To delve into the origins of the band that gave life to 'Smokie', we trace back to the roots rooted in Bradford, England, where schoolmates Chris Norman, Ron Kelly, and Alan Silson first came together. After several name changes and record deals, Smokie achieved a top-five hit in the UK in July 1975 with the song 'If you think you know how to love me'. Further success followed with 15 top-20 hits, including the nine-week number 1 hit in Germany, 'Living next door to Alice'. The band managed to sell over 30 million records globally. In 1986, Chris Norman started his solo career, and a "new beginning" followed for Smokie with Chris' successor, Alan Barton.
Alan Barton breathed new life into Smokie, leading them to new heights, adding new fans to their already loyal following. However, on March 19, 1995, tragedy struck the band. In terrible weather conditions, the band's bus was involved in an accident after a concert. Alan Barton, lead singer and guitarist, was taken to the hospital in Cologne, where his injuries proved fatal. He lost the battle for life on March 23, 1995, at the age of 42.
On March 27, 2008, a significant event took place. Lifelong friends of Alan Barton - Andy Whelan, Graham Kearns, and Ron Kelly - and members of Alan Silson's band joined Alan Barton's son, Dean, to celebrate Alan's life. For two hours, the audience rocked as Smokie's hits played. At the end of the concert, an audience member remarked, "It almost felt like 'the Spirit of Smokie' was on stage tonight."
And so it begins... 'Spirit of Smokie,' with its impressive legacy, delivers an incredible resemblance to the 'original 70s Smokie,' preserving their tradition and quality.
