Before I got my 2016 a month ago all I heard was seasoned reviewers saying it’s garbage. For someone’s first bike this is more than adequate. It’s comfortable enough to ride for hours and has plenty of power to get around. Plenty of power to get yourself in trouble as well. I’ve gotten triple digits without even realizing it or feeling like the engine was under stress. My tip to any new riders or someone looking into a certain bike is to take the presenter’s bias into consideration. Newer rider/reviewers give this bike praise for what it is. The professional reviewers complain about what it isn’t.

The bike has enough power for everything. Try dropping a gear before over-taking. The people who complain about it not having much passing power don't do that. I mean, what do you expect when you are trying to accelerate hard in your over-drive gear? That's only possible on super bikes because they make a ridiculous amount of power at the top end so you can kind of "cheat" shifting. But this is just a regular sports bike; you WILL have very noticeably less torque when accelerating outside of the bike's efficiency range.

Here in Alberta, Canada the insurance rates for my ZX14 are funny as hell. Since no squids ride this bike and the insurance companies consider this bike more of a touring bike the rates are stupid low. Right now I am down to 500cdn a year. Of course we can't ride all year but hey pretty good anyways. My first bike was 1987 FZ600 which has pretty well the same power as the new 500's. The CBR500R runs mid 13's in the 1/4 mile. That's faster than the average vehicle on the road. Unless you're driving on some preteen's fantasy highway filled with Lamborghini's, McLarens and highly modified GTR's you would have no problems passing anything in front of you.

45HP is where the "forever" bikes start. They have enough power to handle the highways with ease and if they are blessed with comfort and an efficient engine they can be good commuters as well. Anything more powerful is for speed or clout, I have no quarrels with either. My next bike to replace my XSR 125 was supposed to be the Ninja 400, then I decided Ninja 650, then I settled on the upcoming Ninja 500, but now I want the more mature ride that the CBR500R provides, I am turning 50 next year so I guess it would suit me.

Any peasant who says this bike hasn't got enough grunt for a learner is an absolute ape. I picked one up as my first bike ever and am loving it. I've been on a 5hr ride with it, it's manageable, fun in corners, has enough power to overtake, can ride on the highway and also overtake on the highway (just drop a gear) and is pretty much just a good all-rounder for a first bike. I tested ninja 300's a 400 and an mt-07. I picked the cbr500r for a reason and that's because it's probably the absolute best stepping stone to a higher capacity sportsbike. I want a gsx r750 as my next bike which is far more intense than the 500 but I feel like the cbr500r is like training wheels for a more aggressive sportsbike. The mt-07 had a shit load more grunt but it was so upright it didn't feel like what I wanted. The Ninja 400 was a bit quicker than the cbr500 but it's a hell of a lot lighter too which was a no go because I needed to be able to handle something a little heavier if I was moving to something more powerful. At the end of the day, it's a Honda and it's reliable, comfy, easy to maintain, fun to ride and easy to learn on, what more could you want?

Def a great starter bike, and it's what I started with. Didn't find it too heavy, but weight is this bikes weakness - too heavy for that 471cc PT. My biggest issue was that I would literally be through all the gears by 70km/hr and once at highway speed, there wasn't a much juice left. I also found it really uncomfortable after about 45 minutes. Good starter bike but very limited at the top end.

People must be joking when they say the 500R doesn't handle highways. My 500R killed it on highways, plenty of passing power, hell even with an extra passenger it has 0 problem going as fast as I need. I guess if me and my passenger were very heavy set perhaps not the case (no offense to anyone, just not sure what else could make people say that)? But I digress, even my 300R has no problem on the highway, albeit with a bit more buzzing (solved with earplugs). Highly, highly recommend the 500R to everyone from beginners and experienced riders alike, it's got plenty of low and high end power without being overkill so you can easily maneuver in traffic and on highways as needed, all while remaining very affordable on market price and insurance premiums, not requiring a painful riding position, and getting great gas mileage. Only downside is it's so beautiful and common that your theft risk is higher - my lovely 500R just got stolen from me yesterday as a result. But I guess that's every bike, really...

The un-educated will think it is a 600 but I think the main selling point apart from mini-'Blade looks is it's 80mpg, 300mile range. When I travel long distances I don't sit at Banzai speeds all the time, 85 is a comfortable cruising speed and a CBR500R can do it all day long.

When your cruising in the 70 to 90mph speed range, what's the tank range and fuel consumption like in real world highway conditions ? Does it really get 80mpg and 300 miles from a tank ?

I average 60-65mpg and I am not nice to my cbr500. The best I got babying the crap out of it was 72mpg. The worst I've got is Going 100-110 constantly for about 20 miles and I averaged 48 mpg. These are real world numbers on my 2022 from a rider who is 6-1 and 250lbs with all my gear on.

It's not middle weight bike, it's top end beginner bike for sure but has nothing compared to mid weight bikes. Good first bike for sure, nothing like good second. I think if u want more power and you can pull your bike up to 100%, your next bike can easily have 50% more hp, and i mean to start from 650. 650 is the way to start if you ridden even with 125cc before! If never ride any 2wheel thing, i think that's the point to buy something like 300-500cc under 50hp bike.

Best advice: if you're too scared don't ride on the street. Accept that riding a motorcycle comes with added risk. Second: learn proper ways to mitigate the risk. Training, practicing, lessons, coaches, etc...

you genuinely do not need more than 50hp... people who like the 100hp bikes are people who are bored... if you enjoy riding, 500's/400's are enough and if you want to do interstate cruising or carrying a pillion across long distances a 650 is not the worst thing since they tend to have higher weight capacity, the 500's top out around 400lbs and the 650s tend to go nearly 500lbs.

When they say slow it’s taking into comparison metrics to other bikes in its class and price range, Honda makes quality but bad design choices or shoehorned the engine into a segment and this is what you get, for new riders it’s the bees knees but with time and other experiences with others in its class and a more clear picture of what they want from a bike they will know twins vibe too much at highway speeds, why do you see all touring class bikes have inline motor setups, after more than half an hour your hands go numb from singles and twins, this bike is overpriced for what it delivers compared to the competition, over weight and poor handling compared to the others, the newer models 2022 have upgraded brakes and suspension but then again it’s even more expensive, your into super bike and mt07 class you might as well go there
