where im from you have to be 24 years old to ride anything that is over 25kw power, and even for 125cc you have to go to driving school and pass national theory and driving exam at age 16 for it. and for 25kw power ones you need to be 20 year old, and have to retake the licence and go to instructor again for 16 hours, and have to pass national theory exam and driving exam 45 minutes in streets. But if you had the A2 licence which you get at 20, you dont have to do exams at 24, you just get your limitations on what you can ride. So they teach you all. Start is like first few hours is in closed training area, where you learn figures, before you go on to the streets with instructor driving behind you. But things hes saying here, like passing switch, does not exsist on my 21 year old CBR600F4iS. :D And bike doesnt move on its own so well in first gear, second and up, it moves well. And i use the killswitch, because i dont want to turn off ignition first, because if you have ignition still on with killswitch, radiator and cooling still keeps working on older bikes, so i helps my bike cool off a bit.

I agree. I was under the impression that you had to get on the throttle at the same time that you slowly released the clutch. I didn't know that the bike would not stall if I didn't give it some throttle. You can add the throttle after you have completely released the clutch lever if I am following this correctly and I think I am just by watching how the bike was moving and the instructor was not even using the throttle. This was the best tip for me. That and perfect practice makes for perfect learning. Before the internet came out I tried to ride a motorcycle with just being told how to do it by a buddy. That is not the ideal way to learn how to ride. Trust me on that. This KZbin thing has helped me learn so much. I'm an older guy and a lot of my learning has been by trial and error. KZbin has made it so the errors are much less than they used to be. Learning to ride a motorcycle at my age by trial and error without getting some good instruction first is not a good idea.

Well it depends sometimes I ride this 1970 old bike with like 2 ccs and it cant even idle😂 but if you want to get going you have to give it plenty of gas before you release the clutch. But most motorcycles should have enough power.

@@richardwestmoreland4796 You evidently took very seriously the recommendation to stay off the throttle while slowly releasing the clutch to get going, BUT did you take note of the almost-as-serious recommendation regarding the throttle when you want to slow down? @socialriderb said if you completely release the throttle while it's in gear, it could be jerky. I don't think anybody wants a jerky motorbike or to be near one. If I were to ever get on a motorcycle, I would have to really study those details because it's a bit different from a bicycle. On a motorcycle, both brakes are on the right side while the left side is all that dangerous stuff. I still have no idea how he uses that lever down there to get into 2nd, 3rd, etc. Can he tell he's in neutral WITHOUT looking at his dashboard???? Anyway, if you head down this path, I wish you the best, and hope you study the heck out of these details and practice them under differing safe conditions so that your rides produce beautiful memories instead of nightmares. Two points I struggled with the most while learning to ride are: 1) Learning to brake. Once you start throttling the bike can go out of hands pretty easily for a beginner. At that point, one panics and their feet are no longer on rests, rather they're in the air, and the brake can't be applied anymore and they end up crashing. I believe braking should be taught before throttling. 2) Turning vs leaning: Bike is not like a car where you only have to steer. It's like a plane where you also have to lean. Shifting the weight is also very important. On my first try, I steered the bike but didn't lean and I ended up crashing since it didn't turn properly.

LOVE THIS! 1st ride of my life today- 5'3", 50 year old female on a 2023 kawasaki Z400. Hubby's been riding since he was 4 & dad owned a bike shop. In the first 5 minutes, you showed me 5 things I had zero knowledge about. I dropped my bike twice in 15 minutes (in 1st gear, school parking lot)- I'm good, only bent the clutch lever, paints still 100%. Hubby had me ride into 4 lane traffic before I even really grasped how to shift, brake, or drop the bike. 1st time ever riders...plan on going down - please do it in first gear wearing a helmet - husband is an awesome rider, absolutely crap instructor, with a temper to boot. Watching honest, in depth videos like this can literally save someone's life. No such thing as learning too slow. THANK YOU 4 this!!

Not even 5% of what a BRC teaches a rider. 70% of the course is talking about how to mentally ride and scan, find outs in situations, etc. 30% is how to ride. 25% of how to ride is how to emergency brake, how to turn corners, countersteering, uturns, etc. This was 5%. If you bake your friend don't make him think this substitutes for a safety course. Riding is a life long hobby, make your friend take a 2 day BRC so that life long hobby is a long life not a short one

First off, great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it. One very important thing that I learned during my MSF course (the hard way) is that not all bikes have quite enough power to "coast" without any throttle input while the clutch is fully released. In those cases, fully releasing the clutch lever will stall the bike, no matter how slowly you do it. Ultimately this is all dependent upon the bike itself.

JN2 Media I'm glad you brought this point up. I was thinking exactly the same thing. Not all bikes are the same and my understanding prior to seeing this video was that you had to slowly add some throttle as you released the clutch lever or the bike might stall or at least have a jerking motion. I'm sure that everyone's goal is to have smooth starts and acceleration and I was thinking if the idle on the bike isn't properly adjusted or it's a cold morning and the engine hasn't come up to a good operating temperature you might not have smooth starts if you don't open the throttle a bit.

Good luck with getting your licence. I've been riding for over 50 years, and passed my test when it was a lot easier than it is now. My best advice for survival is never assume that other drivers have seen you, and always give yourself an escape strategy. I still find it amazing that, in the US, it seems you can ride a comparatively large capacity bike on the road with little or no experience or formal training.

Road - click lever 1 time down for 1st gear, then each click up takes you +1 gear to 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. Race - click lever 1 time UP for 1st year, then each click DOWN takes you +1 gear to 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. When racing you need to be break into a corner, lean over, then power through the rest of the corner, going up through the gears while still leaning over, and accelerate onto the straight. Because you're leaned over your left foot is very close to the track. If you had to put your foot under the lever it would get caught between the lever and the track. So you keep your foot on top and you just tap down to go up through the gears. It keeps your foot away from the track while accelerating.

@@socalriderb Like PeteZa I really liked the part where you explained the use of the clutch in conjunction with the throttle. Before seeing your video I thought that the bike would stall if you didn't open the throttle a bit as you slowly released the clutch lever. Correct me if I'm wrong but the bike won't stall even if you don't get on the throttle at the same time as you slowly release the clutch lever. Are all motorcycles like that? I was thinking that if the bike's idle wasn't properly adjusted when you release the clutch lever the bike could stall. Especially when it is cold out and the engine hasn't warmed up a bit first. Could you expound upon what is the best practice when you are starting the bike before the engine has come up in temperature on say a cold morning?

Good video! One thing I think beginners will still have a question about is what to do with theire feet. After you slowly start, how quick should you put them on the foot pegs? Or should you leave them out in the air for safety while going this slow? Answer: you should put both feet up as quickly as possible and practise controlling speed and balance with the clutch.

When you first start off, you can keep your feet hovering a little bit above the ground until the bike starts to roll on its own. You can even waddle with the bike while releasing the clutch to get a feel of how the bike balances. When you get comfortable, you can lift your feet up. But the better you get, the quicker you'll put your feet up.

Great intro video! Came here to learn how to instruct my friends or newby's how to ride mine. I do want to add two important things that I always tell them: 1. It's no problem falling over, but just step wide aside. That way the bike won't fall on your foot or leg. 2. When stopping, make sure you're always going straight. Brake when cornering (even going 3mph) and you're gonna tip over and drop the bike to the floor.

I'm a fifteen year old girl in the UK so am often mocked for my interest in bikes, cars and formula 1 so it was nice to hear you mention girl riders aswell. I brought a peurgot speed fight 50cc awhile back now and have been rebuilding that but recently my dad has been teaching me to use gear bikes and even let me roll a couple meters on his YAMAHA R6 (which was absolutely terrifying and exhilarating at the same time) and had to tiptoe it back. Next weekend hes planning on getting our aprilla RS on the road and MOTed so i can learn on that (so i can actually flat foot it XD) and maybe start doing some slow drills. Over this week though i need to keep on learning how to properly use the bike and this video was amazing. Good basic nomenclature of the motorcycle. I was a former motorcycle officer and the the 2 week training was the toughest training course I ever experienced. Apex turning, clutch throttle control, braking excercises, slow ride training, high speed maneuvering, emergency braking. Lock to lock turning maneuvers, defensive riding and proper road positioning. So much to learn if you've never ridden. For experienced and well trained as I was, I was collided into on several occasions. Luckily I wasn't seriously hurt. Take a certified riding course, it may save your life.

I took a beginners riding course over a 2 day period. As God is my witness I had never sat a on a motorcycle before…never on the back, riding, not even a fort bike. The friction zone is so incredibly important. Remember that when you take a course the motorcycles and the bikes are provided…They aren’t powerful (maybe 10hp) and they are beat to hell for the most park. Everything on them is gonna be kind of work out. My didn’t have any rear view mirrors, the clutch was bad, the brakes weren’t great, and the shifter was about as broken as it could be. This video explains the course (minus the maneuvers and exam etc) very well. I’m 280lbs and was practicing on a Honda Grom. If I can learn this than ANYONE that is teachable and coachable will learn this even quicker than I did. I wish I saw this video before I took the course. I’m great full to see it afterwards because it answers a lot of question as well. The friction zone explanation is fantastic!!!

This is a very good lesson and thank you for generously sharing it for people like me who are not yet used to a gear based bike. My suggestion would be to include shots on how to change the gear with your feet and also the rear break. Since the front brake is the most powerful one, I usually would tap the rear brake to light up the brake light. This is way less risky than tapping the front brake on bikes with powerful brakes, regardless of weather conditions. Super good video for beginners man, you explained everything in a clear manner.

Tip : if you have non abs or cheap bikes don't use front brakes. Use only rear brakes. Use front only if you are below 10 km/h. If use front brakes on higher speeds, front tire will skid and you will fall down.

Your front brake is in front of 95% of the weight of the bike and can slow it down easier because the mass of the bike is pushing right into it, while the back brake is behind all the mass, so the full weight of the bike is just pulling that back tire along for the ride no matter how tightly it brakes
