election and FIRED that incompetent radical woke-left wing NDP mayor. Every province in Canada is cutting their gas taxes and during the 2008 recession when these so called “Albertan Conservatives were in power they banned the Bank of Canada from raising interest rates and kept taxes and GST low. You Lefties also seem to be less educated people since you never answer questions and flip flop from the actual topic. You wanna talk about Propaganda you Left-Wave Length 😂??? Look in the Mirror. You sure sound like a tough cookie. I bet Spendmeet Singh and TrickledTrudeau and their chronies at cbc aka their propaganda arm who are all about to go down in flames in the next election just like that NDP mayor of Vancouver, I bet all of them would appreciate you taking their side with your lies and conspiracy theories to avoid the facts and reality. So no need to mislead people in the KZbin comments section just to spread misinformation on your radical far-left ideologies. At least do it to save your image as you will look like a fool here when you type such things. 😂😂😂😂😂 I’m actually surprised😂😂 That’s your reasoning to defend Trudeau, Singh and Biden’s woke-left socialist agenda??? I actually laughed😂😂😂😂

@@ebrahimfawad940 Under normal circumstances, and if a were communicating with a sound mind. I would prolong my conversation. But unfortunately reading your sick and demented theories, and the lack of social development on how to not keep a society functioning. It is not worth the time spent reading or answering. The extreme conservatism you display, is a sickness. Not a political choice. Yes conservatives will get voted back in, it's how the political system has been running for decades, and conservatives will drag the country to near bankruptcy, and the liberals will get voted back in to repair it. As I said ,I'll reiterate. You're issue of comprehension as well as misunderstanding of words. To explain Neoliberalism, it is something that you have been preaching" Corporations are your God, and should run our elections,and" elected " politicians, and keep the voters in the kneeling position ,and take the hand outs they will allow them" . No longer interested in the irony in your twisted logic, and mumbling you have to offer. You will be talking to yourself from here on. You sound like a cliche, with robotic tendencies. Can you not come up with thoughts, ideas of your own. Stay off Fox CNN etc. Yup! you are the extreme of the far right conservative/ Republican mind. I'm surprised you haven't waved your Confederate flag, Trump flag, swastika flags, and stars & strips. You know ! Like your extreme, Oath keepers, 3 percenters, proud boys, "freedom" convoy etc But I do understand neocons justify twisted logic. Itv makes sense to a neocon, that American multinationals in Canada should pay none livable wages, so they can take all their profits home. It's ironic how the extreme right like you have a problem with democracy and the majority rule, as the majority of Canada are in Ontario Quebec. It's so sad you know nothing about the places you mention, or I doubt ever been. To compare Vancouver Canada real estate to Manhattan, is a west coast ego fulfilment. I have many friends in Manhattan, and know the cost of living very well. As well as I know Vancouver BC as I have lived all over Canada, and know the mentality of jealous/ bigotry of right wing canuckers, because they have difficulty figuring out what the meaning is of being Canadian, besides being patriotic to the USA. I guess it must hurt that the NDP led the province of BC. Go cry somewhere else. 😂😂😂😂

There’s lots of openings for the same low pay jobs … they will work wherever… fields and fast food shops.. Thank the Lord they do, so we can get our Ice Capps and burgers and fries.

At lower prices, because you're not prepared to pay higher prices had you been served by Canadians.

They should let all people use food banks regardless of income.

@Itchicus Scrotumus This is happening in Ontario as well. I contributed cases of tuna and peanut butter to an organization who helps the needy. I couldn't believe what I saw too: A brand new Mercedes-Benz with a carload of children going to the food bank. Really! ????

@@bnice8940 I'm thankful for what I have and the position I'm in and want to help the less fortunate. But my concern about donating to the food bank, how can you be sure it's going to the people that really need it.

I volunteered at one before. I now for a fact people use food banks that don't need to. I also know for a fact people who volunteer take foods as payment and horde good or expensive items. Food Bank BS
