You make such valid points in this. With regards to CBBC in our house, we've always have Freeview TV and only in the last few years gained online streaming services like Disney + and Netflix. For so many families, like mine, having CBBC on accessibly on linear TV was and is so important so it's a shame to hear it'll be going online. Great to hear your thoughts in the video 🥳❤️

I agree that of all of the BBC channels that could have gone, BBC Four seems the most obvious candidate. Personally I'm happy to see that CBeebies looks like it's staying as it's the only channel on Freeview that's demographic is young kids and doesn't do adverts. I wish that CBBC manages to stay but one can only hope!

@Macra You are joking, Separating CBBC to CBBC for older audience and CBeebies for younger audience was the biggest mistake the BBC ever made. The BBC News Channel is a UK Channel and BBC World News Channel is a global channel so it should stay absolutely separated but as for the children's channels, there was absolutely no need to separate Children's BBC and in fact no need to launch the children's channels at all cause the audience would be at School. It was fine as it is in BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Choice and there was absolutely no need for Greg Dyke to rename BBC Choice and BBC Knowledge as Three and Four. But the biggest mistake that Nigel Pickard ever made was axing the corporation's flagship Saturday morning show Live & Kicking and for the corporation to axe it's important shows, like Crimewatch UK, Top of the Pops, Liquid News, Grandstand, Watchdog, XChange Schools Programmes such as Numbertime and Words and Pictures, Working Lunch, Despatch Box, Westminster Live, tomorrow's World, Grange Hill, Byker Grove, Holby City, Generation Game, Big Break, The National Lottery Stars, JetSet and Winning Lines, Parkinson, Whatever You Want and removing it's Australian soap drama Neighbours. Not forgetting the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party That's why the best peak era of the BBC was before 2002, it's gone downhill ever since.

@meridian2000 As someone who grew up with Cbeebies, I have to disagree. I still watched it a couple of years into starting school and I loved having it on in the evenings. And at weekends, all ages are at home so it is good to have something for both. PS The comment you replied to didn't even mention BBC News. Stop copy pasting the same thing on every thread

I'm so passionate about this. Honestly. I'm 23 and I'd rather watch BBC Four. I love it on linear television but you make a good point. My worry is with BBC Four gone, the Commisioned of content like the ones on BBC Four doesn't go with it. I think no channel does a documentary as well as BBC Four, and to lose that content would be a disservice. The attack against television is just the continuation of the the attack on creativity in this country that have been going on for a decade. Public Service Broadcasting is a joy to this country, not a hindarance

Exactly, It really annoys me If all social media died for a day I’d watch BBC Four. It’s content is unique and different Why launch bbc three if your gonna get rid of four Four is arguably more important than three cause not many young adults will be watching stuff like that Linear TV is in our culture and our history and we are trying to get rid of it, it’s wrong

It has been a shadow of its former early 2000s to late 2000s self anyway for years. I believe its content should've been merged into BBC Two (which is how BBC Two was in the 1991+ era anyway) and there should be an online only BBC Archive streaming channel/section. It could even be delivered on Freeview via one of the IPTV slots used by those obscure channels.

The decision to close CBBC and BBC Four makes the decision to bring back BBC Three quite stupid. I think the Red Button should be axed as most Smart TVs don‘t support it anymore. It doesn’t have the charm that it did back in 2007-16 (CBeebies and CBBC minigames anyone?)

I think must be agree. That's no reason to see a separate Cbeebies and CBBC channels. That just a terrible decision by Greg Dyke and Nigel Pickard to separate CBBC department. In addition to merging BBC News and World News channel, CBBC and CBeebies as a linear TV channel should be merge and can carry the former name for combined channels, while keeping these respective channel's content online and intact as well. A merged channel would return CBBC to its former glory prior to split in 2002 when the CBBC (as a block) aired a wide-ranging programme from toddler to teen audiences.

From what I've seen, BBC Four is aimed towards the more older/elderly market. Some older folk may not be able to access digital content (BBC iPlayer) because it's all 'new' and they are more used to television content since it has been around for a long time. Then again, you could teach them how to use this equipment. But, would they even know how to? I'm a bit in the middle, I do agree with the point that people are streaming more nowadays, but I also think that some people may not know how to use this technology because they themselves aren't used to it. I don't know, BBC Four's audience may even reach a younger demographic for all I know. All I can really say is that I am in the middle with the whole situation, mostly because some people are used to new stuff than others because of the demographic of the channel which usually is adults/the elderly.

Something I haven’t seen anyone mention thus far is accessibility options. BBC iPlayer currently only offers *either* subtitles *or* audio description for its shows; there’s no simple method of getting both (short of having two versions of the same programme playing twice in different windows/tabs, but that still requires some way of achieving precise alignment, not to mention a signal that won’t get interrupted mid-show!). Are there any plans to fix this issue, or will people like me who need both accessibility options be simply unable to access the shows any more? (FYI That’s why I still record every show I intend watching: Either so I can have it saved in case I unavoidably miss it, or so I can skip the adverts on non-BBC channels.)

@@onekie5787 Not so. I still need them the same way my dad needs a hearing aid: We can achieve the majority of the activity ourselves; we simply need a little help with the final but we can’t do independently (hearing the occasional soft vowel in his case; identifying who’s speaking in a crowded scene/hearing quieter sections or those covered by louder music in mine). I absolutely do need both, and they definitely were both simultaneously-available options just a few years ago. That’s why it’s so confusing; they actively removed something that really doesn’t take much to keep. They’re always available on all other streaming services (the ones I use, at least!) and home media releases, so why is iPlayer randomly incapable of providing both‽ 🤷‍♂️

If I’m honest, I’m sad to see BBC Four go, but with BBC Three’s removal in 2016, and reinstation this year, I figure BBC Four may be reinstated in the future at some point, but of course, I think there may be an alternative to keep BBC Four on-air. The elephant in the room with linear TV is Freeview. Particularly as the BBC has asked Ofcom to not renew the HD multiplex run by the BBC that the five main channels are on (the other commercial HD multiplex is closing at the end of June at the latest with no warning to viewers as of yet and the BBC's SD multiplex is unaffected) and its licence runs out in 2026, when the BBC plans to move linear channels online. With the mobile phone companies offering amounts the broadcasters could not hope to match for the UHF spectrum and that due to take full effect by the start of the next decade, its probably understandable that the timing of all of this appears coincidental. With the increasing cost of electricity, the cost of upgrading HD broadcasts on Freeview for regionalisation for all the broadcasters and the cost of maintenance, I wonder if Freeview HD is the unmentioned casualty of the BBC cuts that will join BBC Four, CBBC and Radio 4 Extra to move online and whether it will be sooner rather than later?
@1701Wren
@1701Wren 2 жыл бұрын
Freeview I'd say will move to online with the terrestrial spectrum being used for TV & mobile phones together so linear TV will be broadcast online via 5G & normal internet as well Also on Freeview CBBC & BBC 3 share a linear channel that flicks numbers at 05:30 & 18:58. The same applies to BBC 4 & CBeebies as well as their HD channels - to save real money they have to cut not only an evening channel but a daytime one as well. So cutting BBC 4 & CBBC from normal TV saves a channel that they can sell - I'm guessing the BBC want to cut the HD channels from Freeview so they can get more SD channels on that multiplex & get more income 1 PSB HD channel = 4 or 5 or more commercial SD channels that would be worth a fortune if sold whereas if it's fixed as PSB HD, I'm guessing that the price of bandwidth would be set by Ofcom

I used to love BBC Four. In fact, it was the only BBC channel that I used to regularly watch. It had a eclectic mix of informative programming, a bit like BBC 2 used to be. As for CBeebies, basically it’s a pacifier for toddlers. My boy is 5 and watches it on Free row Plus and chooses what he watches. So, if they can use a remote, the don’t need linear TV. The BBC IPlayer is really good in child mode but it was good to have safe CBeebies on linear TV when he was younger. I’m not too bothered about BBC Four as long as I can access the content. To be fair, I don’t mind paying a licence fee for PBS, but begrudge paying for Gary Lineker’s salary to name just one “talent”. There is talk about unlocking more historic content on the IPlayer which are currently restricted for a bizarre reason. What the BBC has on Britbox (which I call sh*tbox), should be on the IPlayer as we’ve paid for it once. That may justify somewhat the tv tax.

CBeebies should go and all of its programmes should move onto the CBBC Channel, in fact CBeebies should never have existed in the first place had it not been for Greg Dyke and Nigel Pickard, I believe an older and younger audience should come together, it's a shame that when younger children reach 6 they stop watching CBeebies and instead go to CBBC where as if it was still merged then they can still watch CBBC and come together to watch it, they can choose not to watch a younger programme when they think they're too old for it and theirs always a tv guide such as RadioTimes to check what time their programme is on or their parents can check when it's on, Now I think of the past successful programmes on the merged CBBC such as Live & Kicking, Blue Peter, Get Your Own Back, Teletubbies, Tweenies, Playdays, Chucklevision and loads more, I just like to think of the past of when CBBC was for all ages of its audience, especially in the Yellow and Black animation era which was my favourite era.

CBeebies doesn’t get touched as it rates consistently high on a regular basis arguably making it one of best watched TV channels outside of the main 5. CBBC’s ratings have always been lower than CBeebies. If they tried to take off CBeebies from linear I’d expect more of an outcry than 6Music. It’s far easier for a parent to put a baby or toddler infront of CBeebies which they can watch for hours on end than an older child who’s attention span isn’t the best.

As I said in a comment on your previous video I think that since CBBC, BBC Four and Radio 4 Extra will be closed in 3 years time, could this be some sort of a way to delay the closure of the channels until after the next GE, hoping that the Conservative Party loses and that Labour (or whoever else will be in Government) give a bit more funds to the BBC so that these closures could be avoided? Because remember when BBC Three's closure was first proposed, it was in 2014 and then it was approved in 2015, but bear in mind that the plan was approved by the BBC Trust after the 2015 GE (provisional approval in June 2015, full approval in November).......I don't know maybe I just wrote complete b******t, but still.......

I do agree that BBC Four should be the one to go, you do mention it, but it is pretty much all archival these days, the original commissions are quite sparse and 'new' content is mostly the foreign dramas they buy in. But I do think that if BBC Four has to go then it only makes sense for either of the children channels to go as well, not that I would want them to, but the same situation as when BBC Three was off air would be applied, as BBC Three and Four share broadcast streams with CBBC and CBeebies, you'd simply have the situation again where (in this case) CBeebies would be technically 24 hours, but probably not broadcasting anything overnight. The low cost nature of BBC Four's archival content means it really doesn't cost much to fill a schedule, the transmission and broadcast probably costs more. Removing two brands means a full 24 hour stream can be closed down, saving on the broadcast costs.

I think I read that smart tv"s have to ship with iplayer installed by default so that'll make it easier for some to get access to online content but, that's assuming they've got high-speed Internet in the first place. Hey BBC, don't mess with TV. That should be the strapline to a national campaign. Think BBC 3 is back on TV Jingle for reasons why.

@NMY556L

@@whatamalike call it a digital communication fee and use it to fund public services of which Internet access should be one. Extend the public service remits of all five broadcasters and regulate this part of their output separately to whatever else they do (even the BBC would have to answer for what it does under this system). This remit would also include children's programming and would mandate that children's programming be accessible to all. The regulations would only apply to BBC1, BBC2, ITV (channel 3) , Channel 4 and Channel 5 and not to any other channels, thus meaning that they can't use their other channels to fudge meeting the minimum requirements. Oh yes we broadcast lots of children's programmes starting at 12 midnight on itv4 ha ha .. that'd not meet minimum standards. Stop allowing tbe BBC to self-regulate and bully people into funding their next pay hike!!!!!! Involve broadband providers and other interested parties in improving broadband connectivity and give incentives to organisations who want to help improve public servuice broadcasting - big fat pay rises for overpaid staf aren't classed as a public services.... but, providing good quality content is. Share resources for the creation of public service content and offset the production costs. News output, coverage of key events are classed as public services for example so why duplicate the work .... just share the production workload and fund it from the central pot.

Having CBeebies on linear TV is also great for parents in other ways. It can help develop patience and allows a broader range of shows (if a kid finds a show they like they can watch it for hours, but if it’s on TV they’ll watch many shows). In can also help develop a sense of time and consistency (“we watch In the Night Garden before bed”), because certain shows are on at certain times. Very important for kids.

I stopped watching linear TV about a decade ago terrestrial TV and believe that in not to distant future we will be back down to fives terrestrial channels as will be increasingly economically unviable to operate an over the air TV station. I think your assessment of moving BBC 4 to iPlayer is a logical and thought it was strange that BBC 3 returned to the air waves.

I feel that BBC Three, CBeebies and CBBC should all stay on TV. The BBC are clearly losing it and the government need to stop these funding cuts! If I were PM, a color TV license would cost £80 a year (£79 cheaper than it currently does), a black & white license £55 a year (£1.50 more than it currently does) and the super rich would each have to pay £5,000 a year for their licenses, regardless whether watching in color or black & white!
