CBCT in Action: Airway Analysis

For patients who present with dental pain accompanied by chronic sinus pain, headaches, fatigue or breathing disorders, such as asthma, an airway analysis may be in order. A full analysis of the upper airway - from the nose to the paranasal sinuses to the nasopharynx, oropharynx and hypopharynx - can be facilitated by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging.

Looking at those orthognathic surgery before and after pictures was a bit disappointing. They all look under-advanced to my eye, I think they really could have gained a lot more airway space had they been advanced more. I would be so disappointed and underwhelmed with those results if I were the patient. I’ve seen other before and after CBCT scans where a patient went from having an extremely narrow airway (everything in red and black) to a massive airway where the whole length is in green, so I know it’s possible and a great permanent solution for addressing sleep apnea. Thanks for sharing this presentation, I learned a lot!
